Pawn Posting Shut Down - Why did you shut down the Pawn/Rossford Schools posting? It continued to draw a lot of interest. The idea of bringing a religious-oriented presentation into a public school during school hours is still a controversial and interesting topic. Exploring legal connections to a wide range of individual beliefs is important to this site. Why not bring it back?

Comments ...

Technically, my app automatically closed commenting on the Pawn topic due to the topic's age. I didn't do it intentionally. My config file contains a setting called:

max_topic_age = 60

60 being the number of days to allow commenting on a front page post. The Pawn topic was started on Dec 15, so I guess Feb 13 was the 60th day. Something like that.

Now there is a flag in the database for each topic where I can override the max_topic_age setting. I can enable the "keepopen" flag in the database for the Pawn topic so commenting can continue. That's what I did for the goofy Coyote Alert topic, which was started almost two years ago but continues to allow commenting.

In fact, a new comment was posted to the Coyote Alert topic on Feb 2. Someone reported a coyote attack on a cat, which is why the Coyote Threat Level has been raised from medium (brown) to high (black). So be alert, people.

Anyway, I can enable commenting again on the Pawn topic if that's the general consensus. Or we can just wait until there's some real news and then start a new thread. Or people can continue the Pawn-Rossford discussion in this thread.

The original thread contains over 100 comments, some of them lengthy, and the webpage is a bit of a hog. Maybe a new thread would be better. But it doesn't matter to me. Whatever makes sense.

I'm sure someone is thinking, "Why close commenting on topics." I'm sure there's a good reason, but I can't think of any right now.

Thanks for the explanation. Let's see if there are any additional comments. Perhaps it has run out of steam.

No, I don't think it's run out of steam. Just took a break, maybe.

Hey, Chaz, I just now did a check at news.google.com and there's news. Until now, there hasn't been any news about Pawn-Rossford since late-January.

Looks like the Blade had the by story mid-afternoon on Thursday, Feb 17. The Blade added it to their website with the * New * flag. Should be in Friday's paper.

"Four of the [Pawn] band’s members sued the district today, filing a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Rossford Exempted Village School District and Superintendent Luci Gernot."

"The band members claim they were discriminated against for religious purposes even though they planned to play a show with a secular theme at a Dec. 21 anti-drug assembly during school hours. They are asking Judge David A. Katz to rule that they should have been allowed to play the concert."

Well, there you go. Steam exists. And it looks like the story hit the AP wire later in the evening.

Fox News (AP) story.

"School officials declined to comment Thursday on the suit by the band, which is represented by The Rutherford Institute, a Charlottesville, Va., center that deals with church-state issues."

"Band members said in the lawsuit that they did not intend to play any songs at the assembly that referred to religion and had agreed to stick to the anti-drug message."

"Kyle Kleeberger, a Rossford senior and a member of the band, said after his group was banned that he hoped "we can get more publicity to take Jesus Christ to more levels and follow whatever his plan is." "

Even the Guardian has it.

"Maybe a new thread would be better."

Chaz, I decided to go with this option since your post for this topic was about commenting being shutdown on an old thread, and that may be a little confusing for someone looking for info about Pawn suing Rossford.

It no longer is relevant, in view if a newer post on more recent developments.
