Carty: Is the honeymoon over? - Carty has been coming down on some issues and irritating some of the people that originally supported him. Case-in-point, on Bob Frantz's Eye on Toledo, Bob read the letter from the Chamber to Carty regarding tuning down the rhetoric on Westgate. So I ask you, is the Carty honeymoon over? What do you think?

In a word: definitely. Carty created this knight on a white horse scenario in his mind (and many voters’ minds) in which he will single handedly save Princess Toledo. I’m sorry but no one person can do that. Ronald Reagan pulled us out of lot tough times by picking his battles and working with people. So far on Westgate all I’ve seen is “it’s my way or the highway mentality.” Heck I just heard on the radio that Carty now threatening to sue over Costco.![]()
I think Carty has developed two mental conditions: he’s become a narcissist, which developed during the first reign as mayor. In his second reign he’s developed a superiority/Christ complex. Does anyone remember all the times Carty broke down crying when he didn’t win an election? His world had collapsed.
Toledo is his world, and with out Carty whole heartedly believes Toledo will die. Even before he was mayor you couldn’t go anywhere and not know Carty. I was eight when I first remember hearing about Carty. Then Carty became the mayor and his craving for attention came to a head and I believe is what caused him to become a narcissist. He literally became the king of his world. He worked got his power and terms extended through the strong mayor form of government. Then he was term limited out.
For several years he was in exile from his throne. That had to bruise his ego almost to the point of irrevocable despondence. Fortuantely he had his TV show and radio shows to keep him alive.
Carty had to watch as Jack Ford ran his beloved kingdom into the ground. A major company was leaving, Toledo is losing population left and right, Northtowne closed, and COSI was failing. Now Carty has his precious throne back. He will save the city as Christ will save all believers. I’m afraid that losing the construction at Westgate may only be the first step towards something much bigger.
I can see us losing some or all of Jeep and 5/3 because these lowly serfs dare as the king and lord for some concessions. How dare they ask to pay a lower tribute (read tax dollars) and more control over their land. If someone (like the city council, a community advocacy group, or the Blade) doesn’t pull him back soon we’re going to go into a decline faster the Taft and Ford could instigate working together could.
Carty gets results (the just depends if he’s micromanaging a situation, or if he can pull back and let others make some decisions/)

Is the honeymoon over? Gosh, from my perspective, there was no marriage only the continuation of beatings and abuse separated by a 4-year hiatus.

I really don't think there was any honeymoon expected this time around. We already knew what Carty was all about and how he did business. There's no "feeling out" period necessary.
How quickly we forget just how sick we were of a mayor who refused to take any stand or take any action. Regardless of the Westgate issue, I still think Carty was the better choice between the two.

its all over except for the Court date. not in office a full 30 days and he is already looking at more court costs. what does he get special appearance fees and swag for walking into court rooms ? he ought to collect frequent flier miles or something for all the trips he makes on the cities behalf.

If Carty takes it to court, Westgate will be an election issue in the fall of 2009, since Westgate will look then as it does today with no new development in sight and Costco long gone to the burbs. Carty said as long as he's in office, the Westgate owners will follow the 20:20 and Walk Westgate plans. So be it. The Westgate owners will simply wait until Carty is out of office before moving forward with their redevelopment.

Strange that you might mention that, tekrat. Are those 5/3 buildings still up?
Why, yes, yes indeed they are. And here 5/3 was saying that they HAD TO remake the area for couriers to park safely or they'd lose their insurance. {cue wailing}
Apparently 5/3 is running its vault without insurance, then. I mean, either that, or they LIED.
Maybe 5/3 should burn them, like the Arbuckle Building was burned. The city would then tear down the remains (QUICKLY, thereby avoiding a proper arson investigation) and that poor, poor corporation won't have to spend the money themselves. The poor dears!
And don't even get me started on Jeep. Tearing down a neighborhgood just because a corporation wants the land is not a "concession". It's theft.

But that's what HAS to be done, in an important sense. If your income doesn't meet your expenses, you have to drop your expenses. Ford really was a do-nothing, but that in itself allowed some sensible actions to occur, like letting expenses go.

I agree. How DARE they? Do they owe less taxes than anyone else? Can my landlord get a 50% reduction in his property taxes as O-I was recently granted for One Seagate? Lower taxes for certain entities is not something Carty et al should or can give. Yet he got elected again ... and that proves that Toledo is not under adult supervision from the so-called citizens. We can't control Carty since we aren't even in control of our own minds.
