Council hopeful comes out against trash policy - I know we've all discussed this stupid policy but city council hopeful and fellow toledotalker Dave Schulz is the first candidate I've seen to openly criticize this policy in the media.
I think Toledo could do better with a councilman who will speak out against new trash fines, bikepaths, and twinkle lights when we are in dire need of more police officers.
Maybe if Dave gets on Toledo city council he'll explain to us what those hidden fees actually pay for or do away with them all together.

IMO Dave will not be elected to council. It will either be McNamara or Santiago because they've made effort to show themselves through the many community events and media which I've experienced on hand. How come the local Republican party or the elected Sarantou, Ludeman or Birmingham endorse/support him publicly? Or even Maggie Thurber endorse/support him? I don't see Dave anywhere except for his campaign signs or website which doesn't help a whole lot.

This is the first politico I've heard verbalize a statement about this trash stupidity also.
'Bout time....

made effort to show themselves through the many community events and media Holy the link is to a WTOL story. so obviously Dave is showing an effort to show himself through the media. By saying only Santiago and McNamara are the only ones out there doing it is proven wrong by my original post.
BTW~ The story was also on WUPW but I didn't post it as it has less of an audience and I couldn't find the link.

Holy I think what you're talking about with Schulz having a lack of T.V. visibility comes from him not advertising on t.v. Dave decided to make this campaign a mainly grass roots effort and has only campaigned through radio ads, literature mailings, and insuring his press releases make it to the local blogs.
Being that he is a Republican in a heavily Democratic area he is probably banking on a split Democrat ticket and trying to wrap up the Republican and movtivated Independant bases. Not a bad political strategy for an at-large off year election.

Not a bad political strategy
Good observation!

It's hard to say if that strategy will work here in Toledo. The only issues that I have heard Dave speak about were issues. He held a press conference downtown about open government. I like that.
I have not heard him do any opponent bashing and I haven't seen any nasty ads - although the tv has not been on much here and not on local tv hardly at all.
Those are the things that I liked about this candidate. I'm really tired of hearing campaigns where the candidates can't get an entire sentence out without mentioning their opponent.

In fairness to the other City Council campaigns, others have commented on the trash collection issue.
Joe had a press release back on October 24th:

Lourdes was on tv and was in the Blade:

Bob Vasquez has made public comments as well from what I have heard from others who have talked to him recently.
I think this is one area where all of the candidates disagree in one form or another with the Mayor. Dave's creative use of the trash bag and getting on tv was of course a smart campaign move, but I don't think in this instance he was the "first". Best use of props? Yes.

Yes - best use of props for sure. Do you happen to know what happened with the council vote on this? I'm far, far behind getting the council audio posted to my site.

Setting trash cans out too early is not as derelict as leaving them by the street for 3 days after they've been emptied.

Yeah, Flinty, I hear ya. I tend to retrieve the cans of my neighbors' after collection, just so we don't make it too obvious that people might not be home. The last thing I want is to attract the B&E crowd to our neighborhood. I feel so strongly about that, that I collect the cans of up to 5 homes other than my own.
