Hecklinger Pond Clean Up (East Toledo) - After hearing and driving by the pond, (located on Seaman Road) how they are draining the pond and killing the contaminated fish to clean it up and refill and stock the pond. My children wanted to help with the clean up. So here I come, 8:15 this morning with my 3 kids, 2 neices and one friend of my sons. There were 2 guys talking and I asked them who was in charge of the clean up. One guy walked up to his car and handed me gloves and bags. Said we were to clean up the dead fish. He was from Water rec, he leaves and another guy from BP comes with more gloves and bags. It's about 9am and a teenage boy and his grandfather show up. No one in charge of the clean up shows up. The grandfather stated he was told there would be about a hundred volunteers. There were only a total of 9. These 9 volunteers pulled out about 1000 or so fish from this pond and there are more left(unreachable). The smell is horrible. I am just so displeased that there wasn't more of an organiztion of this clean up. There wasn't even portapottys for use. Then to top it all off. After several hours of clean up, I notice down the road a sign posted that warned of aquatic pesticide used and no one is to come in contact with the water from 7/20 to 8/9. Oh great, my kids have been in the water picking up these fish. Only a few inches in the water and hands(even with the gloves) all wet. I called the city when we left and someone called me back with in 10mins. She did ease my mind and said the posion is only harmful to fish. Wildlife and humans will be ok. I'll keep that in mind but if any of the kids get sick, we'll be at the hospital.
Well anyways check out 13abc news at 6 and 11 and you can see the hard work the kids did today.

If I'd heard the words "contaminated fish", I wouldn't have let my kids touch them, gloves or not. I know you were trying to do a good thing, but I hope your kids don't get sick from it. Just because they said it's not harmful to humans - I wouldn't bet on it. Didn't they say don't eat the fish? That'd be a tip off to me.

I wish they would have posted on here that volunteers were needed. I would have lent a hand.
