New version of Toledo Talk

Bass Pro - A reality today! - This is the day a lot of people, especially fishing fans, have been waiting
for. The head of Bass Pro Shops will be in Bowling Green on Tuesday to
accept Wood County's offer of tax incentives, and talk about a plan to
build a new Bass Pro Shop in Rossford.
from an E-News 11 [enews11@wnmail.wtol.com] news alert...

One thing I'd heard about Bass Pro is that when they move in to a community, they know that their business will attract a number of smaller businesses that will want to set up shop in close proximity to Bass Pro, to pull off BP's draw. What BP likes to do when they can is buy up the property around where they are putting their store, so they can sell it to these other businesses - thus BP can decide who their neighbors are.

Thoughts? Seems like good business to me. I know there'll be a bunch of folks who think otherwise, but I have to look at the Lowes that went in on Alexis Rd. The strip has a Lowes on one end, a Pharm on the other, and between them - a dollar store, a nail salon, a cash for checks joint... All stores that generally arrive on the downswing of a shopping center. I think Bass Pro's policy is just good business sense.

My brother must be in heaven today. We're going to have to look into a 12 step program for him just to get him away from the store :Þ

a dollar store, a nail salon, a cash for checks joint

Seems like those are mandatory in every strip center now...

We've got a Pass Pro here in Charlotte where I'm living. It's got everything, everything, for the outdoor enthusiast. The prices are great. It's going to suck the life out of every mom and pop fishing/hunting/camping store within 75 miles, and that's what made me laugh at Toledo's attempt to attract it to the riverfront.

Just think of Bass Pro as the WalMart of sporting goods dealers.

We all know where the politicians and many of Toledo's good citizens stand regarding WalMart.

For the sake of arguement, could you name me off a couple mom and pop camping stores around the area?

I had the same question, billy. The only one I can think of is Maumee Tackle, but the store has thus far survived the invasion of Cabela's and Gander Mountain, and I believe it has a loyal customer base. Maumee Tackle is the go-to place during the spring walleye run.

I also like to shop at Jann's Netcraft, which is located off Salisbury Rd. Jann's is mainly a mail order business, but it also has a tackle store for us locals. My latest custom built fishing rod was assembled by Jann's. It's a good place.

I started birdwatching in the fall of 1999, and Cabela's opened in the fall of 2000. The outdoor clothing that allows me to birdwatch comfortably in the cold, the rain, the snow, the wind, and the heat was mostly purchased at Cabela's.

I do my bird watching at the Westfield mall while sipping on a latte. That way I don't have to have all that foul weather gear.LOL!

Also there is Cleland's. What the smaller stores don't offer in lower prices they make up for in area/wildlife expertise. Especially at Cleland's.

Most of the birds seen around Westfield are of the third finger variety.
