You jeep workers knew this guy? - Adrian

Boss accused of assault

Joseph Ray Garverick, a co-owner of The Legacy Golf Course in Ottawa Lake, was arraigned in Lenawee County District Court on a charge of sexually assaulting a female employee on Sept. 21.

Garverick, 47, of Ottawa Lake, was released on a $25,000 bond Tuesday pending a Feb. 24 preliminary examination on a third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. Defense attorney Gregory Worker of Onsted said no comments on the case are being made before testimony is heard at the hearing next week.

Michigan State Police at the Adrian post investigated allegations made by the golf course employee. Trooper Jill Brown said the woman asked to go for a ride in Garverick's Dodge Viper sports car that day. After driving her to Blissfield, she said, Garverick turned off U.S. 223 and onto back roads in Riga Township. Brown said the woman told her that her boss questioned her about her sexual activities then assaulted her in the car.

The third-degree charge carries a maximum 15-year prison term.

How is this man connected to Jeep?

I got an email a few days back that I need to respond to about this case. The writer found it odd that Michigan papers picked up on the story, but that Ohio media have (so far) ignored it.

Anyone know about this case or this person?

A JeepMaker comment from July 30, 2005:

"Remember Joe Garverick? I'm not sure, but he "may" have finally retired. That guy couldn't have worked a real job more than a year. IIRC he was hired around 1985. Of course now he's married into money and owns a golf course (which I'm sure our union reps have played for free more times than you can count. Somehow he was able to claim that he had a form of epilepsy and was unable to work around ANY machinery, production lines included of course. Yet I wonder how often he ran the big mowers at the golf course?"

The sexual assault allegations are not a big surprise to me. About six or seven years ago I dated a girl who took a bartending job at The Legacy. She had to quit due to the sexual harrassment by the owners' friends and probably the owner himself. I never got the full story about the owner(s), but I know that it was atleast expected that the female staff let the boys do their thing.

Unfortunately, she did not get very specific in her account to me. I guess she saw that glimmer of homicidal rage in my eyes as I imagined fat cat scumbags groping my girl. Garverick has no idea how close he came to getting his bones broken.

I asked my union steward today and he told me that they finally had to ask him to quit. The bastard is a freakin millionaire and Lord knows how long he was sucking up job bank money.

The guy is a true piece of shit. He had something like 85 seniority and I'm telling you, if he actually WORKED a couple of months it would be a miracle. He is the worst example of the union big boys taking care of their buddies.

What kills me is you employees are giving your union dues to people like this.

I take great joy in typing this: Take a look at Honda of America. They're doing a lot better than union workers.

They don't have the drama of having a union steward lie to their faces.

They don't have to "keep their mouths shut" or risk being put into an undesirable position.

There are NO union officials spending union money on themselves while you're sweating away on the assembly line.

I could go on and on about WHY the union is now outdated. But the bottom line is that unions suck the life out of hardworking employees while the fat pigs golf, boat and frollic about on company time.

Do the math yourself.

Brian the trouble with a comparason to honda of America is this. The company is not stupid, they know that if they don't treat their workers right the UAW is waiting in the wings to jump in.

In that way the Honda of Ameriica workers are actually reaping some of the benefit of being union members without having to actually join.

That being said the union has it's problems, mainly greedy lazy leadership.

Maria, he didn't specify who asked him to quit.
As for Garverick, I hope he gets nailed and then I hope his wife,(who's money he built the golf course with) divorces him and cleans him out.

Just amazing how these type of characters are allowed to control our union while the vast majority of workers are honest hard working decent people. Don't get me wrong I am in no way anti-union. A few years ago I would have agreed 100 percent with that statement...I cannot today...the UAW agreed with Two-Tier Wages (my opinion...CONCESSIONS show SOLIDARITY within the MEMBERSHIP unlike TWO-TIER WAGES) and as for us at Toledo Jeep...Supplier Park...our Jeeps built at one half wages ($12-14 per hour) by TPT'S and NEW HIRES...Retired Jeep Workers with full pension will also REAP hourly pay at $25+ per hour...SOOOOooooooooo...

...I am a thinking...Management is NOT as scared of UNIONS as possibly the WORKFORCE may be with DEALS as such and with BAD BEHAVIOR, LIES from UNION REPRESENTATIVES...whose more SCARED?

UnionWanted...We should be able TRUST and BELIEVE our Representatives...when elected they take an OATH OF OFFICE to SERVE US WITH TRUTH AND JUSTICE...

It really is disgusting, the crap they get away with, all of it reflects poorly on all of us.

It seems like whoever gets elected, turns corrupt. Part of the blame has to lie with the membership though. How many people do you know who treat elections like a popularity contest? Some of these morons vote for someone because they go drinking with them. Some people grow old, but don't grow up.

Explain to me why Chrysler IS the Local 12?

Look at some of the crap your union officials are up to. I honestly have yet to see anything productive come from Toledo's Unions in years. Unless you're a union rep, you can expect to "kill yourselves" until the next contract comes up, work without a contract then settle with less because the bargining unit is looking out for the union presence, not the worker.

Here's an article that appeared in last week's Wall Street Journal titled: "Automakers pay thousands of idled workers in Jobs Bank." Some excerpts:

"In his 34 years working for General Motors Corp., one of Jerry Mellon's toughest assignments came in January. He spent a week in what workers call the "rubber room." The room is a windowless old storage shed for engine parts. It is filled with long tables, Mellon said, and has space for about 400 employees. They must arrive at 6 a.m. each day and stay until 2:30 p.m., with 45 minutes off for lunch. A supervisor roams the aisles, signing people out when they want to use the restroom."

"This is the "Jobs Bank," a 20-year-old program under which nearly 15,000 autoworkers continue to get paid after their companies stop needing them. To earn wages and benefits that often top $100,000 a year, the workers must perform some company-approved activity. Many do volunteer jobs or go back to school. The rest must clock time in the rubber room or something like it."

"The Jobs Bank at GM and other U.S. auto companies, including Ford Motor Co., is likely to cost about $1.4 billion to $2 billion this year. The programs, which are up for renewal next year when union contracts expire, have become a symbol of why Detroit struggles even as Japanese automakers with big U.S. operations prosper."

"GM employees constitute slightly more than half of the 14,700 autoworkers in the Jobs Bank. In second place with 3,000 Jobs Bank workers is Delphi, the auto-parts maker that filed for bankruptcy-court protection in October. The Chrysler unit of DaimlerChrysler AG has 2,500, and Ford has 1,100. Executives expect the total to rise to more than 17,000 next year, as the Detroit companies prepare to shed more than 60,000 jobs."

"In Flint, Mellon also sees change on the horizon. "I understand the Jobs Bank needs to have an end to it," he said over a beer at lunch in Flint's Caboose Lounge. "I mean, they've paid me like $400,000 over six years to do nothing, to learn to deal blackjack. But buy me out. Retire me with something like $2,000 for every year I worked. I need that because you know they're going to keep cutting our health care and pensions. You are so vulnerable in retirement." "

I wonder if the blackjack dealer actually saved any of that money?

posted by jr at 10:12 A.M. EST on Thu Mar 09, 2006     #

So let me get this straight...

You get layed off so the company can reduce their inventory and labor cost at the same time.

Then you get stuck in the Rubber room where you continue to collect your pay for being non-productive.

I wonder if I can go to my boss and request to get paid for learning to deal Blackjack instead of being productive?

I don't see the logic. Is this something that is written into union contracts? Why lay-off employees at all if you are going to continue to pay 'em?

Then some have the nerve to speak of Corporate welfare?

Brian, Explain to me why Chrysler IS the Local 12? Sorry but I guess I'm missing what you're trying to ask. Explain?

Job bank was initially created as a way to soften the blow of jobs being lost to automation. I'm not a fan of it, it has "abuse me" written all over it. And it was. They pissed through millions like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately, it's tomorrow now.

KraZyKat says,"Why lay-off employees at all if you are going to continue to pay 'em"? Exactly, this is what most line workers complain about. We are continually subjected to over-build and job elimination, the work force averages 50 years old. We are continually told this process will never end. But we have all these workers in job bank that is controled by union personalities who seem to do as they see fit with the manpower. Think of the power one would have with seemly no accountability to the membership as to what, where and whom are placed. Just look at the golf course owner and the few stories touched on about him. There are many more but it would become redundant for me. I am interested in any others with stories because I'm sure of one thing... I've only scratched the surface.

EVENT AT THE LEGACY TO BENEFIT 4 CHARITIES
Four charities will benefit from the inaugural Legacy Celebrity Classic, sponsored by The Blade, on Aug. 10 at The Legacy golf course in Ottawa Lake, Mich.

Eighteen celebrities, provided by the Coulier Foundation, will team up with local partners in a five-person scrambles event. Foursomes will pay $2000 each to participate, and tournament officials said yesterday that half of the spots already are reserved.
The event will benefit St. Anthony Villa, the Aurora Housr, the Epilepsy Foundation and the Coulier Cancer Fund.

The Coulier Foundation is the charitable arm of actor Dave Coulier, a Detroit-area native who is probably best known for his role as Joey on the TV show Full House. The foundation annually stages a celebrity tournament in Detroit.

It's quite popular and we sell it out every year," Steve Mosshart of the Coulier Foundation said yersterday at a press conference at The Legacy. "We met joe Garverick and felt it would great to do something in this area."

Garverick, co-owner with Dan Bunge of The Legacy, said that course officials,"are so appreciative of the response we've gotten here from the golfing public that we wanted to find a way to give something back to the community. These are great charities, great causes and we hope this will be successful and continue to grow. Next year we'd love to be able to double the number of celerities."

Mosshart said he was not prepared to announce celebrity participation, but indicated that they would represent a blend of show business talent and pro athletes, past and present, from Detroit teams.

"I guarantee we'll have some good people," Mosshart said.

David Beihoff, vice president and general manager of The Blade, said the newspaper was pleased to sponsor the classic.

"The people at The Legacy have done an impressive job with this facility and there are wonderful charities involved," Beilhoff said.

Gallery tickets for the event are priced at $10 and are available at Food Town stores.

JeepMaker said...

"Job bank was initially created as a way to soften the blow of jobs being lost to automation"

Wouldn't it make more sense to take the monies invested in the Job Bank and invest it in the re-educating and training of union employees who lost their jobs to automation so that they could aquire jobs which were more technical in nature instead of paying a guy 400,000 in 5 years to do nothing?

The Job Bank sounds alot like Union Welfare to me. What type of work ethics are we shooting for. The continues cycle of Welfare (in either Government or Union) where you can sit on your butt and collect a paycheck for doing nothing or do we strive to master the ethics that were tought to me by my father..."There's no free ride in life son. Seems to be lot of scandles in the news involving Jeep people.
Jeep people writing editorials in the Blade and City Paper.
Jeep people talking on the internet, alot of talk on the line, most have no respect for any of the union representatives.

JeepMaker, I agree, we the membership do need to be held responsible, we elect them. In the same token, if they turn corrupt, break oathes of office, we should disbar them.

Job eliminations continue as does waste throughout the plant. No balance makes for low morale.

Jeep will pay for retraining, education in another career, I am going to take advantage of that program. Jeep also has the National Training Center for employees and family members; there will be NO job bank funds for us that may be laid off, not after all the mis use and abuse of the program has been exposed in its entirity.

Golf course sex case heading to trial

- A woman claims her boss fondled her in a sports car, telling her that ‘what happens in a Viper stays in a Viper.'

By Dennis Pelham

Daily Telegram Staff Writer

ADRIAN - A co-owner of The Legacy golf course in Ottawa Lake said Friday he wants a jury to decide if he or a female employee accusing him of a sexual assault are telling the truth.

Joseph Ray Garverick, 47, was sent on his way toward a credibility match before a jury after the victim in the case testified at a hearing Friday in Lenawee County District Court. Defense attorney David Goldstein did not oppose a prosecution motion to bind the case over to circuit court.

“The jury can make a determination as to credibility,” Goldstein stated.

Judge Natalia M. Koselka ruled the woman's testimony was sufficient evidence to warrant binding the third-degree criminal sexual conduct case over to circuit court. Garverick remains free on a $25,000 bond pending his May 10 arraignment.

Garverick denied the woman's allegations in a written statement.

“The complainant in this case has made similar false allegations against a local business person in the past,” he stated. “I am innocent of these charges. I intend to continue to vigorously defend myself against these charges and expect that I will be completely vindicated.”

The “similar” allegations Garverick referred to are in a petition for a personal protection order the woman filed five years ago in circuit court against a Blissfield-area business owner she had worked for. She claimed in the petition that man repeatedly touched her breasts. A protection order was denied at the initial stage and no further court action was taken.

The current sex assault charge was filed against Garverick in February after an investigation by Michigan State Police at the Adrian post. The woman went to the post on Sept. 23 and reported she was assaulted by her boss two days earlier.

The delay in reporting the alleged assault to police is one of several issues Goldstein questioned the woman about Friday. In attacking her credibility, Goldstein asked the woman if she thought Garverick had three hands to be able to turn and downshift his sports car while also forcibly fondling her.

The woman told the court she “froze” when Garverick began reaching at her while riding in his car.

“You were not resisting?” Goldstein asked.

“No, I was scared,” she said.

She also said she held a cellular telephone in her hand when she got in Garverick's Dodge Viper sports car that afternoon but made no effort to call for help.

“I didn't think about it at the time,” she said.

When questioned by assistant Lenawee County prosecutor Laura Schaedler, the woman said the encounter began with Garverick offering to give her a ride in what she said is her favorite sports car. She said they met about 12:30 p.m. at the McDonald's restaurant in Blissfield.

She said Garverick drove from the village and turned south on Riga Highway where he began making advances. He turned onto gravel Fike Road where he parked on the side of the road, walked to her side of the car and pulled her pants down.

He later drove her back to Blissfield, she said, telling her as she got out, “What happens in a Viper stays in a Viper.”

The woman said she talked to a co-worker about the incident the next day at the golf course who told her “to do what you think you need to do.”

Goldstein asked why, after being sexually assaulted by her boss, “you go to work the next day, knowing there is a good chance he was going to be there?”

She said she talked to a Lenawee County sheriff's deputy by telephone about noon that day and went to the state police post at about 4 p.m.
