Senate defeats same-sex marriage amendment - "The U.S. Senate voted against moving on a proposed constitutional amendment that would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. The final vote on the proposal to vote on the amendment was 48-50 — far from the two-thirds majority needed to continue debate. The Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 currently doesn't bar states from legalizing gay marriages within their borders, but they're not obligated to recognize gay marriages performed in other states." I find it absurd that our politicians would consider amending the Constitution so that it bans gay marriages. I don't understand why so many people oppose gay marriage.

Oh yeah, Kerry and Edwards skipped the vote. Gay marriage must not be an important enough issue for them. Or maybe they're too spineless to take a stand. Or maybe they're taking orders from Bill Clinton.
"Bill Clinton has warned Senator John Kerry to counter Republican efforts to turn this year's election into a debate on gay marriage and other "cultural issues" such as gun control and abortion. In an interview with the Financial Times, the former US president urged Senator Kerry to fight a values-based campaign focused on health, education and crime."
Health? Support for gay marriage would allow for health insurance benefits for both partners, wouldn't it?
Crime? I think that's the first time this year I've heard "crime" brought up as an issue. I'll vote for more walls, more bars, and more guards and stiffer sentences.
Sidenote: Bill is on a book tour in Europe.
"Mr Clinton strongly endorsed Tony Blair's position on disarming Iraq, blaming France and Germany for leaving the British prime minister isolated in his efforts to secure a second United Nations resolution."

Kerry's been skipping a lot of votes. There's no doubt in my mind that this one especially was skipped since it's such a controversial issue. When given the chance to make a stand on an issue, Kerry avoids. Edwards probably was just following the boss's lead.
Read up on McCain's statement about the vote. He's one of the few strong Republicans that I can respect.
