'Local GOP Chooses Dave Schulz' - From Politics in Mudville: "Dave is a moderate Republican, a refreshing rarity these days. He does not carry the bible with him as he campaigns and won't scare the dickens out of you as a fear monger. He believes in smaller government which, in fact, would eliminate the seat for which he is running."

"Unlike the dysfunctional Democrats over on Madison Avenue, the local Republican Party chose the best candidate to run for the seat vacated by imprisoned Bob McCloskey. It is to be recalled that this same Madison Avenue group of thugs chose McCloskey in the first place."

"I think that Dave will bring a feistiness to the campaign as he is equal in debate skills to two of his opponents, Bob Vasquez and Joe McNamara. These three will give the voters quite a bit of information and entertainment as the campaign moves along. Lourdes Santiago, on the other hand, is not a good campaigner nor has she anything much to say except the old script written for her by John Irish and Carty Finkbeiner."

From Dave's website at http://www.davidschulz.com Dave wants to:

* Roll back the hidden taxes like fire inspection fees - paid for by reducing the size of city council

* Reduce the business income tax from 2.25% to 1.75% by reducing government expenditures. About $3.8 Million in cuts are needed to make this possible

* Implement a new homeowner income tax credit to encourage our young people to stay and incentivize renters and others to take part in the American dream. Homeownership helps build stable neighborhoods

"[Dave] believes that without good, open, honest government our area will continue to suffer economically. His plans call for:"

* Reducing the size of city council

* Public comment period at council meetings

* More night meetings so more people can attend meetings

* In-district neighborhood council meetings

* Internet broadcasting / archiving of council and committee meetings

* Term limits reform

* Creation of city ethics commission

* Online campaign finance and ethics forms reporting

"His budget and tax plans call for the following:"

* Intense focus on intergovernmental (County-City) purchasing agreements and service and function consolidations to save taxpayers money

* Push for a public-private taskforce to study privitization of city functions to reinvent our government for the 21st century

* Advocate personal income tax reform to make our city more attractive in retention and attraction of residents and businesses

That's really strange. He's listed things he'd have some control over. :-)

That is a breath of fresh air.

"Creation of city ethics commission"

What the hell good will that do? We already have a city ethics commission called the body politic. Each election the people themselves get to toss the unethical bastards out on their ears. Sure, in cases like McCloskey, this system never worked -- it took intervention by the FBI to bring that criminal's political career to a close (perhaps only temporarily, a la Washington DC's Marion Berry {baaarf})

"Intense focus on intergovernmental (County-City) purchasing agreements and service and function consolidations to save taxpayers money"

All he'd need to do is give Mags a call. She's reported here about what the county has been doing about that all on its own.

"Push for a public-private taskforce to study privitization of city functions to reinvent our government for the 21st century"

Careful with that. "Privatization" is a Republican code-word for selling off public assets at fire-sale prices to connected people (donors or cronies). Around Toledo, it IS true that the city has fingers in pies that it never had the moral right to. The Erie Street Market is a fine example of such an extravagence. We need to disconnect properties like the ESM from the control of fops like Carty. Hopefully Schulz is taking aim on those kinds of things when he thinks of "privatization".

All the rest of Schulz's positions indicate a philosophy to open government, reduce it in size somewhat, and make it more accountable. Compared to fellow councilfolks, Schulz walks on water (at least for now) and he can count on my vote.

This Dave dude sounds too good to be true with his platform. I think all politicians who are in office or running for office are nothing but fluff. If this is platform of the local Republican party, then why isn't Sarantou, Ludeman and Shutlz (who are Republicans elected officials) proposing this?

I like his positions a lot. They're radically different than even most of the Republicans in office right now. Most of the people on council are "career politicians," and they've lost touch with reality. It doesn't take very long for any politician to start thinking anything and everything can be solved through government intervention. I think we should have term limits for every elected office.

Dave will be joining us on "The Nookular Option" (88.3FM) around 7AM on Thursday, Sept. 7. Should be a good interview.

We've got a live call-in line for questions at 530-4455.

I'm also intrigued to learn more about the city council candidate who'd eliminate his own seat for the sake of smaller government. That's sticking to principle!!

I'm going to be smarter this time around :-) No same old same old.

Dave is a rare breath of fresh air, in an otherwise stale and stagnant political environment.

He is definitely on my very short list (like first).

Oh, I hope to heaven Dave gets in, and then just uses what ever means possible to expose, expose, expose waste everywhere it is.

But it's gonna be an uphill battle. The powers that be do not want anyone upsetting the apple cart. But with the democrat split, the time might be ripe!

September 14, 2006 Blade story:

"Toledo City Council candidate Dave Schulz yesterday unveiled a 10-point plan he said would lead to more public access to city government."

"Mr. Schulz, the endorsed Republican, called for council to put audio and video recordings of council meetings on the city's Web site. He also called for council to hold more night meetings, allow for a public comment period at council meetings, and for council meetings to be broadcast on cable television more than once."

"Joining Mr. Schulz yesterday was citizen Kate Boyd and former Toledo Board of Education candidate Chris Myers. Mr. Schulz also said Ohio ethics disclosures should be posted on the council Web site, as should all campaign finance reports."

I hope that Dave could post some of his tech ideas on his Web site or here. They got lost in the editing of the news stories. Kate and I were excited with Dave's promise to voters to push City Government to use technology. We were also glad that Dave invited us to salute our efforts with TPS.

Kate and I are going to be starting some things to advocate the use of government, elected officials, and candidates to embrace technology. You all will be hearing about this soon.
