New version of Toledo Talk

    February 8, 2006

Is Maggie Thurber our former friend "intrepid"? - You know, for almost six months now, the rumors around town have been pretty thick with the idea that a former prolific member of this website, "intrepid", was actually Lucas County Commissioner Maggie Turber.

I wasn't ever really quite sure, but I thought it was definitely an interesting idea. You see, "intrepid" always seemed to weigh in when a post was made about the County or a county agency. "intrepid" frequently corrected facts, added unpublished knowledge to the topics and stirred the pot. On the whole, it was almost too coincidental.

Well, today, I was reading the Toledo Free Press and Commissioner Magie Thurber's column about the arena. On 2/8/2006, Maggie Thurber writes...

"First, we already have several plans, so why do we need a new one, especially at a cost of $12,000 per month? Second, the citizens of Toledo have already decided on a site. While my personal preference is not to put an arena on our prime waterfront property, I support the public's decision to put it in the Marina District. Any change in location should go back to the voters for support."

On August 18, 2005, "intrepid" posted a breaking news story titled "New Arena going to county." In multiple posts, "intrepid" said the following...

"So who didn't see this one coming???? While I agree that it makes sense to put the arena downtown (I'm a firm believer in NOT putting facilities that draw your attention inward on our prime waterfront property which should draw your attention outward), I question the city wanted the county to take over the project."

"I also think if the County's going to spend county money on this - they ought to come back to the voters for our approval!"

And there is certainly more where that came from! One of the great things about Toledo Talk is the ability to read all of its posts over the last three years and I encourage you to do so.

Was "intrepid" actually Maggie Thuber the whole time and was she purposefully concealing her identity from the voters and readers of this site? Why did "intrepid" disappear so abrubtly late last December with the flimsy excuse that she was moving away? Why did the lion share of "MaggieThurber" posts begin in early January?

I would think that someone so interested in the goings-on in her community like "intrepid" was would still be interested even after leaving. "BrianinFlorida" stays in touch and he doesn't live here.

It's my personal belief that Maggie Thruber hasn't been telling the whole truth about the Noe scandal this past year ... and now that she's considering running again for Commissioner, this new information should be public.

I don't want to think this about an elected official, but look at the evidence. If "intrepid" isn't Maggie Thurber and is still reading Toledo Talk, I encourage that person to stand up and prove me wrong.

Comments ...

No, Intrepid is not Maggie Thurber nor is Intrepid in this area anymore to be able to comment.

I realize when it comes to those who want to remain anonymous there is always the tendency to try to "guess" who someone is.

I fail to see the evidence given Maggie Thurber has had only 11 comments here, Intrepid 635 and if you check her profile? Intrepid lists her name and email. So if you really are that curious? Email her and ask her if she's "Maggie Thurber". I'm sure she'd get a chuckle out of it.

Seems like your entire existence here is to uncover the intrepid/maggie conspiracy, tirednipping.

You seem convinced, but is the common use of the word prime waterfront property the best you can do?

I'll bet Jr could tell some great stories by comparing IP addresses.

Ah, come on, no politician in their right mind goes on a blog like this one & tells who they really are-though I know, I know, we've had a few exceptions to that here. But, by and large-you know how some of us rip So-Lousy, Carty, Copeland, Wade The Wonder Boy,Ludeman, and the list goes on & on, depending on everyone's personal preferences.

I think it's actually a wise way to both remain anonymous & get a feel of what the citizenry are thinking, at the same time. Since they already catch flak at open council meetings & neighborhood meetings (not that I feel all that much sympathy for them), why compound it on the web? Actually, if it was Thurber, It would mean I'd respect her more, since Intrepid was one of my favorite people on here. The down side to it, if there is one, would be they'd 'pick our brains' and discover more ways to hoodwink us. Maybe this is just another "Urban Legend", though. :-D That's about all of my two cents worth. Either way, you can't keep people (even the politicos) from goin' anywhere they want to on the internet.

No, but Intrepid was "close" to Maggie, according to a source I spoke with.

Besides, people choose anonymity for a reason, and we should respect that. Not everyone is goofy enough like me to put my name out there, and when you do the kooks come out of the woodwork.

If I had to do it over again, I would shoot for anonymity.

And, yes-I'm fully aware Mag came on here and posted a few times, so did a few others, I meant come on here & stay as a regular, without a screen name. Hell, Lime & AC would probably regularly go ballistic on her just because she's got the dreaded "R" after her name.

I know who Intrepid is and it is not Maggie. As historymike has said, it is someone close.

AC lives in Ottawa County. AC more or less does not give a flying fork at a rolling donut what Maggie Thurber happens to say unless it concerns things that would lead to AC's employment in his chosen tech field (info tech, which is nonexistenet in NWOH) or if it pretty much screws up something that would otherwise lead to AC spending his money in Toledo.

Substitute "Czarty Finkbeiner" in for "Maggie Thurber" above and it still stays true.

AC would like to know who AirTrainer is and why AirTrainer only came back after AC started posting again.

AC is currently referring to himself in the third person as he is enjoying his post-IGUN adrenaline and fun high. :)

Let me be the first to acknowledge your resurgance, AC.

Welcome back.

A very interesting post. If Intrepid is very close to the subject of this post as some suggest then it makes total sense as to why Intrepid during my campaign made false statements about the color of my campaign signs in trying to trade off Betty Shultz. Intrepid posted that this "plot" was years in the making. We all know that Ms. Shultz and the subject of this post are very closely tied. Total BS. Considering a certain someone tried to torpedo my endorsement and whose effort was totally repudiated, it is another piece of evidence that Intrepid is very close to the subject of this post. My two cents.

Yes, welcome back, AC. I'm sure your "work" will be much more appreciated this time around.

Do let us know if your itty-bitty feewings get hurt again.

I don't reveal my identity(*), but with a some determined investigation anyone can conclude where I work. So what? If I don't have to reveal who I am, Ms Thurber doesn't have to either. Anonymity of a sorts is very useful tool in practice for engaging in public debate in this manner.

Would we prefer that we "scare off" politicians from posting on websites under assumed names? For one, I'm glad that they can finally reach a lot of people without compromising certain public stances.

* Hell, I've told people which library books I've taken out at certain times. Anyone reading this site who works for the TLCPL could look up that book on their system and find out who I am.

I miss her too Marie but for her sake it sounds like she got an offer she couldn't refuse.

I didn't always agree with her but? Life would be boring if we all agreed.

Welcome back to my favorite FSM'ng buddy AC...
