New version of Toledo Talk

Mapping Lucas County's registered sex offenders - Speaking of Google Maps, I checked out a fascinating site last week called, which uses the Google Maps APIs. I wanted to play around with the apis, so I used the Aug 15 data file of registered sex offenders from the Lucas County sheriff's website.

Comments ...

I checked it out in IE because it doesn't seem to work in Firefox. At least it didn't for me. I really like Google Maps when used locally. Any chance of adding these map features to Toledo Talk?

jr - thank you! I wish Toledo was this progressive! The Chicago site should serve as a model for Toledo Police. Time will tell.

The Google map option is awesome! Thanks again!

And rick - I got it working in Firefox. Maybe your pop-up blocker is holding it back.

As far as sex offenders go, Maumee is home to the scariest sex offender by far: Brian Peppers.

From the Google Maps API documentation:

"Google Maps is not compatible with every web browser. Google Maps currently supports recent versions of Firefox/Mozilla, IE 5.5+, Safari 1.2+, and sort of supports Opera. IE 5.0 is not supported."

But you got the gas map working. Did work? Is it only that doesn't work?

A computer programmer took the data the Chicago police releases to the public, and he combined it with Google Maps. The programmer actually now works for the Washington Post after hacking at the Lawrence Journal-World.

I'm running Fireofox 1.0.6 and the map for sex offenders doesn't show up. I don't see a pop-up blocker notice so I'm not sure what the issue might be.

Yeah.. I'm having the same problems with the GoogleMap API in Firefox... this site is the only one so far that won't let the google Map load in Firefox, so I'm guessing its the coding, not FF...

I read the list of registered sex offenders in Lucas County, it was enormous, I was disturbed to learn how many resided within a 3 mile radius of my home!

The sex offender maps now work in Firefox. It was a dumb mistake. I had a JavaScript variable name called "long" for longitude. The problem is the word "long" is a type of integer. The JavaScript in Firefox correctly flagged the variable name as an error and ceased processing. Thanks for the heads up.

Also available now are the Google maps for Toledo area WiFi hotspots based upon data from More area hotspots need to be added.
