Can you rent home video equip? - Like a lot of people, I dont see enough need in my life to own an expensive camcorder. I know so many people who invest umpteen hundred dollars in one only to have it sit on the top shelf in the closet and collect dust while it becomes outdated and obsolete.
Is there anywhere that'd rent you one for those special occasions you do have? Mabye that you could take with you on vacation, or am I dreaming?
I know I can get an old VHS one on Ebay for next to nothing, and I do still have a VCR that could play it, but the same logic applies - Cheap or expensive, for the most part, it'd live on my closet shelf.

You should stop by Best Buy or another electronics store sometime and check out the new camcorders. You can spend upwards of $1000 if you want, but there are numerous options out there between $100-300. They won't have all the frills of the expensive guys, but they'll get the job done. I would bet renting video equipment more than 2 or 3 times would cost about the same as paying for it.

According to the Rent a center website you can rent cam corders there, short term or rent to own. It didn't list prices and I'm guessing they aren't cheap but for a week or two its got to be cheaper then buying one.
I was thinking about renting one myself later this year when my kids and I go to Disney.

I've done the rent a center thing. I think it was $30 for a weekend (this was three years ago though). I would reccomend their Sony DV cam, if they still have it. It's better then the others they offered. Easy to hook up to computer or VHS.

Please don't do any Rent-To-Owns. That's one of the biggest scams there is.
"We'll let you pay us $800 over the next year and a half for this camcorder you could buy at Wal-Mart for $400!"

Yes, heyhey, rent to own is a scam. I do like the idea of the $30/weekend thing tho...
thanks!

Oh I'd never actually rent to own anything from those stores because its crazy how you end up paying double for it.
I have a friend who uses rent a center all the time, they make much more money then I do and could easily buy things other places. She said they like it because while they are paying for it the rental place is responsible for all service it might need.
Sure thats a nice perk but I don't see how even that makes something worth paying double for it.

Your forgetting that there were people out there that can not afford to pay cash for living room/bedroom/dining room sets ect. I am one. Yes I know that I am paying more than what I would pay if I had the cash up front. But unfortunately I don't have the credit, I can't pay cash. So paying a small price every 2 wks helps my budget.
If you do plan to use rent-a-center, care to use my name? As I would be happy to use the refer a friend and get a week free. :-) Just let me know.

I understand that Toledolatina but wouldn't it work just as well to take that money you'd be paying to the rental place and save it till you have enough to pay cash for it?

TL,
I don't mean to be offensive, but that's a very short-sighted viewpoint of money. This is a form of debt, and the wrong types of debt lock us into our current situation with no hope of financial improvement. Instead of paying $50 a week for 30 weeks for a new sofa and chair (a total of $1500), save $50 a week for 20 weeks (for a total of $1000) and buy a sofa and chair of your choice from a legit store.
You may have to wait 4 months before you get it, but you've saved $500. With that $500 you could either get a nicer sofa or you could put it towards other debt.
I don't know the exact numbers that your RTO uses, but I do know they have unbelievable interest rates. RTOs prey on those who can't delay gratification. Honestly, you don't need that new couch and sofa now, so what harm is it to wait 4 months? To me, that $500 savings would make it very worth-while.
