Arti Gras performers needed - In conjunction with this September's Artomatic 419 event: "On Saturday, September 2nd from 12:00pm to 6:00pm, in association with The Uptown Association and the Adams Amble, there will be a huge block party spanning several blocks of Adams Street with bands, balloons, food, art, fun, games and a great time for all! Toledo does not have a “no holds barred” festival on a par with some of the inspired lunacy of other cities (Mardi Gras, Philly’s Mummers Parade, Pasadena’s Doo Dah Parade and San Francisco’s Bay-to-Breakers.) This is a chance to cut loose and have one last burst of summer as the season draws to a close. This is a real chance to 'let your freak flag fly'."
"But it will only happen if YOU get involved."
"We are looking for people (performers, actors, musicians, magicians, mimes contortionists, singers, artists, clowns, men and women who like to wear costumes, men who like to wear dressescarnival types – bearded ladies, Siamese twins, the infamous “snake girl”! Little People, Big People, stilt-walkers (men in heels will do too!), sword-swallowers, sword-eaters, people who want to get married, people who want to get divorced!."
"If you, or anyone you know, fits the bill and would be interested in participating, we’d ask that you contact Bill Quinlan bq@harvesttheatre.com ."

"freak flag" huh? Doesn't sound "family friendly"; I'll pass.

This sounds like it would be one EXTRAordinary event and a wonderful way to embrace diversity.
We (Toledo) want to attract more people, more business, and more excitement, and this could be just the first step. To demonstrate to all who are watching that Toledo is a welcoming spot for all persuasions.
I have no particular talent, but would love to attend and support such an eclectic event!

MrsPhoenix - a second note:
Here are a few grant resources that you may, or may not, be familiar with. It can't hurt to apply if your group meets the guidelines. Good luck!

Sounds awesome. We need something kooky and fun. Nothing to offer, other than showing up in a gorilla mask wearing a pink tu-tu, make a robot box for my Daughter beep beep beep. Or maybe we'll just stick with masks.
Until people start smoking crack in the doorways, I'd say it's family friendly. The Wonderbread factory tour is nice, but ho-hum.

"Doesn't sound "family friendly" ..."
That's okay because the Mud Hens play a lot of home games, and those are suppose to be "family friendly." So you have options.
And so what if one event on one day in one part of the city is not so-called "family friendly?"
And what in the hell does "family friendly" mean, anyway? Who gets to define that phrase? What's not "family friendly" about Toledo's plan for Arti Gras?

Good Lord jr! Sensitive much?
DoknowDocare, thank you for listing those resources. I will forward them to the appropriate staff member @ SETT.

MrsPhoenix, I see you didn't answer any of my questions like:
"And what in the hell does "family friendly" mean, anyway?"
"What's not "family friendly" about Toledo's plan for Arti Gras?"
You didn't explain why you attached a label to the event. Weak.
But then again, I don't expect any legitimate answers from you MrsPhoenix because you have a habit of dodging poignant questions, especially when it concerns SETT.

For crying out loud, jr, what is your problem? "Family friendly" to me may mean something different to others. When I saw the words "let your freak flag fly" that was a turn-off for me. BIG DEAL. My decision; my choice. I don't attempt to force my opinion down the throats of others.
And regarding SETT, guess what? It's called giving a DAMN. It happens when you live in a primarily Black neighborhood where many of the youth have either joined/participated in the program, seen the SETT youth at workshops/conferences/performances, and have brought what they've learned home to make a positive difference in their families and neighborhoods. This is what I have seen first-hand. These youth and the families that support them have made my neighborhood gang-free. So yes, I feel grateful.
If you still have those "poignant questions", feel free to call the SETT program. Their number is (419) 242-2255.

There wasn't a whole lot in the uptown area when I left Toledo in 1998. Had to leave Detroit due to stagnation and too much political "stuff" and I am soooooo glad to see that there IS something going on in my home town!! I will definitely be part of Arti Gras....even if it is only attendance. Congrats to all......

I guess I don't get why the term 'freak flag' would make one think of bad, unsavory, anti family things. I took it as simply do your own thing, leave prejudice and homophobia at home, come with a smile and hope to be surprised. Sounds like fun to me.

the word 'freak' makes me think of the 'freak' balls at Jed's. And this has made me very much hungry.
I don't know about jr - but it's been one HUGE crisis after another one here lately. And I'm tired, alternatively pissed off and sometimes feel like hanging it up. But then - I pick myself back up again :-)
Everybody's alive, getting along and almost making it financially. :-) The grass is green and the flowers are out and I just need some perspective.
And I know what that bead throwing business is :-)

Katie - get your perspective in order, chickie! LOL You're going to go to this thing with me and the other half. Will do you good to 'break out' of that Mom role for a couple hours. Besides, there are some serious cheeseburgers waiting for us at that special diner downtown. ;)

Katie, I know what you mean. My life started to go to hell first week of last december and kept up heading downwards ever since - one thing after another. Last winter, I felt the bottom falling out of my world, snowballing. But hanging in on this end, it does pass, as will your problems. Like my mom always said, "Whatever doesn't kill us, makes us stronger".

Problem? Narrow-minded people like you, MrsPhoenix. You dismiss something without even knowing much about it. And the topic was simply an announcement, looking for volunteers to participate. It didn't ask whether or not you would be attending. The world doesn't care that you won't go.
Believe me, I'll be looking more into SETT.

Great! They could use donations of both your time and money working with at-risk youth. Hopefully, you'll put BOTH where your mouth is.

Sorry, honey, that's not what I mean by "looking into it." I want to know how our tax dollars are spent. I want to know more than what's mentiond on the county's website about SETT:
"SETT offers a holistic approach to family life education rather than merely urging young people to (just say no) to premature sexual activity, drug and alcohol abuse and other destructive choices. Members help their peers explore a vast range of positive choices from activities and attitudes to adventures that invite a hearty and promising (YES) response."
If I find SETT is truly a legit org, then they'll get my money and maybe my time so you can get a website to inform the rest of us on what SETT is up to. Until then, I'll continue to donate my time and money elsewhere.

Family-friendly events are so overrated these days. It's time to start appealing for all people regardless of their cultural differences--so I am ready to fly my freak flag!

That's the problem is that everyone in the city thinks that things have to be "family oriented". Well guess what families have budgets and entertainment doesn't always fall in that budget.
Maybe we should exploit some money from non family sources.
Just for the record the last time I let my freak flag fly I ended up standing in front of a judge trying to explain why I was urinating on Tony Danza's star screaming "Who's the boss now B*tch!" ha ha just joking... but no one day I will!

Sounds like the 4th Street Fair up in Detroit from when I went to Wayne State. Have any of you ever been to that one or the Dally in the Ally the weekend after labor day.
"Welcome to Detroit's Fourth Street... Now go Home - if you can't stand anarchists, tattoos, libertarians, queers, honkeys, bikers, niggers, gays, kids, families, America, Canada, kikes, commies, trailer trash, hippies, punkers, piercings, Muslims, gen X, techno, rock and roll, pot, vamps, and humanity.
To the rest of you welcome to the annual
Positively 4th Street Fair!"

After your research is complete, SETT will more than welcome a donation of either your time or money or both. And a website is an excellent idea.

I've been saying this for YEARS!! There's a whole lot of people in this town with NO kids at home (my youngest is 28 and just bought her own house) who like to have fun, and have plenty of money to spend, but they're being ignored by the people who want to 'seem' PC.
What's wrong with being an 'entertainment center'? Everything that gets big crowds downtown is entertainment. I say run with it.
I'll be at the Arti-Gras!

Agreed nana and tm, some of us don't have a brood to haul around. We need a place too, you know.
Going to events around Toledo targeted to parents with 5-15 year olds just isn't much fun for someone my age.
This sounds promising. Thanks for the heads-up, jr!

I feel a need to respond to this thread as I was the one who wrote the blurb seeking performers and letting one's "freak flag fly". As one of the people responsible for organizing the performing arts aspect of this event, I'd like to clarify this a bit as this really is an event for everyone, though it is kind of divided to have two parts to the day Though, I'm sure that you folks looking for an "adult" outlet will have fun at both parts of the day! Starting at noon there will be a parade down Adams Street with lots of 'art' cars, Tarta busses, people in costumes, clowns, magicians; marching bands; I understand that Santa Claus will be making an appearance as well! He's vacationing in Toledo that week. Who knew??) We'll have face-painting for the kids and chalk art and food for all - including ice cream from Stone Cold Creamery -, live music (including one of the area's preeminent children's theatre companies performing Broadway Showtunes) at both ends of the party (including jazz and Dixieland) even a "Poet's Corner" But as we get into the late afternoon/evening hours it will probably be more fun for adults with a band starting later that has a "harder edge" to it. There will be live music at Pub St. George, Manhattan's and at The City Paper parking lot well into the night and early morning. There will be dancing in the streets! And we're expecting a really strong turn out of both families and single folks and adults who just want to have fun and a 'last hurrah' as summer comes to an end.
As for letting one's "freak flag fly". Anyone who is in tune to classic rock will recognize that line from David Crosby's anthemic "Almost Cut My Hair". Which I interpret to mean: cut loose, have fun and 'just be yourself'.
Remember the whole idea of the event is to celebrate the arts in Toledo! There are a tremendous amount of talented people here in Toledo and this is an opportunity to highlight some of that talent. That, and also spark interest amid a fundraising effort for the Adams Street Mural project. This is an incredible opportunity for people to come together to show that Toledo is not just a city about industry and business, but that we have a thriving and healthy arts scene! Please pass the word.
As for the beads. . .well, not even I can tell what the evening will hold in store. . .
:-)
btw, I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and I have no qualms about bringing them to the event whatsoever.
Please contact me directly if you have any comments or suggestions!
Thanks - bq1197@yahoo.com or info@harvesttheatre.com
(And those of you adults who are interested in the evening aspect - volunteer to make the daytime event strong and stay for the evening fun! The plan is to make this an annual event. A strong showing and a safe event by people from all over Toledo could really justify that this continues in 2007 and become a premiere event on a par with great street festivals across the US)
See ya Sept. 2nd!
