No more free coffee for prisoners - It's inhumane. Could cause mass-rioting. "Free coffee soon will be off the menu in Michigan's prisons. In an effort to save $250,000 this year, inmates in state prisons and people in boot camps and correctional centers won't be able to get free coffee after March first. Inmates still will be able to buy instant coffee at prison stores. The head of prison advocacy group in Michigan says eliminating free coffee in state prisons shows that state officials are looking at the wrong places to reduce spending."

$250,000.00 is but a drop in the bucket of what the Michigan corrections system spends. I would have to wonder if that slight saving doesn’t actually increase costs as the corrections system has to deal with a bunch of crabby inmates. If the Michigan corrections system really wants to save some money, how about just releasing some of the non-violent drug offenders.

"Sheriff's ban on smoking affects Wood Co. inmates."

It's tough being an inmate these days.

go figure you kill, rob or steal and then your freedom to drink coffee is taken. What is this world coming to? I mean there's nothing like a ciggarette and a cup of coffee to reminise about cutting someones head off or robbing a bank.

Criminals should get coffee just like everybody else who isn't a criminal, what did they do to deserve this other than committ crimes, and they should get to have their freedom too while were at it.

Boo Hoo
Are we being a bit cynical?

Yeah, we better watch it. We might hurt someone's feelings.

Hey I want free coffee from the government, I didn't even committ a crime either and I pay taxes.

Seems odd to me to pick on one beverage to deny prisoners. What about milk? OJ? Iced-Tea? While we're at it, how about their meals? No more chicken or roast beef in the cafeteria, just spam, tunafish, and bologna. Heck, why not just take it down to the bare minimum: bread, water, and a vegetable here and there? After all, it is ALL free from the government.

....do you see where I'm going with this argument? I sure don't get any of this stuff for free, and the prison is not a club med, but at least provide the inmates with a square meal. We're not talking about taking away Prime Rib Friday, HBO, or something excessive here... it's coffee! It just seems so trivial...

Take it away, a prisoner will probably get addicted to coffee, claim it's the governments fault, and make milloions suing. Oh by the way coffee does have caffine in it and caffine is actually bad for you, believe it or not.

All this "free" coffee the state wants to take away is actually 1/2 cup of lousy instant syrup type coffee with water added to it and it is ONLY served at breakfast. Most of the inmates don't even drink it. How the state expects to save $250,000 by doing this is beyond me. Another way to dupe the public into thinking the are doing a terrific job.

Oh, by the way, do you know the State of Michigan actually expends a whole $2.50 per day to feed each inmate. What would your meals be like if they only cost $2.50 PER DAY.

It is not the taking it away that bugs me. It is the big deal they are making about doing it so as to look so grand in the eye of the public that makes me angry.

It might be 2.50 a meal but they save because I'm sure they buy in bulk

Hey JR who makes the coffee that they give at prisons what company?

If your meals were bought and arranged in bulk, $2.50/day is not bad. I have figured out that by selectively shopping at places like Sam's and Kroger's, you as an individual can prepare a good cooked dinner for about $1.00 for materials (energy cost is negligible, and your own labor cost is free). Prisoners are in no danger of starvation ... considering those who indulge in weight-lifting while imprisoned, we can clearly see that this is true.

Prisoners have had their liberties taken away. The least we can do is feed them properly while in prison. Coffee, however, is not required for metabolism. It appears that instant coffee is available for purchase (although I'd probably be critical of the prices), and I can't imagine that prisoner-owned coffee-makers can't be setup in common areas in a prison. Since prisoner management of common areas would fall under the mandate of "responsibility under rehabilitation", I encourage this.

The real kicker here is that you said bootcamps are giving up on coffee. That one bothers me.
