Tobacco money for budget deficts - The continued hypocrisy by the government over smoking. "States use tobacco settlement to cover budget ills. Ohio takes $280M to trim shortfall. [States] are using most of their funds from the 1998 tobacco settlement to reduce budget shortfalls rather than for smoking prevention programs or to pay for health care. Michigan earmarked 42 percent or $165.9 million of its $388.3 million in fiscal 2003 tobacco funds for its budget shortfall." Yet, Gov. Granholm wants to raise the Michigan cigarette tax from the current $1.25 to $2 per pack. The tax, so they say, is also viewed as a means to get more people to quit smoking. Government's concern for the public's health. Yeah right.
