"Documents show the mayor had plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical work done to install a tile bathroom in his mayor's office suite. Spending $9,996, $4 short of the magical $10,000 mark."
Mike Sullivan, the building manager at Government Center, said, "Originally it was one document but we had to rebid it to separate into two different ones so that we didn't exceed $10,000."
Carty said, "I actually do not know how bills are paid by the city of Toledo."

It would be almost worth it to see her, provided that I could ask how her arm had healed up.

I think that was Carty's first wife. The way I heard it, she was taken to the hospital and treated, then Carty cut a deal with her and she refused to press charges.

What does this issue of Carty and his former wife has anything to do with this topic?

Will they have diagrams of any and all planned bikepaths on display?

{laughs} HHT, on a clear day, from the top of any tall building in downtown Toledo, you can wholly see one of the most ignorant bodies politic on the face of the planet. THAT is what Carty's (former?) wife has to do with this topic. Other than a few other selections (like for Detroit and Washington DC), Toledo has one of the worst idiot mayors in American history. The voters put him there after a clear 2-term demonstration of his idiocy. So who's the greater fool; the fool, or the fools who re-elected him?

So who's the greater fool; the fool, or the fools who re-elected him? Let's be fair now. Toledo residents really haven't had much of a choice in the past 15 years when it comes to mayoral elections. Even in primary elections.
Either that or Opal Covey really did curse us.

Toledo's great flaw is that a true fiscal conservative doesn't run for public office. For some reason, the Capitalists around here all seem to be too busy or uncaring to run for office to fix the terrible government. Rick Grafing ran for Mayor, and I liked that idea so much that I wrote him in, in the last election. Where are all the businessmen who allegedly have the education and wealth to conduct a successful campaign and then successfully limit the tax-and-spend practices of this city government?

as a successful businessman, would you put up with all the shit they'd have to if any of the policies they'd want to enforce didnt agree with the vision of John Robinson Block...

It's that a majority of people here on TT have a deep hatred of Carty.
Because of this they get a little rabid.
It's a little like the GOP witch-hunt against Clinton.
I've learned that TT is a place where the (largely) unrepresented minority comes to bitch about the will of the majority/plurality.
Some days I think that every Republican in Toledo is on here. All 8 of them.

"... the will of the majority/plurality."
And what has this "will" brought Toledo/Lucas County? Time to bring out those classic stats once again.
1. "Toledo's home county, Lucas, is the only one of Ohio's major urban counties to lose private-sector professional, scientific, and technical services jobs over the latest five-year period."
2. "Fifth from the bottom. That's how Toledo ranked in the latest national study of job growth among the 200 major metropolitan areas. The No. 196 ranking was worse than the previous report more than a year ago by the Milken Institute, a California think tank."
3. "Toledo shrinks 13th-fastest of U.S. cities, census says; 1.1% population drop in '05 among worst in Ohio."
4. "They’re young, single, college-educated, and coveted by leaders across the country for helping revitalize regions - and they’re leaving the Toledo area in droves. The figures, released this week, rank metro Toledo - which is Lucas, Wood, and Fulton counties - as 207th out of 276 metro areas across the country. That’s worse than every major metro area in Ohio, including Youngstown, and worse than smaller metro areas in Ohio except for Steubenville."
shaneh, why don't you relax by taking a walk on the new east side bike path.

Southwyck? Still a ghetto
Steam Plant? I work right next to it - nuttin.
Westgate? Is moving along DESPITE carty's trying to torpedo Costco.
Marina District? We voted to proceed on 9-11-2001. Wouldnt you expect a bit more to be done? Sure you can blame Jack Ford, but Carty's been here a year....
And by the way, genius - that post about Carty's wife was put out here by a liberal.

And by the way, I'm one of the "young, single, college-educated" people that they're talking about and while you certainly meant that tounge-in-cheek, I think I'll really enjoy the East Toledo bike path.
GuestZero got it right when he snidely said (i'm para-phrasing) that "bike paths are for yuppies."
That's probably true. It is in my case. But why is that a problem? Aren't we all bitching about "yuppies" leaving toledo? You do realize that's what they mean when they say 'brain drain'?
posted by shaneh at 03:10 P.M. EST on Thu Dec 21, 2006 #
Actually, shaneh, I believe it's primarily the Blade and the politicians who complain about 'brain drain.'
And in case you haven't noticed, many of the people who complain here about Carty are NOT Republicans...to be quite honest, I think that it has less to do with party affiliation and more to do with Carty and his nature.
You either love him or hate him - there's usually no inbetween. Me? I happen to like him personally, but disagree with many of his decisions. But just because I dislike some of the decisions he makes doesn't mean that I can't appreciate when - or if - he does something good.
As for the topic of the post, I think that it's nice that Amy Finkbeiner decided to host an event on the 22nd floor. Most Toledoans have probably not been up there - and it is a pretty neat view.

My prior points about yuppies is that they are necessarily a minority in the population and as such, all of society's development efforts should not be re-aligned to their needs. THAT is the problem. With many thousands of Toledoans in deep economic trouble from the flight of capital and jobs from the area, the last thing we need is to build another set of condos or bike paths for a monied minority -- the yuppies. Necessities must be covered before luxuries are indulged in. Economics 101, folks!
The society's "brains" should be smart enough to find their niches. The rich tend to do this just fine. What is the excuse, then, for these so-called smart folk?
posted by GuestZero at 03:54 A.M. EST on Fri Dec 22, 2006 #
And I would think yuppies could afford a home gym setup or at least a health club membership, which means they wouldn't care about bike paths in Toledo at this time of the year.
Besides, wasn't it established in another thread that all the yuppies in the area live in Perrysburg? How many bike paths does P-burg have?

Here we go again.

Shaneh I am a Lucas County Republican but I really don't get on here to bitch about Carty. I really don't mind him. I laugh at the Dem's I know who vote for him and then b*tch about him. I make jokes at his expense but I do realize at least in his first administration he did do things. This one not so much.
I laugh how people like you will pat each other on the back after each local election and yet you'll notice that the city rarely progresses and when it does it's an an exceptionally low pace. You picket Wal-mart for starting non-union jobs when the city sees over 2000 flee in just a matter of months. You allow places like Portside and Erie St. Market to charge a ton of money for business to start there and then wonder why no one comes to pay $10 for $2 worth of crap. How a mall becomes a haven for crime and the only solution the city comes up with after 5 years of debate is renovate and do exactly what the suburb, with less crime, did while not addressing crime. How gangs loot and riot and the city rehires the police chief because the mayor doubts there is a gang problem. How we'll have the highest hotel taxes in the country and wonder "Why don't people come here?"
Now I'm not saying to vote Republican. Actually there is only a small handful in the city worth the money they pay for their campaign signs, but at least if the wheel is flat change the tire. Don't fill it full of air and drive on it again.

Hey! Please DO, if the Republican candidates are meritorious. Ludeman was rather pathetic as a mayoral candidate, but we can't let the lacksadaisical Mr. 'Ludes Man determine the course of fiscal conservatism in Toledo.

GZ I don't think there's a Republican who wants the job anymore. I don't even think Rob really wanted it. Most of them have enough fun watching the crazies run during the primaries and then reading the A Team VS B Team articles in the Block news.
