Ludeman replaces Szollosi with McCloskey - "Toledo City Council President Rob Ludeman replaced Councilman Frank Szollosi as chairman of economic development and appointed Councilman Robert McCloskey in his place. Mr. Ludeman said Mr. McCloskey wanted the seat and is interested in the Marina District, one of the city's top economic development projects." What a crock. McCloskey doesn't give a damn about the Marina District project. He proved that at last summer's Marina District charette. Ask Ujvagi.

And many councilmen, including Rob said that that way McCloskey does business is "not the way we do business" in the city.

Anyone will be better than Szollosi in that position IMO. It doesn't help at all to have someone who isn't pro-business in that position. McCloskey may not be the best for the position, but I dare say he will be more facilitating to businesses than his predecesor.

Facilitating only if you pay the right price! During the campaign the one thing that galled me was Sobczak and McCloskey saying they were pro-business. During a strike, Sobczak condoned shooting at Overnite Transportation trucks and McCloskey, a supporter of Dennis Kucinich, going on WSPD touting his pro-business agenda caused me to roll my eyes.

Was this a decision of the lesser of two evils? Wasn't there anyone more qualified? It hate to say this, ugggghhggghh..... but Szollosi might be right.

It doesn't seem prudent to appoint a chairman of economic development who pretty much single handily retarded the development of the Marina District!

Sounds like I'm repeating jr, but that's how I feel.

Duh, I just realized...

Do you think Ludeman did this to create an allie in case he is in danger of loosing the Council Presidency?

I’ve managed to ignore Toledo politics for a while. Actually, I’ve been trying to ignore local politics entirely, but then the latest development boondoggle surfaces like a World War II U-boat and I’m compelled to form an opinion and write about it.

I followed the link to the Marina District Charette and read about it, and found the comments to be very informative. I didn’t know what a charette was, and so looked the word up in the OED to discover that a charette is defined as:

1. A wheeled vehicle or conveyance. a. for persons or goods; a carriage, chariot, cart, wagon, etc.

b. A war-chariot. (In biblical or classical use.)

I’m fairly well read, and I didn’t know this word. Many of the people who post here demonstrate a good deal of intelligence and education, and I’ll bet none of them could define it either. It sounds vaguely like some kind of small meeting or something.

This misuse of a word would seem to be a small thing, but I believe it’s symptomatic of the development problems and general management problems of Toledo and the surrounding towns. It obfuscates the real meaning, which seems to be in keeping with the multitude of hidden agendas associated with a development project that is looking more like Portside everyday.

JR is quite right. McCloskey is a poor choice, but think for a minute or two. McCloskey may not be able to attend the next Charette due to his legal problems. That is, unless there’s another McCloskey somewhere and I’ve got the two mixed up. So who will be hitting for McCloskey if he goes away for a while?

Very true madjack. From what I hear the prosecutor is ready to proceed in the McCloskey bribery and coersion case.

I've got a subcontractor friend of mine that has done work for the city in a sub-sub-contract way, and I was told that McCloskey was "The Go To Guy" to get things done as far as getting work permits and such.

I wasn't the least surprised to hear this, but Frank isn't really prepared for this level of politics.

Frank, you do have a bit to go before achieving "scumbag" status, but don't you find it odd that the two people that you've had issues with publically were put in these spots?

I'm getting the feeling Frank's getting squeezed.

I'm also getting the feeling that it's becomming political instead of "For Toledo" again in Council Chambers, and something needs to be done.

Altho I am NOT for "re-doing the vote for Council President", I do think Rob better think with his head and not be influenced. This "political posturing and sucking ass" protocol bullshit better stop.

MJ, I also had trouble finding a definition for charette. The best one I found was located here.

charette - an intensive effort to complete something before the deadline

While I'm in my mood, Carty better stop jerking around and start following up on his campaign slop.

Riding the bus with your cronies and writing an article about your "happy happy joy joy" agenda is one thing, Carty, but you should stick with promoting Toledo and getting some conventions in this town instead of fucking things up.

Carty, you looked all pretty during the debates and your campaign, but perish the thought that you're back to your old stupid ass "real estate ventures" and "backroom politiking".

What is fucking wrong with these people? Why can't people work together and get Toledo back on it's feet and get past "getting rich off Toledo's ass". Grow up.

Engineers, architects, planners, and developers attended last summer's Marina District public brainstorming session. But only one Toledo City Councilperson participated: George Sarantou. 12 on Toledo City Council and only one could find the time to spend a few hours on a Saturday contributing to "one of the city's top economic development projects."

And if only one participated, wouldn't you have thought it would have been McCloskey, since he has supposedly been out there allegedly fighting for the east side for years?

Yes, I agree that this looks like Ludeman throwing a few bones to the "B" team for supporting his presidency.

As far as the new assignment, the only thing the Toledo Troglodyte has ever been able to "develop" is an ever-growing trail of slime on the path behind him.

We can only hope that Dave's efforts get this semi-literate clown unseated.

A little FYI for everyone:

Charette wasn't misused in this instance. I had no idea what it was, and in a similar move as MadJack I did a little research on it.....actually just googled it. :-) Ends up that Wikipedia defines it like this:

"A charrette (often spelled charette and often called design charrette) is an urban planning technique for consulting with all stakeholders. Charrettes are typically intense, possibly multi-day meetings involving municipal officials, developers and local residents."

A two-day UpTown/Warehouse District charette was held in October. I still hope to get the notes from that one. Unless you attend these things and give them your e-mail address, you don't get any info about the meetings. If it's a public meeting, they need to make the meeting notes publicly available on a website.

Nuff said.
