Local anti-war protesters arrested - This happened on Monday. "More than 100 protesters gathered at the mall and chanted opposition to military action against Iraq and some sat on the sidewalk and blocked the doors, triggering a standoff with police. It ended with the peaceful arrests of 24 people, some of whom had to be carried to police vehicles."
The protesters were organized by a group called the Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition and were led by Mike Ferner.
One moronic statement by a protester:
Jude Fackelman, 47, of Toledo protested the war but did not block a door. Instead, she showed pictures of her daughter, JoAnna Tucker, and son-in-law William Tucker, both National Guard reservists.
"I don’t believe my grandchildren should be deprived of their mother and father for oil, and that’s what I believe all of this is about," Mrs. Fackelman said. "My grandson just celebrated his fourth birthday, but his father wasn’t there because he’s at Fort Bragg."
Come on grams, try a different lame excuse than the worn-out "war for oil" crap, which is so illogical. As to her last statement about her grandson's birthday, the kid's father shouldn't have joined the military. These things happen. It's not like the U.S. has been void of military conflict for the past 30 years. Besides, the military offers its people a lot of benefits too, which don't get mentioned, such as money for schooling and buying a home, early retirement.
There was a good statement made by a person working at the recruitment office:
First Sgt. Brian Beedee, in charge of northwest Ohio recruiting for the Army, had to be escorted past protesters by Lieutenant Preston shortly before noon.
"We do our thing so they can do their thing, so that’s all right," Sergeant Beedee said. "It’s when they impede the doorway is when we have problems. You know, I didn’t see any of them protesting about killing civilians after 9/11."
