New version of Toledo Talk

Poll says Everybody would beat Ford - Yeah, this is last week's entertainment news, but I'm catching up. "News 11 and Stanford Odesky and Associates conducted a poll to see who people would prefer for the office of Mayor of Toledo. Former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner 34.3%; Mayor Jack Ford 20.7%; Councilman Rob Ludeman 10.3%; Undecided 33.7%." This poll is great news for Ford. Carty knows better than most how wrong polls can be.

Maybe someone else can provide the details here, but I recall that in the 1993 Toledo mayoral election, local media outlets projected Carty's opponent, whoever that was, to be the winner. Is that correct? Did Odesky provide the exit polling data in 1993?

I could be wrong on this part, but I think Carty refused to concede because he wanted to wait until more votes were counted. And, of course, after the votes were counted, Carty was the winner. It was a massive embarrassment for local media and for whoever provided the exit polling data.

So Ford should be rejoicing over these poll numbers, especially with 33% undecided.

More from this latest poll:

Rationale for preferring Carty: "Good reputation/track record/gets things done 85.4%."

I wonder if having a local TV show helped with that one?

Now the poll really gets hard to believe:

"In a head to head race with the Mayor, Councilman Rob Ludeman leads with three in ten undecided. Ludeman 37.7%; Ford 32.0%; Undecided 30.3%."

Come on. Is anyone out there willing to bet their rare coins that Ludeman would defeat Ford?

I think it is important to point out that if I remember right, Rob had not announced his intention of running for Mayor when they took the poll.

I also think given that Carty hasn't announced his intent either he might have gotten a higher vote due to the "anybody but Ford" feeling out there and Carty is more visible than Rob or at least was as a potential candidate.

I am surprised that Ludeman pulled double-digits in a 3-way race.

He has been been running about as uninspired a campaign as I have ever seen. What's the deal, Rob?

This should be the time we are seeing Ludeman's mug everywhere, so he can start raking in the campaign dollars and scaring off Carty.

I have not seen Ludeman on TV since the announcement (granted, I am not a big-time TV viewer).

Is his strategy to let Carty and Jack slug it out, and then tiptoe over the bodies of his exhausted opponents?

Or is he waiting for a formal announcement from Carty before he begins his mayoral push?

Plus, you now have Keith Wilkowski sniffing around for a ticket to the 22nd floor:

Ludeman ripped Ford for leaving election signs up at the Erie Street Market over the weekend. Are they still there? I guess Ford had his birthday party/campaign fundraiser at ESM last Friday, but signs about electing Ford were still around the building on Sunday or even later.

I think Rob is still opposed to Ford's current amphitheater idea, which is up for a Council vote soon.

From the Blade story about Wilkowski:

"But Mr. Wilkowski said he did not ask respondents in his poll about a head-to-head race against Mr. Ford, suggesting that he would run only if Mr. Ford bows out."

Bows out? That's the first I've heard of that. Why would the notion of Ford bowing out even be suggested?

"Mr. Ford has said publicly that he will seek a second term, and last Friday held a fund-raising event that drew 600 supporters. "Jack Ford will be running and I expect him to have the full support of those of us who have supported him in the past," said James Ruvolo, the mayor's political consultant."

I guess we'll see if the rumor spewed on local talk radio about Mayor Ford bowing out of the race due to health problems is true or not. And I thought only blogs shoveled gossip.

I remember the 93 mayoral election fairly well.
Cartys' opponent was none other than local peace activist Mike Ferner.
All the polls had Ferner leading by double digits the week leading up to the election & the exit polling (I'm almost positive it was Odesky) had Ferner winning fairly easily (I think by 3-4 points.)
Odesky said the exit polling was off because people were embarrassed to say they voted for Carty.

Just goin by my sometimes faulty memory.

Yeah, BIG chance for Rob to differentiate himself:

Jack: Build the ampitheater.
Rob: No, don't build the ampitheater.

Vote: 9-3 along party lines; maybe McCloskey plays wild card and makes it 8-4. Although Betty Schultz, Republican-come-lately, might like a nice place to put up her feet, so back to 9-3.

It gets built, people keep baaa baaa baaa-ing along and everyone forgets about it in 2 months.

Hey Rob: How about "the vision thing?" If I am going to vote for Rob, I'd at least like to know that he is something besides anti-Jack.

Hey...we could put that to music (sung to the tune of the Who's "Happy Jack"):

Anti-Jack
Anti-Jack wasn't tall, but he wasn't fat
He wanted to wear the Mayor's fine hat
City Council would sing, he would vote the wrong way
Then he said he would run on Election Day

Voters couldn't find Rob
They tried, tried, tried
Wanted someone else for the job
They cried, cried, cried, cried, cried

But they couldn't stop Jack, or the ampitheater
And they couldn't elect Rob to be our leader

And they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldn't get Rob's lips to start flapping

Ahem.

My memories about this are from a difficult archival retrieval. I seem to remember something about a post election analysis being done to determine what went wrong with the exit polling, and "they" determined that people simply lied about who they voted for. But I didn't know people were embarrassed to say they voted for Carty. That's interesting, considering Carty won a second term and seems to be favored to win again.

jr,
”Maybe someone else can provide the details here, but I recall that in the 1993 Toledo mayoral election, local media outlets projected Carty's opponent, whoever that was, to be the winner. Is that correct?

Correct.

”Did Odesky provide the exit polling data in 1993?

He did to some, but likely not all.

”Rationale for preferring Carty: "Good reputation/track record/gets things done 85.4%."

See, Carty’s reputation is Golden

”Now the poll really gets hard to believe:

"In a head to head race with the Mayor, Councilman Rob Ludeman leads with three in ten undecided. Ludeman 37.7%; Ford 32.0%; Undecided 30.3%."

Come on. Is anyone out there willing to bet their rare coins that Ludeman would defeat Ford?

Don’t underestimate the level headed, mild mannered, quietly confident appearance of Rob. That may be just what those (few) that vote will be looking for, for once…

psyche777,
”I also think given that Carty hasn't announced his intent either he might have gotten a higher vote due to the "anybody but Ford" feeling out there and Carty is more visible than Rob or at least was as a potential candidate.

Way back in either ’93 or ’97 (maybe it was both), there was the ABC (Anybody But Carty) faction.

They may still be out there…

waiting…

historymike,

I can only hope that Rob takes it up a notch or two.

At least as high as the ’01 “Smiling Jack Ford campaign :-)

jr,
”I think Rob is still opposed to Ford's current amphitheater idea, which is up for a Council vote soon.”

Well, lets see if Rob starts showing some spine on the next vote. It won’t stop or influence the amphitheater vote's outcome, but it will show something to his potential voters…

"But Mr. Wilkowski said he did not ask respondents in his poll about a head-to-head race against Mr. Ford, suggesting that he would run only if Mr. Ford bows out."

-and-

”I guess we'll see if the rumor spewed on local talk radio about Mayor Ford bowing out of the race due to health problems is true or not.”

Well now… That would give Ford the perfect opportunity to bow out gracefully and save face.

”I remember the 93 mayoral election fairly well.

But, ya gotta understand, Ferner shot himself in the tongue, a day or so before the election by saying that he was an agnostic (actually, he said that he didn’t know whether or not there was a God).

That statement alone soured the 4th and the 14th wards against him, costing him the election.

historymike,

Let me just say that you have too much free time on your hands…

And, I don’t remember who Happy Jack was or where the song came from, but that dern melody keeps running through my head (over and over and over again). Thank you very much… :-)

And, that’s how I remember things.

Nurse! More meds…

I remember the ABBC days too. I can't vote since I live in the township but to be honest I don't know if Carty healthwise can handle it. I know I wouldn't vote Ford...I'd have to consider *gasp* voting for Rob

noooo not that....lol

(mental note to self don't move into Toledo until after the elections)

The latest Toledo City Paper has results from their web poll about voting for mayor. This poll is probably as meaningful as anything else:

Carty 51%
Ford 39%
Rob 7.5%
Jason Webber 2.5%

"Toledo Mayor Jack Ford has won endorsement for re-election from the political action committee formed to support candidates on the outs with the current leadership of the Lucas County Democratic Party."

"Mr. Ford was the only mayoral candidate to appear before the screening committee of LucasCountyDemocrats.org, said Wade Kapszukiewicz, a city councilman and screening committee chairman."

"LucasCountyDemocrats.org was formed to represent the party's "A team," who generally are supportive of Mr. Ford. The party's leadership since last year has been in the hands of the "B team" and is considered to be aligned with Carty Finkbeiner, who has not declared whether he will run for mayor."

"Toledo lawyer Keith Wilkowski resigned Wednesday as a board member of the group because he is considering a run for mayor."

Also, Mayor Ford dismissed the rumor about him pulling out of the race due to health problems.

"Toledo Mayor Jack Ford says rumors about him not seeking a second term are just that, rumors, and it's also wishful thinking on behalf of former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, who's expected to enter the race before the July filing deadline. The mayor says he's not worried about polls which show him trailing Carty and Councilman Rob Ludeman in head-on races."

Frankly, I think Toledo deserves Jack Ford. And given the voters' track record, lo these many years, I'd be surprised if he didn't win.

Toledoans have indicated a desire to commit suicide, let's continue giving them the ammunition they need.
