New version of Toledo Talk

Phone call at my home from a Lucas County Commissioner candidate - I've posted on this site that I do not have a candidate in mind for the co' commissioners' election. I don't have enough information to make a decision but I have been reading and researching.

(I forgot to ask this lady if she was a Dem or a Rep - but I'm sure you all know - so? D or R?).

Shortly after having posted that my son brought me the phone saying that Pam Hume was on the line.

It was actually Pam Haynam and the link she gave me for her positions is above.

I told her that we had recently been discussing these issues and it was on my mind. She said I could ask her some questions.

She said she lives in Sylvania and she's 51 years old. She gave me a run down of her service on the Sylvania School Board. I believe that Sylvania has a good school system.

I asked her why she thought she'd be a good commissioner and she gave me her web address. (Which I jotted down) and then said I'd rather hear it from her.

She said that she wants to limit government and lower taxes. I was ready for that - I said, as we discussed here, that there aren't any county taxes. (Aha - gotcha), but no - she said that there are 14.8m in programs funded by property tax. And that needs to be scaled back. Also that she supports the Zoo's operating levy but not the capital improvement levy. Because that would affect business tax levels at a time when we need to be more enticing to business, not more expensive.

Then she said there was a discretionary fund that she didn't think was appropriate and would work to make that go into the operating funds rather than up to commissioners.

Hmmm....so then I asked her about jobs. She said she's worried that there won't be good jobs for our kids, here locally. (me too)

She talked about an entrepreneurial program in Sylvania schools where the kids actually learn to run a small business.

Anyway - your thoughts?

Ah, entrepreneurial program, like Toledo's? Where we teach the kids how to mow lawns & cut records? (sarcasm) I'll bet the Sylvania program is a wee bit different than Toledo's program. It's probably similar to Junior Achievement, only more indepth I'll bet.

What interesting timing for her to call you after that loooong Konop thread!

Isn't there a county sales tax?

There is a county sales tax...in addition to the state sales tax.

There are county-wide property taxes which only go on the ballot with a majority vote of the county commissioners (general philosophy for years is to okay the ballot issue and let the people decide).

The Sylvania entrepreneurial program, according to Steve Weathers is, linking or working with the new RGP board, which means business driven, I hope, and not government driven.

I thought the same thing!

Maggie - it sounds business driven - and it sounds quite good to me. It'll not answer our immediate problems - but it will get the kids hitting adulthood ready to head up businesses. And this is good. And since they will have local businesses, it might just keep them in the area.

All good stuff.

Ethics is a central campaign issue for Mr. Konop, who has stated that he would not attack fellow Democrats.

Mr. Konop refuted Mr. Wagener's allegations of "cloak-and-dagger" tactics. "Our campaign is doing no polling," Mr. Konop said. "I'm not going to comment on who is doing a poll."

Mr. Konop's campaign aide, Ben Krompak, said yesterday that the United Auto Workers union was paying for a poll and planned to share its results with Mr. Konop today.

Mr. Konop said those statements were not factual, and that Mr. Krompak was not speaking on behalf of the campaign.

And from ToledoTalk.com: My name is Ben Krompak. I work for the Konop campaign and I also serve as a Student Representative on the Dorr Street Development Team of the University of Toledo and the Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commission. posted by BenKrompak at 10:46 A.M. EST on Fri Apr 14, 2006
