Mexican ID Cards Approved by Commissioners - Maggie Thurber - you go girl!

I cannot believe that Lucas County offices and agencies now have to accept I.D. cards for people who may be here illegally. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are two federal agencies that are against them because of the potential for abuse.

The Mexican embassy churns them out and why not. It's great for them. Why spend their scarce resources when we will spend ours? Banks also LOVE them because now they can open accounts and fill them with illegal money before sending it back to Mexico.

What grinds me the most about this is the level of paperwork and groveling a legal immigrant goes through just to stay in this country from visa to green card to citizenship if you can get that far in this anti-terror government we have. But a Mexican illegal no longer has to be in fear. Annoying as hell.

I realize companies (around here) appreciate the cheap, uncomplaining labor. I will not employ illegal aliens. I will not hire people on disability and pay them under the table. I will not offer comp time instead of overtime. All these things would save me a tremendous amount of money. But staying profitable under the law is my responsibility.

Should people be able to have dignity despite difficult circumstances? Absolutely. But dignity and illegal cannot possibly be in the same sentence and no amount of commissioner proclamations or i.d. cards is going to change that.

My Mother and I came to America in 1957, I was 2 years old...

I can tell you this...she had to work...work very hard for her citizenship...there were no Social Services to help her...or...and ID Card...on top of all that...I remember as a child...some referring to her as a NAZI...(World War II) were on many minds still...so there was prejudice against her for being new in this Country from Germany.

My Mother became very successful in this Country on her own...

So...I think you know how I feel about the Mexican People allowed to live here only needing an ID Card...

It's time to start writing some local officials and get an end put to this.

From my initial research, it looks like 1.) this is illegal under Federal immigration law and 2.) county officials (not the county, but the officials themselves) can be held legally liable for any actions by the illegal aliens.

Finally, we need to get the city to declare the document unusable in the city and that anyone using it for any sort of government business will automatically be assumed to be an illegal alien and detained.

When Pete ran and was elected as a county commissioner, there was many of us that knew Pete in council. He was as big a moron then. Now his ego is bursting from between his ears and it's affecting his "long-term" vision.

This isn't the 1950's anymore, I'm sorry to say. As being personally involved with Homeland Security and the Immigration process, I find it insulting for people who have applied for and are enduring the political red tape to be dismissed by some illegal card for illegal immigrants.

Pete and Tina, hispanics only use the bank to transfer their money to their families back in Mexico. They won't open accounts in these banks, they will not contribute to the community, other than personal needs, hispanics do not trust authority. How do I know this? I live within an area with the largest concentration of orange and grapefruit groves in Florida, that's how. Try doing some research.

I am anxious for the day Toledo and Lucas County wakes up and stops electing morons to look over them.

"The resolution caused concern to others, who fear the cards are a way of legitimizing illegal immigrants. The commissioners received letters from various individuals and organizations, including 9/11 Families for a Secure America, opposing acceptance of the cards."

"The city of Toledo passed such a resolution some four years ago. The matricula consular is recognized in some fashion in 178 banks, 163 counties, 377 cities, and 1180 police and sheriff departments in the United States , according to the Mexican Consulate. In northern Ohio , the cities of Fostoria , Toledo , Cleveland , Cincinnati , and Columbus have recognized such cards; so has the county of Sandusky and the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Offices."

"The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is known in many circles as a hate group. Last week, Sue Tulley, representing FAIR, spoke on the Bob Frantz newsradio show (WSPD 1370AM, Toledo) against the recognition of the matricula consular—or Mexican ID card—by Lucas County via the Lucas County Commissioners and a pending resolution."

"Tulley criticized the Mexican Consul and Consulate, claiming that they only issued such identification cards to raise funds for the office. She also claimed that only Mexicans that were illegal obtained such a card and that all of México was corrupt. She also maintained that she would provide the commissioners with forged matricula consular depicting the three commissioners, regardless of the legality of such manipulation."

(The other FAIR group is Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting.)

Apparently, the Sue Tulley FAIR did provide Wozniak, Gerken, and Thurber with their own Mexican photo ID cards to show how easy they are to forge.

So prior to the meeting, Thurber offered to change the language to say that the Mexican ID card was good ONLY WITH the IDs the US government issues to foreign nationals in our country.

That was not what FLOC (Farm Labor Organizing Committee) wanted because it would have required a passport or the residency documents that the US issues IN ADDITION TO the Mexican ID card. Meaning - illegal aliens would be easy to identify. From the meeting, it was clear that the Mexican consular rep was okay with this, but Baldamar Vasquez (sp?), FLOC leader, was not. So, since FLOC didn't like it, neither did Pete and Tina.

Pete criticized the emails and letters and calls against the cards because they came from people across the state and the country. Get a clue, Pete, they're most likely US citizens!

But the scariest part was when Pete said he was going to vote for the Mexican ID cards because he was responding to his constituents. Maybe Pete needs a refresher course in government because the last time I checked, illegal aliens are NOT constituents of Lucas County Commissioners...unless he's confused and thinks he represents Mexico...

That's too bad, because unless someone realizes the direction the "A" team is taking Lucas County, it will be way too late to change things back.

Pete and Tina, when on Toledo City Council, voted amongst the majority to authorize the cards in the city. This is just one thing. Now that they're unleashed onto the county, they're dragging their agendas with them.

Don't think for a minute the entertainment stops after these cards. Gauging from their track records, poor Maggie is fighting a 40 foot wave with a garbage can lid.

Agreed about FLOC. When push comes to shove, Pete knows how his two favorite backers want him to vote.

That is, the UAW and FLOC. Can't anger the big money, now can we, Pete?

Pete's in a tough spot though, folks. Many unions are for tougher laws on immigrants, due to the wage-depressing effect they can have for naturalized citizens.

I guess FLOC tossed him more bananas than the other PACs and unions.

Or they yelled louder.

Here I was under the impression Pete was working for the county, not political action committies.

When will a politican step forward that has a set of logic and common sense the size of coconuts?

It's antics like this that show Lucas County what happens when you elect a corrupt Toledo Politican into a County Position.

I'm curious about the mechanics of this. How exactly did it come about? Does Lucas county politico get a fax from left-wing organization etc., which he then dutifully follows or what?

Even so, what this action and others by local Democratic officials tell is this: Lucas county is infected with the wacky liberal Toledo cancer. Communities in Lucas that touch neighboring counties should go to the state and petition to leave Lucas and join those other counties.

If you live in Toledo and what to leave, don't stop at the Toledo city limits, move out of Lucas county completely.

My personal view is this: Mexico should stop exporting its failures (not the people per se, but its failed policies as a government etc.) abroad.

Because the Mexican government has failed and continues to fail provide a suitable economic environment for its citizenry, it deliberately encourages and enables the victims of its failures to leave the country for the US.

In the US some people claim they provide cheap labor or, in other words, lube for the domestic US economy.

I disagree. It merely enables inequitable cost shifting.

For example, consider a manufacturer. His manufacturing process results in effluents, which he dumps into the local river, which pollute. However, this results in a lower bottom line and greater profits, which the manufacturer profits. Society at large picks up the costs of the pollution. Is this fair? Well, not really. And it's something that liberals love to point out when they're making environmental arguments.

Well, the situation with these illegal Mexicans is exactly the same. Some businesses benefit economically from their alleged cheap labor. However, society and the economy at large picks up the costs: health care, schools, the fact that illegals commit crimes etc. etc.

So rather than being a net plus for the domestic US economy, they are a net loss.

Where is the left here? Well, curiously, they side with those few businesses that benefit economically.

Why? Probably lots of reasons, but an important one is voting. Hispanics who are already here and been granted citizenship and those illegals who aren't above voting illegally in US elections.

The minuteman project has proven, despite vigorous opposition by liberals and the liberal media, that it is possible to close our borders. Moreover, business that provide employment to illegals should be fined heavily.

We need to encourage lawmakers, both Republican and Democrat, that illegals are unacceptable both from an economic and a national security perspective.

Bush hasn't been receptive to this and for this I fault him. But Democrats are much more likely than not to be in favor of policies which promote illegal immigration.

The US has waited years to long to address this issue.

What's Marcy's view? ;-)

All legal immigrants already have identification, it's called an Employment Authorization Card, and it's issued by The Department of Homeland Security, Pete. My law-abiding british-citizen wife has one. Because my wife is following the application process by the letter of the law, she has a SS#, a Driver's License and no need for "excuses to violate federal law legally" with a cheap immigration card.

Ohh wait, my wife isn't even ELIGIBLE to receive this "immigration card" anyway because it's ethnically biased, which in turn is discrimination. We discriminate against legal immigrants with illegal immigrants. Wow Pete did his homework.

Altho I am sensitive to the plight of the mexican immigrant, as an American, I am insulted by this violation of Homeland Security by a nit wit and his pet president of their pandering to the hispanic community by breaking the law.

A thought just occurred to me. Whatever happened with this Toledo issue? The story appeared in the Blade in November 2003, the same day Dr. Richard Florida spoke at the the Art Museum about the Creative Class. Florida said cities should embrace talent, technology, and tolerance. I don't know what Toledo decided about building colors.

"The bright palette of Mexico and other Latino cultures might have to be muted under a proposed set of standards for building facades in Toledo. Several buildings in the 1200 block of Broadway are painted in bright colors evocative of Mexico."

Looks like people just want to bring a bit of their culture into Toledo. I think City Council was to vote on the issue in December 2003 or in early 2004. How does one find out what Toledo decided on this issue, and find out how Council voted if it even went to a vote? Just call downtown?

In my opinion, this is or was an absurd idea considered by Council. It ruins the look of the ethnic neighborhoods. Maybe Council made exceptions.

I'm curious. Pete Gerken was on Toledo City Council at that time. If the building issue went to a Council vote, how did Gerken vote? Did Gerken and Toledo crack down on building colors? Are building colors more of a security threat than phony ID cards?

I heard the guy who started the Minuteman Project was going to run in a special election for a vacated seat in Congress - California, I believe - but that he's getting all kinds of flack from Republicans and the White House because he's opposed to the current lack of action on the borders.

Can someone help me find out about this? Thanks!

Chris Cox resigned in California to become the SEC chairman, and there are several candidates for his open seat in District 48. Jim Gilchrist is the guy from the Minuteman Project that is one the candidates.

Strangely, Subcomandante Bob has come amazingly close to the truth.

We could use someone like him on Toledo's City Council (a.k.a. a stepping stone the Lucas County's Commissoner's position)...

(I would have ordinarily noted this post as sarcasm, if it weren't so true.)

As it happens, we don't have to take this crap out of the county. The commissioners vote doesn't matter one iota.

For all of you that would like to take action on this issue, I submit the following letter, as taken from http://www.cairco.org/matricula/matricula_toolkit.html

October 30, 2002

The Honorable Wellington E. Webb
Mayor, City and County of Denver
1437 Bannock St., Room 350
Denver, CO 870202

Dear Mayor Webb:

This letter serves to inform you that the Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (CAIR) believes that you have violated federal law, including certain criminal statutes, possibly putting yourself and the City and County of Denver in legal jeopardy.

Two of your actions of particular concern to CAIR are:

(1) Your designating $15,000 of a Federal Community Block Grant to support the operations of a job center known to serve illegal aliens, and

(2) Your move to have departments in the City and County of Denver accept as valid identification the Mexican government-issued Matricula Consular ID card.

By your actions, CAIR believes you to be violating at least all of the following provisions of the United States Code: 8 U.S.C. Section 1324(a)(1)(A)(iii), 8 U.S.C. Section 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv), 8 U.S.C. Section 1324(a)(1)(A)(v)(I), and 8 U.S.C. Section 1324(a)(1)(A)(v)(II). Accordingly, if you persist in continuing the above-referenced polices, CAIR will, within 30 days of the date of this letter, be filing complaints with the appropriate authorities, including the U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).

Beyond these legal considerations, CAIR views your actions as reckless, arbitrary, and dismissive of your constituents. Polls show overwhelming sentiment against the actions you undertook. Your apparently covert agreements with the Mexican Government to further its agenda in Colorado throw into question your allegiances and your public policy judgment.

CAIR encourages you to reverse your actions regarding the two matters outlined above.

Sincerely,

Mike McGarry, Spokesman, Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform

Fred Elbel, Co-Director, Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform

cc: J. Wallace Wortham, Jr., Denver City Attorney
Michael M. Comfort, District Director, Immigration and Naturalization Service
John W. Suthers, United States Attorney, District of Colorado
Denver City Council members: Reynolds, Barnes-Gelt, Haynes, Thomas, Ortega, Wedgeworth, MacKenzie, Flowbeck, Foster, Martinez, Hackworth, and Gallcher
U.S. Congressman Tom Tancredo
Richard D. Lamm
Thomas E. Goodreid, Attorney at Law

As with many things, change only comes when many come together. Public servants sometimes require re-familiarization with the word 'service'. The Rule of Law will be respected in Northwestern Ohio, and the citizens of this area will drive that respect.

Everyone who wants to pitch in on this please signify by saying 'AYE'.
