The New Prohibition - Has M.A.D.D. gone MAD?? Read the quotes below, and you be the judge.
"I believe that most people would not mind the slight inconvenience of being arrested for a low blood-alcohol level, given the opportunity to prove their innocence"
-Linda Campion, MADD presenter and founder of the Kathleen A. Campion Foundation
"M.A.D.D. has become basically a Neo-Prohibitionist organization. My intention was to remove drunk drivers from the road, not drivers who have been drinking."
-Candace Lightner, who founded M.A.D.D. after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver. Mrs. Lightner left M.A.D.D. several years ago, due to the philisophical direction the organization was taking.

Yes, I agree that MADD has become neo-temperance or neo-prohibitionist.
While I haven't touched a drop of alcohol for years, I would be highly pissed off about being arrested for "the opportunity to prove my innocence."
The reason is that field BAC testing devices have proven to be unreliable, since so many factors can affect results. Mouthwash - or medicines containing alcohol - can give false positives, and BAC levels can be skewed by the amount of breath going into and out of the lungs. This is why defense attorneys tell clients to decline the field test.
A study by Simpson, "Accuracy and Precision of Breath-Alcohol Measurements for a Random Subject in the Postabsorptive State," 33 (2) "Clinical Chemistry" 261 (1987), determined that breath readings are at least 15% inaccurate compared to blood testing, and at least 23% of people will have a higher breath-alcohol reading than blood-alcohol reading.
In another study, by the toxicology section of Wisconsin's State Laboratory of Hygiene, only 33% of breath tests were the same as the blood tests. [32 (4) Journal of Forensic Sciences 1235 (1987).]
FYI.
And no, I have never had a DUI, DWI, or any other nasty ticket. I am just a person who seeks truth and justice.

So, are we talking about:
1. Mothers Against Drunk Driving
-or-
2. Mothers Against Destructive Decisions?
Recently, I've found that we've been solicited by both referring themselves as "MADD" or "M.A.D.D."
Needless to say I now have a special container for both solicitors mailings.
