UT students upset over housing law - And for good reason. College tuition and enrollment keep rising, so a way to save cash and space would be to share a residence. This law seems like another example of Toledo's intolerance towards the Creative Class. Was the Byrne Hill Estates issue a factor here? "Toledo zoning law forbids more than three unrelated people who are not considered a "functional family" from living together in a single-family home or a unit of a duplex unless they have a special-use permit. [Guy Beeman, student government president] said the law could affect thousands of students and should be repealed or amended so more students, perhaps five, could live together. A better alternative, he said, would be increased enforcement of the laws targeting poor behavior."

Ridiculous Housing Laws in the City of Toledo. I am currently a 18 year old at Anthony Wayne High School. I am a mature young adult, and planning on attending the University of Toledo next year. Four of my friends an myself had planned on living in a house together by at least our sophomore year, and now that is impossible due to the absurd law restricting more than three people of non blood relation from living together. Due to the excessive amount of money I would have to pay just to live with three people near the University, I will have to go to Owens. The Universtiy will lose much money not to mention student enrollment. Do people really think that by living near a University and college atmosphere, they won't be subject to that type of lifestyle. If they don't like it, move!!! It's their choice! This law is absurd, and completely unfounded.

The law is unconstitutional. As a landlord, one is not able legally to ask such questions as "are you married?" "Are you cousins?" etc.
I think that race is a factor here as well. I am sure that if the houses were being used for Section 8 (Welfare) housing, none of the neighbors would complain.

"Mayor refuses to meet or discuss compromises with Student Government leaders regarding zoning law."
Wow. It's great to have such an accomodating and accessible mayor who rams legislation up shady lane, and then runs and hides from questions. Ford won't explain his actions. The word 'coward' comes to mind.
"A number of student residents have been told they must move from their homes because they are in violation of this ordinance. This prompted student leaders to request a meeting with Mayor Ford to discuss this issue further and present over 1,200 letters from students at The University of Toledo opposing the ordinance; however, the Mayor refuses to meet with the University of Toledo student leaders."
" “Students are in protest of the law because they feel that it targets students as a group,” says Cain Myers Student Government vice-president. “The city is unfairly targeting all students when the real problem is the trash, parking, and noise concerns. The number of students is the not the problem, but the actions of a few of them are." "
"Student leaders will also continue to reach out to members of City Council to garner support for this issue."
Good luck. I get the feeling that Toledo City Council members don't think for themselves. Council simply takes orders from Ford.

Has anyone thought to talk with Councilwoman Grachek? As a former VP of UT student government, she may be sympathetic to your concerns.
