Sex offenders living near schools - "In a shocking report, the Toledo Blade revealed Sunday that about one in four registered sex offenders in Lucas County live closer to a school than allowed by state law. According to the newspaper analysis, 147 of 611 registered sex offenders in the county listed addresses within 1,000 feet of a school property. One of every three schools has a sex offender illegally living too close."

Great. The new scarlet letter: sex offender. So now the state has decided to permanently deny them property near a school. Even property owned before the offense? What about the fact that TPS is building all new schools? Will that bump some more into this category?
Also, there are a wide array of sex offenses. Are these pedophiles? Womanizers? People caught streaking? Or is it simply someone guilty of public urination? (Yes, that IS a crime that can get you the sex offender label in Ohio.
...So much for the set sentence in crime and punishment (Do the crime, do the time). Now getting relief from an about-to-burst bladder behind some bushes can force you out of your own hard-earned property.... and we call that justice?!?

Check to see what sex offenders, if any, are living near you. The state's searchable database lists detailed info about the offender, including the type of crime and sometimes the offender's picture. A quick check shows 12 sex offenders living in Northwood, like this dude. Simple, detailed search. Public info.

The legal limit, being a thousand feet equals just about 2 tenths of a mile. I would have to wonder how many places one can live in Toledo and not be within two tenths of a mile of a school just because Toledo has so many schools in it already. That sex offender label does get applied to a lot of people who don’t deserve it too. An 18-year-old guy who dates a 15 and ½ year old can be stuck with the sex offender label for the rest of his life if the parents of the 15 and ½ year old decide to press the issue. The sex offender label wouldn’t even be necessary if the system would just do its job. It is a well-known fact that people attracted to seven year olds offend again and again, the solution to that problem being just lock that person away forever.

I went ahead and cranked out a map of the schools in Lucas county with a 1000' zone marked around them . It seems that the center city areas especially are blanketed by schools. Since these are usually the poorer areas of town, it is no small wonder that ex-con sex offenders would be living here since I doubt few of them are wealthy...

So it's possible this is an overblown story that is not unique to Toledo.
