Comments ...
One wonders how many pro-Bush folks will be picketing outside of the hall during his visit.
Let's do some brainstorming.
What kind of signs would these pro-Bush folks be displaying??
"Murtha-Hackett-Sheehan
Traitors!"

simmah down there limedrops.
I'm just worried that Hackett won't make it through the primary.
And what really honks me off is the concept of primaries, and particularly the fact that in Ohio, voting in one automatically registers you to a party. So I refuse to vote in a primary because I refuse to automatically be registered to a particular party.

One wonders why "pro-Bush folks" would give a damn about Hackett at UT? And since when does pro-Bush automatically translate into anti-Hackett? Not everyone has the Szollosi-Redfern-Isenberg-Kaptur political mindset.

I disagree with you on that one AC, part of the problem of why we end up with some of the candidates we have is because enough people don't participate in the primary process.
I am pro-Hackett for many reasons, but even if I wasn't, felt it was important to note he was going to be here. I'm hoping things work out so I can meet him, I had the chance to talk to his wife in a telephone conference last month.
The Meet the Bloggers group is trying to branch out more not and not just hold events in Cleveland. I'm hoping that we can get enough interest here to be able to hold such events here in Toledo.

I disagree with you on that one AC, part of the problem of why we end up with some of the candidates we have is because enough people don't participate in the primary process.
Given that a large number of people don't want to register a party preference, or don't want to have to go through switching parties when they want to vote for a particular candidate of a different party, or want to pick the best people out of BOTH sides, well of course people don't participate in the primary process.
The primary process is just the two-party system's way of making the public pay for deciding a popularity contest for the party.
Either the party should decide internally on one candidate, or we should reform the election system to be some form of Instant Runoff Voting, so we can have a REAL popularity contest between all comers.
Please oh please just give me a list of candidates and the ability to rank 'em in order of how I feel about 'em.

but until that happens? Not voting in the primary can create a situation where we end up with a choice of John Kerry and George Bush...

As AC pointed out, that's the big flaw in the voting process, right alongside 'none of the above'.

Is this event open to the general public, or just members of the young democrats club?

Not voting in the primary can create a situation where we end up with a choice of John Kerry and George Bush...
... but if I vote in a primary, I register with a party and automatically am subject to bashing by certain members of this august forum for being an evil loony liberal or a RINO or what have you.
The last thing either party wants is competition, and the second to last thing either party wants is a fair fight.

Okay, I'm not going to convince you AC so I give on that one.
Jack, it is technically open to anyone 35 or under who is interested in the Young Democrats group or curious about what either men has to say or a supporter of Ben Konop who will be speaking from 7-8 or Paul Hackett who will be there from 8-9 p.m.
Or if you are a part of the media. Paul will be returning to Toledo again, I get direct information from the campaign so I'm sure I'll post about that or if you want direct information on Paul Hackett:
