Age of consent is 16 in Ohio, if she had not been his teacher she wouldn't have gotten anything from what I understand.
Rather stupid thing for both of them, she has to register as a sex offender for ten years, has lost her teaching license and he lost college sports scholarship opportunities among being teased by classmates and other schools. Then, given there wasn't paternity testing done, he could very well be the father of her baby as well.
While I openly admit I married a younger man, I'll never understand the attraction of an older woman and a high schooler or an older man and a high schooler for that matter. I have personal family experience with a similar situation but at least that family member waited until the guy was legal, still thought it was pretty messed up but at least he had graduated from high school.

Right when I grad'd college, I went and got a job in the 'real world', while my two roomies went on to get their masters' degrees.
In doing so each of them taught sections of 100 level courses. BOTH of those morons ended up messing around with students in their own classes. Now these were all adults (chronologically speaking), but why gamble??
Hell, all they'd have to do was mess around with chicks in each OTHER's classes and all would be above board!
When I chastized them, they just said, "Its cool, she wont say anything..." What morons - and they'll admit today that it was stupid. Its not the girl you're with that'll nail you, its the one who had sporadic attendance, never did the homework and deservedly flunked the class that'll turn ya in, just for spite!!
Do you think it was that exact fear of getting caught that was part of the turn on?

What, you flunk math or something? 16 goes into 30 more times than 35 goes into 16. It's just that we all looked better at 16.
I didn't know about the age of consent in Ohio either. I assumed it was 18. Given that the age of consent is 16, she shouldn't have been charged or convicted of anything. The school could have fired her for conduct unbecomming a teacher or some such thing, but sex abuse? Real wrong. That's one law that should be thrown out so hard it leaves welts on the morons who wrote it.

This was done to protect students and to disencourage teachers from having any type of sexual contact with their students. It's also part of the reason why she only got 90 days.
If she would have been his neighbor and not his teacher? Would have been the talk of the town but not much more.

That is the point. The law says that when the adult is in a position of trust and authority, there is no age of consent. Age of consent is not significant in this matter given that she was his teacher.

Also, I think that if this were a male teacher she would be doing more time too. In my opinion, the sentencing was biased in her favor because she is a woman.

And a new mother. She has the sympathy factor. If it had been a male teacher - they'd have lowered the boom on the guy
My boys....I don't really know what I would have done if a teacher had treated them in this way. At 17 even - I think it would have tipped me over the edge.
This kid says his life is really hard - recruiters stopped calling, harassment in his neighborhood and at school.

My guess is a lot of high school guys (not all by any means) would be flattered at the attention of a cute young teacher, of course they'd be turned on. Sounds like she was looking for an outside interest as well. A lot of these kids would not turn away the possiblity of getting laid, especially with a hot, slightly older woman (she did not look like Blanche on The Golden Girls). The kid's got nothing to lose really, not in his mind, at the time of course. As for college profs, happens all the time. Madjack has it right. These young college girls look HOT to them, they've been out of the college circuit for a while, dating women their own ages (who most likely are more mature, more concerned about stability, futures, etc.), and they see these hot young girls all day. Not the thrill of maybe getting caught, at all I don't think. Just the thrill of doing a young chick, one more time. And the bragging rights perhaps. A lot of guys that age are starting to worry about getting older too. My 23 yr old daughter is dating a really nice guy, 38. It bothered me a lot for awhile, still does on some levels. He treats her better than guys her own age do/did. He's a solid guy. But he won't date women closer to his own age, because women in their 30's and beyond are more interested in how much money does he make, getting married, having kids, etc. He knows my daughter never wants any of that, doesn't care, pays her own way, just likes his company a lot, they have a lot of fun. But I can see that mid-life thing kicking in with him - a time will come where he's going to maybe get annoyed that she acts 23, and isn't thinking about her retirement. At any rate, this teacher sounds like she got a little bored. I feel sorry for her husband, kids. If her husband stands by her through this, he's an idiot.

I think you guys are right. About the thrill of the 'older' (fill in the blank, high school/college prof).
I don't have a problem with age differences in spouses. I've had a few myself. Let's see the first one was my high school sweetie. And that lasted about as long as a second in New York City. 2nd one was 10 years older, 3rd one....I'm going to quit typing now, this can only get worse...

I also just read about a teacher who had an "affair" with one of his students in Pa and she was 17. Now he is facing serious charges.I don't excuse his actions, but 17? Oh that's right. In less than a year this "kid" could have decided on her own to sleep with him, but under that "magic" age, it is his fault. If we as a society are so concerned with kids doing "adult" things, let's start with drinking and smoking. I see kids smoking and drinking all the time and nothing is done about it. I see the numerous "we card" signs in the local convenience stores so how are these kids getting smokes and beer? As a society, we almost accept the smoking and drinking thing, but if these same kids are found to be having an affair with an elder, it's a top news story. Who is supposed to enforce this 18 to smoke law? Do you call 9-1-1 and report an underage smoker? When was the last time, if ever, you saw or heard of the police doing something about it? Today I see Jr High Girls dressing and wearing makeup like they belong in a hip hop video. Are their parents watching? While it is a true tragedy if these "kids" are preyed on and sought out by an adult, I tend to believe that these "kids" are the ones who aren't without some degree of fault. In other words, the ones who are pushing the limits of adult behavior. I hope I am wrong, but it makes you wonder.

It really does make you wonder Tommy. When I see those kids, especially the hip hop high schoolers as you aptly put it - I wonder if they don't lack self-esteem. They have to seek approval from others bc they don't get it at home.
And of course the easiest way for a young woman to get approval is sexually. (short lived usually, but it's a 100 percenter for the short term!)
I wish these kids felt better about themselves. Wish they knew what value they have and how bright their futures can be, wish they knew the good things. And that everyone has at least one special gift or talent.
Sigh - I worry. God doesn't make junk - but sometimes I think alot of kids think they are junk.

My god. Was she hot? Hell there were a few teachers in my high school I would have jumped on in a second.
There is an enormous difference between boys and girls at that age. For a 17 year old boy this experience is a gift. For that reason we should leave the poor teacher alone. She lost her job that's good enough.

She got caught and now she has to pay. There has been "rumors" or secret affairs in all schools in between teachers/administrators and students for years and years and years. The media has to stop overdoing this story because there is nothing "news" about this to begin with.

I agree holytoledo. My old neighbor told me his brother was 'doing it' with a high school teacher. That's got to be sixty years ago - I don't think the story is new.
I thought 90 days was a gender biased decision actually...

When I was in High school (69' and before), there were a couple of teachers who were always coming onto female students, one was my best friend. Also a dad of a family we baby sat their kids for (we were kids, never occured to us to say anything, we just scrammed out of there). This stuff has been going on since time began.

You do know if this was a male they'd be screaming bloody murder. I am confident there's a real double standard here. And it's not supposed to be..

I thought that some of you might be interested in this post from a blogger about this mess in Ayersville. I agree with the blogger.
