Franklin Park Unveils New Wing - From the Blade: "Dozens of shoppers, bargain hunters, and the just plain curious lined up at 5:30 a.m. yesterday outside Westfield Shoppingtown Franklin Park to be the first nonmall employees to venture inside the complex's new $117 million expansion wing.

'It was just absolutely amazing. We had people waiting with folding chairs. It was like people lining up for the first baseball game of the season,' said Kurt Pollex, the mall's marketing director. The stores opened at 9 a.m.

Thousands poured through the new 238,000-square-foot wing yesterday to shop its 27 retailers, including 17 stores new to the area."

From historymike: Well, it certainly is a nice looking place. I was a bit puzzled by the part about dozens of shoppers lining up at 5:30 AM to be the first non-mall visitors in the new wing.

The photo is kind of creepy - the shoppers looked like zombies in Dawn of the Dead, only looking to devour consumer goods instead of human flesh.

I had forgotten about the "new" mall yesterday, and got stuck in a mini-traffic jam last night about 9:30 on Sylvania. I saw this massive stream of cars pouring out at the new traffic light by the parking structure. It looks like our last best hope to deal with Christmas mall traffic - Sylvania - will no longer be an option.

It’s too bad The Blade couldn’t follow some of those shoppers around for a few years. The Blade could then publish a photo of the same people in bankruptcy court with the caption “Dawn of the Deadbeats”.

I haven't been there yet....as I don't like malls but according to two of my daughters who went on Sunday?

It's very nice....and I'm told there is a New Orleans style eating place.....tempting though Gumbo's is a favorite when I can't make it to the actual New Orleans craving moments.....

Last time I went over to Franklin Park some nitwit girl t-boned me! I haven't been there for a year or more, and don't really plan on making it part of my shopping experience anymore - what with those stupid Toledo drivers.

Even so, I'm glad they dropped the "Shoppingtown" moniker. Maybe that works in Australia, but it seemed goofy to me.

Of course, Franklin Park is the only place to shop in Toledo. Naturally, I don't mean that as a compliment. I mean, if you're unfortunately enough to be in Toledo, it's the only place you can shop unless you want to go to a Dollar Store.

Frankly, I've never understood Westfield's willingness to invest so much money in Toledo. Seems like throwing money down a rat hole to me.
