Marina and arena projects, here we go again - If you are experiencing deja vu, there's good reason. Yesterday, Mayor Ford announced a developer for the Marina District project. A new sports arena is not included, but the Mayor is suppose to make a major announcement about the arena soon. You've got to be kidding. This is almost identical to what happened in the fall of 2003. On October 30, 2003, Mayor Ford announced the developer for the Marina District project. Plans about the sports arena were to be announced by the end of December of 2003, but that never happened. So now a year later, it's the same old thing. And we're suppose to jump up and celebrate? In the software industry, this is called "vaporware." Oh, I'm sure we'll see an artist's beautiful rendition of what the marina and arena will look like when the projects are completed. Starting to sound like a joke. "How many artists does it take to draw ..."

The marina project will become a reality when two things happen:
1. A developer gives the appropriate bribe to Bob McCloskey.
2. The Gladieux family is taken care of. What I mean by this is that either the Gladieux family owns the new area (with taxpayer money used to build it) or the Gladieux family is given a handsome pay off (from the taxpayers to Toledo) for the current arena (i.e. at least $5 million).

The question I would have to ask is why is the city spending all this taxpayer money on redevelopment projects when it is in the middle of a budget crisis? It would be like a person who has their income reduced, through lost overtime or whatever, going out and buying a new car and then trying to figure out how to pay the utility bills later.

That old saying, "Action talks, bullshit walks." Toledo government is kingmaster of the bullshit. All this talk over the years about a new sports arena and the marina project with its businesses and fancy residences has put us all to yawn. It's all bullshit.
You want action? Try Perrysburg's Levis Commons. That actually exists. You can visit it now. And it's an ongoing development, including private residences. Maumee's version is suppose to open in a year or two.

Perrysburg and Maumee are completely different worlds than Toledo. Just because something worked on Mars doesn’t mean it will work on Pluto. The reason economic development doesn’t work in Toledo is because Toledo taxes are too high and city services are too poor. When was the last time you had to wait 4 hours for the police to show up in Maumee? If you wanted to build your business in Toledo, be prepared to wait 6 months for a building permit. The city may or may not develop the marina district, but to me it smells of Portside, the Erie street market, and the LaSalle apartments, projects the taxpayers funded, and were left holding the bag after they failed (paying more to bail it out).

Another reason why economic development does not work in TOledo is because you have to bribe a politician to get anything done in Toledo.

Sorry, Charlies, the real reason why "economic development does not work in Toledo" is that there IS NO economy in Toledo. Ohio is getting in much the same boat, what with about 4 to 8 percent of the tax revenue being collected from business income. Yes, that's right folks, over 90 PERCENT of Ohio's income taxes have to be paid by YOU. Now, get back to work you pukes; you have to work even more overtime this week to make up for Jeep's tax abatement ... as well as all the other tax abatements that your so-called leaders handed out like candy to the newest welfare queens on the block: American Corporations.

Giving tax money to big business is what Republicans are all about! They say that if government can just sipher a little more of your tax dollars to Daimler(Heil Hitler)Chrysler, then magically the more wealthy company will offer jobs to everyone and their progeny. Well, we gave them our tax money. But where are those jobs?
Bush is repackaging the old Reagan philosophy of "trickle-down economics." That works like this... give big businesses and wealthy Americans a whole bunch of tax dollars, and then they will hire a whole bunch of new workers. Unfortunately, here's what happened... those big businesses gave the tax dollars to shareholders (more wealthy Americans), kept a lot of it themselves (see stock options) and sent a lot of it off-shore. And those wealthy people who were supposed to hire a lot of poor Americans... well, they kept it for themselves instead. During Reagan's administration we saw unprecendented movement of wealth to the richest segment of our society. Bush is doing the same now.
Republicans serve rich Americans and big businesses. They could care less about poor and working class Americans (who, if they voted would have radically changed the elections in 2004 and 2000). Now, Bush wants to take apart Social Security (invented by Democrats) to steer money into the financial services market (see campaign contributors).
Bush invaded Iraq and now American oil and industry infrastructure companies (i.e. Halliburton) are more rich. Now Bush is preventing Americans from purchasing less expensive drugs from Canada (see Pharmaceutical campaign contributors). His argument that Canadian drugs are unsafe is incredibly silly. I mean, are thousands of Canadians dropping dead because of those "unsafe" drugs (which are made in the US and packaged along with the same drugs we buy here for more money)? Hmmm.....
Bush has now lifted environmental laws so that timber companies and developers and destroy pristine wilderness (so we can go there and pollute it some more). Why is he doing this? Oh, yeah. I forgot. It was those timber company executives and the developers who stuffed Bush's campaign with cash.
So, let's see... Bush has helped the automotive industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the oil and infrastructure industries, timber executives and developers and now with Social Security destruction, he will help investment and brokerage houses. In each case, nobody asked American taxpayers if it was OK to use our hard-earned cash to make big companies more wealthy. But, it seems that a majority of the voting public want Bush to continue to take our tax money and give it to his big campaign contributors.
And please don't retort by saying that Clinton did this or that. If he did, then he was wrong. And it would not make it OK for Bush to do it now. Bush thinks he has a "mandate" from the people now to do anything he wants. That will likely result in another military campaign, this time in Iran, along with continued rising health care costs, rising oil costs, dependence upon foreign oil, dismantling of your retirement fund, mixing religion with public schools, destruction of our precious environment, deterioration of foreign relations and dangerous diplomacy and very likely (in 2-3 years) resumption of a military draft. Oh, and by the way, our real enemy (Osama bin Laden) is still out there laughing at us because Bush can't find him. What a miracle it is that the world's foremost power cannot find and bring to justice one person with a million dollar bounty on his head. Could it be that the vast majority of people in the world now dislike Americans, since we invaded and now occupy a foreign land? Could it be they hate us because Bush acts like a cowboy and has no talent at all with diplomacy. Because of Bush, America is viewed by the world commuinity as an arrogant bully. We go where we want and we take whatever we want. We have the arrogance to tell other countries to have our form of democracy. Who are we to tell other countries how to live? How do we even know that those people prefer that form of government? Who apppointed the US as leader of the world? Nonetheless, Bush has appointed himself king of the world. Now, we occupy Iraq, Soon, we will occupy Iran. After we occupy Iran, who's next?

What are you doing Chaz, posting the left-wing talking points memo in every topic no matter if it makes no sense to the original topic?
In summary, the reason why Toledo didn't build a new sports arena back 1997 or so was due to:
1. In 2003: "Bush invaded Iraq and now American oil and industry infrastructure companies (i.e. Halliburton) are more rich."
2. "Now Bush is preventing Americans from purchasing less expensive drugs from Canada."
3. "Bush has now lifted environmental laws so that timber companies and developers and destroy pristine wilderness."
4. "So, let's see... Bush has helped the automotive industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the oil and infrastructure industries, timber executives and developers and now with Social Security destruction, he will help investment and brokerage houses."
Bush took office in 2001, but the above are the reasons why no sports arena was built in Toledo in the 1990's.
And the reason why the Marina District project has been stalled for several years is because:
"Bush has appointed himself king of the world."

Oh, sorry. I was spouting in the wrong place. The marina thing, well Gladioux wants the receipts, plus concessions and parking. I've heard of having your cake and eating it too, well, this is having the whole damn meal and what exactly does "partner" mean? And the marina, well, nobody seems willing to pay for it and the developers all want $ up front. Besides, in a housing market barely able to keep it's own place... exactly who is going to spend a lot of money for those riverfront condos? As Perrysburg's mayor would say, no spendieeee, no buildeeeee.
