The Blade insults our intelligence.... again - In the latest course of propaganda dished out by The Blade, it's blatantly obvious that they view the residents of NW Ohio as ignorant, gullible half-wits. Spokesman Jeff Heitz states "...an independent survey shows that 96% of local residents feel the area would benefit from more jobs and investment.... and 80% would still patronize a business, even if a union called for a boycott...".
I have but 2 questions: 1) How did the 'other' 4% respond? (now I understand, if not condone, why some countries deny certain citizens the right to breed) and 2) How would the bottom line look if a business lost 20% of it's customers?
Admittedly, I'm no John Maynard Keynes...but, taking a 'wild guess', I'd say that if The Blade would quit trying to sway public sentiment to their side by purchasing such an absurd amount of TV commercial spots, they'd have a better chance at what they've so reduntantly requested..... a fair profit.

Did it really say "an independent survey shows that 96% of local residents feel the area would benefit from more jobs and investment." --???
I mean seriously,,,isn't that like taking an independent survey to see if people think water is wet? Who took this survey - Captain Obvious?
And how much does it pay to gather these surveys? I have a cat here who doesn't have a job. OMG

I used to really admire Jeff, having met him several times in person. He was one of the last of the old-school reporters who just wanted to get a story, and had no desire to tell others how they should think or live. In other words-he wasn't an elitist when he was still working. I've lost a lot of that respect now. Question-how can the rag lock out their workers, claiming "fair profit" is needed...and then pay to keep airing these ads?? And as often as they run, they aren't cheap.

Well, I doubt Keynes would support any union, but I see your point. But still, even those opposing The Blade are still reading it online. I'd check out Glass City Jungle for example. No offense Lisa, but the advertisers won't stop unless there is a complete boycott, and that includes online advertising. Of course, I think The Blade/Union argument is completely ridiculous. Come to terms people. And that means the unions must take a cut to reflect other similar failing regions with poor government and poor business. We are failing as a community, we are losing money, and our businesses are leaving. Our standard of living is low, our inflation is low, and our unemployment is high. Let's wake up and realize that a job is more important than a pay raise at this point.

Junta, our standard of living here in toledo is comprable with any region in this country.... which is the highest standard of living in the world. Low inflation is a GOOD thing..... and our unemployment rate is slightly above the national average, however, it is below many major urban entities.
I blame the lackluster attitude in the Toledo area more on an ineffective and inefficient government -which represents partisan views instead of it's constituency- than on unwavering union ideology. But, thats just my humble opinion.

The phone spammers calling for the Blade to get me to subscribe to the paper are getting more inventive. I've taken a handful of calls over the past month or so, but two in the past week have talked about a little boy.
The first caller said a little boy was starting a paper route in my neighborhood, and the caller wanted to know if I wanted to buy the Sunday Blade for $1.00 a week.
A few days later, a caller said a little boy was expanding his route in my neighborhood, and the caller wanted me to buy the Sunday Blade.
I told the second caller that I have already responded "No" multiple times in recent weeks, and before I could finish my thought, the caller interrupted me and said they would take me off their list, and she hung up.
*69 said the call came from 866-324-4354. Call the number and you get a filled up message box for Northwest Circulation Sales.
Northwest Circulation Sales Inc
5301 Southwyck Boulevard
Ste 209
Toledo, OH 43614
Enter 866-324-4354 at the site whocalled.us, and you will get a message board of others who have been called by that number. The site also displays a map of the calls. Naturally, several people in northwest Ohio have been called.
It will be interesting to see if we're really removed from their list. Our home number is unlisted, so I'm guessing they got our number from the fact that we used to receive the Blade.
Here are a couple comments about Northwest Circulation Sales nuisance calls that may or may not be on behalf of the Blade.
* "I've reported this number a few times, I've called them back and asked to be removed from their list, I've answered and told them to remove our number; and yet they keep calling!!!"
* "I am now on the Do Not Call List now!" https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx Put them on the list and if they continue to call after 31 day after being registered file a complaint."
The whocalled.us website says: "If you're on the national do not call list, you may provide your phone number to report this call as a violation."
Maybe complain to Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro.

It took me forever to stop those calls asking if I wanted the Blade. Thankfully it hasn't started back up again.
Thanks for the links so I'll now know where to formally complain if they start again!

(Sarcasm Alert) The Blade misrepresented poll figures to push their own agenda! OMG they've never done that before.

Katie, *my* cat had his heart set on that job -- and now yours goes and swipes it. Darn.
I called the Blade directly to stop the calls. I'm not sure the do-not-call list applies because it's a local business. Last I heard, they're exempt, as are charities and political campaigns.
My mom got a call about getting the daily Blade. She said no; it's being delivered.
I believe the part of the poll that indicated people will not stop shopping at their favorite stores because of a boycott. Sounds true of the majority.
I'm sick of the Blade ads, but I don't fault Heitz for doing them. He's a hired gun doing a job; it doesn't mean he actually supports the Blade's stance. And even if he does, I don't mind because I think the Blade has a lot of sense on its side in this dispute. Newspaper circulation and ad sales are in the dumper across the country, and the Blade's people are well-paid. People in and out of unions are having to deal with the economic realities of changing marketplaces.
I don't fault the Blade for spending money on the TV ads, either, because it's a business investment. But it's an odd choice. What they're proving is that people see and remember TV ads. It might cause companies to move their ads from the Blade to broadcast.
And speaking of the Blade and money, I was disappointed to see in today's Blade that Maggie wants taxpayers to pay the cost of investigating her role in Coingate. This is not what I expect of a public servant. On second thought, maybe I should, given what we see in politics.
It's stories like that and other information the Blade publishes (that others don't report) that makes me hope the newspaper and its employees settle their differences fast. I don't want the Blade to be sold to out-of-towners, and I don't want to see it fold up shop. Love it or hate it, it does provide us with a lot of information.

From today's Blade story:
Judge Reddin could have sentenced them to up to six months in jail.
Chris Redfern, chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, said the women violated federal campaign finance laws and the move challenging the restitution illustrates their continued arrogance.
"They need to work off their debt to society and be thankful they are not in prison," he said.
Kinda hard to argue with that.

cranky sorry about one upp'ing your cat:-)
I LOVE the site that JR put up. I went through and found 7 numbers - all from Direct Dish Network. All different numbers.
That site is great, great, great. Did anybody look at it? Or don't you get these unknown numbers? And I am ON the do not call list.
So now what do you do, once you've caught them? I've got the numbers, times and date. And obviously can document the do not call registration. Aren't they supposed to get fined or something?

Straight from the FTC Do Not Call website
Who May or May Not Call?
Who is covered by the National Do Not Call Registry?
The National Do Not Call Registry applies to any plan, program, or campaign to sell goods or services through interstate phone calls. This includes telemarketers who solicit consumers, often on behalf of third party sellers. It also includes sellers who provide, offer to provide, or arrange to provide goods or services to consumers in exchange for payment.
The National Do Not Call Registry does not limit calls by political organizations, charities, or telephone surveyors.
For more information, please see FTC INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTS below.
What about an established business relationship?
A telemarketer or seller may call a consumer with whom it has an established business relationship for up to 18 months after the consumer's last purchase, delivery, or payment - even if the consumer's number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. In addition, a company may call a consumer for up to three months after the consumer makes an inquiry or submits an application to the company. And if a consumer has given a company written permission, the company may call even if the consumer's number is on the National Do Not Call Registry.
One caveat: if a consumer asks a company not to call, the company may not call, even if there is an established business relationship. Indeed, a company may not call a consumer - regardless of whether the consumer's number is on the registry - if the consumer has asked to be put on the company's own do not call list.
For more information, please see FTC INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTS below.
