Stranahan Arboretum has new focus - Hello all,
The Blade has a good article about the new director of the arboretum - Dr. Daryl Moorehead. He is going to spearhead ecological research at the place...focusing on native plants. One of the goals is to get people in the area to rethink landscaping, greater emphasis on native plants and trees rather than what looks pretty or what fits in with the rest of the neighborhood. I think I'm going to set aside a small patch in the back 40, not mow it and see what comes up. Many native seeds can lie dormant for many years, and given an opportunity, will sprout. Only concern..it may look like a weed patch and attract critters.
But I am going to give it a try...just out of curiousity.
Small world...I took two biology classes from
Dr. Moorehead when I was living in Lubbock, (West) Texas. Great instructor..made ecolgoy relevant. Whenever my husband and I went camping, esp in Colorado, I couldn't help but think in ecological terms. Was working in the library there, so going to class was easy. I moved back to Toledo about 9 years ago, and he accepted a position at UT a few years later.
Small world.
And next Monday, a chemistry professor from Texas Tech (same university) will be giving a talk about issues of perchlorate in drinking water. He was a colleague of my former husband's.
Again, small world.
Just felt like babbling this morning..
taking a break from doing background work
for an unrelated book review....

Good info - I'll watch for the follow up. Had to get my dictionary out :-) perchlorate.
The word for the day!

Great project - & Sandy Stutzenstein is a great resource there.
UT Biology lost a great one in soil biology when Deborah Neher went to U.Vermont to join other great ones.
I'm gearing up to do Manhattan Marsh restoration with MetroParks.
Tonight at 6:30pm, Dr. Don Pribor of UT Biology, is talking about creative REFORM of higher education @ DownTown Latte', the hub of creative networking in Toledo, on South St.Clair across the block from Spaghetti Warehouse.
