Delivering the paper can be dangerous - The concealed carry folks have a solution. "Just months after a Toledo Blade news carrier was raped while doing her paper route, WTOL.com is reporting that an elderly Toledo Blade paper carrier was savagely beaten in an attempted robbery last Friday morning. The Blade didn't cover the news of Phyllis' victimization on its website, just as it did not cover news that two of the paper's night employees were robbed in the Blade parking lot just a few months ago, within view of the "No Guns" signs on all of the doors of the Blade building in downtown Toledo."

"But in a city where gun control laws have disarmed all but the criminals, and with an employer that enforces a ban against concealed carry on all of its employees (even those who travel into dangerous areas in the dark of night), victimizations like these are not at all likely to "stop quick"."

Comments ...

I found it amusing that several state officials were falling all over themselves telling businesses "you know, all you have to do is post this sign, and people can't legally bring their legally-concealed guns into your establishment, wink wink". I've never seen such verve in helping people out, as I've seen officials doing this kind of thing. If only we found that kind of enthusiastic help at the umemployment office ....

It is fundamentally foolish to have passed concealed carry, yet promote "private" bans that make it impossible to carry said weapon (not visible, we note) into a store, work, or even the service station for the 30 seconds it takes to buy the gasoline you pumped outside. (Isn't it illegal to have concealed weapon even on the property of a gas station if they post that sign, hence you've performed an illegal act just by pumping your gas? Hmm.)

Despite my scorn, we need to let businesses know that we concealed carry folk are not variably fused bombs just waiting to go off ... and let market forces have the chance to work some social magic. However again, with about 35000 people, that population of concealed-carriers is just another minority that is strongly dismissed by Ohioans.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about workers compensation insurance and paper carriers. Some newspapers do the right thing and pay for workers comp insurance for their carriers, such as the Columbus Dispatch, other papers, such as the Rag, declare their carriers independent contractors and don’t provide that coverage. Being this is the case, I bet Ms. Rhoton is going to be stuck with thousands of dollars in medical bills. Great going, Mr. Blockhead.
