Lieberman going after 'Big Doughnut' - It's definitely a 2004 Toledo City Council issue after their Water-is-Wet resolution. Council forced their smoking ban on Toledo for public health reasons. It makes sense for Council to follow Lieberman's lead by attacking Big Doughnut. An addictive chemical is used in the glaze of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Alcohol, fast food, junk food, all of it needs controlled or banned by the government to improve our health, since we are too dumb to know any better. I think we all knew this would happen. I wonder how this will affect Joe's lead in Ohio?
From the story:
"Warning: Jelly doughnuts may be hazardous to your child's health. That's what Democratic presidential candidate Joe Lieberman is telling America's parents as he seeks a federal investigation into the marketing practices of junk food companies."
"[Joe] wants the Federal Trade Commission to determine whether there is a connection between junk food advertising and the rise in obesity among youngsters."
Here's where Joe earns the Master of the Obvious award:
"I like doughnuts. I like sweets. I like candy," Lieberman said Thursday. "I'm not saying if you eat a jelly doughnut or have a high-sugar bottle of soda, you're going to get sick, but if you have too many it's going to affect your health."
That last line should be engraved in stone. This is actually a campaign issue for Lieberman.
"As president, Lieberman would push for three interim moves while the FTC conducts its study:"
"_ Require junk food advertisements to include nutritional information that somehow issues a warning to parents, much like movie ads are accompanied by parental ratings."
First rule of government: Assume the citizenry is stupid.
Second rule of government: Pass legislation to protect the citizenry from themselves.

Comments ...
Mmmm, maybe Joe has been reading my comments on the subject.
"If you health-freaks are so concerned about the public's well-being, why don't you close down all fast food eateries in Toledo? Why don't you require all restaurants to make 80% of their menus offer vegetarian meals? Why don't you ban the sale of alcohol in public places? Why don't you remove the vending machines of soda pop and junk food from the schools?"
The other two points of Lieberman's campaign issue against crappy food:
"_ Ask Congress to require restaurant chains to include nutritional information on menus and mini-boards. There already is a bill pending in Congress to do this."
"_ Empower the Agriculture Department to set standards for food sold in schools, primarily vending machines. The USDA currently regulates lunch menus, but there are no limits on what companies can sell kids through vending machines."

Perhaps while people are looking to assign blame, they should look at the parents who obviously aren't monitoring what their children are eating. I remember having to ask for sweets when I was growing up.
