MARCY KAPTUR FOR GOVERNOR??? - Been reading Labor Unions have asked her run...

Marcy is LOVED as she FIGHTS against NAFTA -AND- CAFTA...her parents both "BLUE COLLAR" Auto Workers. (Though, I have heard Marcy actually did vote for NAFTA along with Kerry Edwards...)

For the most part it seems Marcy is LOVED in Ohio...yet, I have to ask...is Marcy more pro Blue Collar Worker? Can she entice White Collar Business???

We commented on the possibilities of Hillary for President...appreciate your comments to the possibilities of Marcy for Governor.

She would be a formidible candidate. There have been groundless whispers about her sexual orientation. Unfortunately I think that happens to anyone who remains single. Look for the Republican machine to exploit that if possible. Can she win big business in Ohio? That depends on what she has to say about corporate taxes. The picture for business in Ohio is already dismal. I don't think she could make it worse! I think the third rail issues in Ohio politics, besides taxes and jobs, are school funding and property taxes. Her positions there would be pivotal. There is no doubt in my mind that she can do an effective job adressing current problems and move Ohio forward.

I would run if I could find someone reliable to be lt. governor.

Seriously.

The one thing you could be sure about is that I don't have any friends anywhere. So I wouldn't be taking money from special interests and wouldn't be appointing all my corrupt buddies to office.

Would any of you vote for me?

Anonymouscoward, I like that that you wouldn't have your fingers in any special interest kiddie...and...from what I have seen...you are a passionate, intelligent, comical, sarcastic poster here on Toledo Talk...

Yes, you have my vote...will the ballot read -anonymouscoward- for Governor??? I hope NOT...-anonymouscoward- just doesn't have LEADERSHIP ring to it...definetly change the name!

From that Blade article:

"[Kaptur] worries about raising campaign funds and giving up her seniority in Washington."

I'll look at this from Marcy's viewpoint. I can get the easy re-election win for the House in Nov 2006 without hardly even trying and remain on the House Appropriations Committee, or I could become a longshot with a tiny warchest of funds in a statewide race filled with big money that will still probably go to a Republican.

From her bio:

"Congresswoman Kaptur fought vigorously to win a seat on the House Appropriations Committee. Since elected, she has risen in seniority and is now the senior Democratic woman on Appropriations. She has secured subcommittees on Agriculture, the leading industry in her state, and Defense."

The main desire by people elected to Congress is to get on as many committees as possible. That's where some real power resides. I can't see giving that up, unless winning the governor's race was realistic. The Blade would definitely help her.

"For the most part it seems Marcy is LOVED in Ohio."

Where do you get that? She might be loved in northwest Ohio, but I don't know if it's statewide.

If she ran for governor, you know an opponent at some point will bring up Marcy's March 1st, 2003 comments that appeared in the religion section of the Blade.

Marcy said:

"One could say that Osama bin Laden and these non-nation-state fighters with religious purpose are very similar to those kind of atypical revolutionaries that helped to cast off the British crown."

"I think that one thing that people of faith understand about the world of Islam is that the kind of insurgency we see occurring in many of these countries is an act of hope that life will be better using Islam as the only reed that they have to lean on."

"I think that people of faith understand that for many of the terrorists, their actions are acts of sacred piety to the point of losing their lives. And I think that people of faith understand that there is a heavy religious overtone to the opposition."

It doesn't matter what her intentions were with those comments. An opponent will figure out a way to use them against her, and that could hurt her in other areas of the state.

Then on the Sunday in Dec 2003 when the Saddam Hussein capture was announced to the world, Marcy was interviewed by WSPD. Marcy said:

"I think Saddam's capture is, in some ways, irrelevant."

Marcy also said Saddam was the "bulwark" against Middle East terrorism. In other words, that region was better off with Saddam in power, according to Ohio's possible future governor.

The Iraqis held an another historic free election this week. Big turnout for the vote. Good thing Marcy doesn't need the Iraqis' vote because I doubt they would agree with her.

Marcy has been good for the environment, but what about the rest of her voting record? 20+ years in the House provides an opponent with a lot of reading and a lot of possible ammunition to use against her.

I have heard Marcy though, she passionately fights NAFTA AND CAFTA actually did in the 90's agree with the GLOBALIZATION and what it would bring for Americans...did she vote for NAFTA as Kerry did? I have tried to find RESEARCH on the INTERNET...cannot find a definte NO or YES to her voting on NAFTA...

I had heard she ultimately voted YES...as issue she pushed for was passed...

Anyone know if there is TRUTH in any of this???

-jr- I had said Marcy Kaptur is LOVED in Ohio...as she is by MANUFACTURING, LABOR UNIONS...I had asked in my TOPIC has she the capabilities to attract White Collar Business...asking...she is LOVED by BLUE COLLAR only???

"She might be loved in northwest Ohio, but I don't know if it's statewide."

Even that's a stretch. She's relatively well liked in a heavily Democratic district of NW Ohio.

----------------------------------------

It's not. Trust me. She's vilified on most (statewide) political boards, even by some Dems who feel she's been in far too long. In my opinion, this is all bullshit. She'll never give up a lifetime job she doesn't even have to campaign for. I've read she has over $600,000 in her 'warchest.' Undoubtedly, that's money left over from past 'campaigns', where she didn't have to lift a finger. Believe me-she will NOT run for governor.

Whether Marcy is serious about running state-wide or not, the publicity of even having her talked about is good for her. Right now, it's a win-win situation.

Win - she's seriously being considered.
win - she's getting state-wide name id from the consideration.
win - people are talking about the pros and cons of her in the position of governor...always a help to see what your supporters and opponents will say.
win - some supporters may give her more money to encourage her to either stay or run - regardless, it's still a donation.
win - people will talk about what she'd have to give up, helping those in her district "understand" what a powerful position she already has in Congress.

I'm sure there are more 'wins' if I thought about it longer.

And no, A/C, I wouldn't vote for you for governor - at least not now...I'd wait and base my decision on your positions on issues I think are important - not on the personality you show and comments you make here.

That would only be fair.

I couldn’t vote for Ms. CrapTurds unless maybe she was running against Tax Hike Taft for the governor’s office. The reason I don’t like the idea of crapturds in the governor’s office has nothing to do with the fact she is a woman or might be gay. It is about the job I expect her to do. I have a long memory and I remember her initial support of nafta. Then she found out that free trade on a tilted playing field wasn’t a good thing. Ross Perot could have told her that long before she took her position and then changed it. Now the question comes down to, do I want someone being the governor who doesn’t have the ability to foresee the consequences of their legislation?

Unfortunately, http://www.vote-smart.org only contains voting record info from 1995-present. NAFTA was signed in 1994.

"For information concerning Key Votes from 1991-1994, please call our Voter's Research Hotline at 1-888-VOTE-SMART (1-888-868-3762) and one of our researchers can look up any vote you need."

Here is Kaptur's voting info anyway.

Kaptur's May 11, 2005 speech urging a NO vote on CAFTA.

Marcy said:

"When NAFTA passed in the early 1990s, we actually had a trade surplus with Mexico, which immediately turned into a trade deficit; and with Canada we have doubled the deficit that we already had. When we signed the agreement with China, which those of us who were here voted against, we did not get any more jobs. We did not get any more income. All we got was more trade deficit."

"U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, D.-- Ohio, recognized by activists on both sides of the trade issue as Congress' closest watcher of these matters, notes that the overwhelming majority of newspapers in the United States enthusiastically endorsed NAFTA. Of the nation's 20 largest newspapers, all essentially supported the deal. Indeed, the largest-- circulation newspaper in the country to actively and consistently oppose NAFTA, according to Kaptur, was her hometown daily, The Blade in Toledo."

She voted against NAFTA, but the only source I can find that says that is a UTU newsletter.

Jan 9 Blade story:

"U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur will pass on the Ohio governor's race and seek re-election instead. Miss Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat, told The Blade yesterday that she will pull the papers necessary to run for a 13th term sometime today, ending her latest exploration of a statewide run. She said the decision turned on distaste for the massive fund-raising she'd need to replace term-limited Gov. Bob Taft and worries about giving up two decades of congressional seniority."
