DIRECT BUY A GOOD DEAL FOR HOME RENOVATIONS / IMPROVEMENTS? - A user wants to know:

Anyone have any dealings with Direct Buy...the company that advertises on t.v. every weekend? They offer products/services for home improvement at manufacturer prices. Anyone know what it costs to join? Is it worth it?

Might be helpful...It sounds like the membership is close to $5,000 for two years.

DirectBuy, or UCC Total Home, it's former name, sounds like a giant scam to me. ~$5,000 upfront and they won't let you think it over at home after the presentation. Either sign up then or you aren't welcome back is what several people reported according to the reviews above. Other reviews say the goods are poor quality and/or not much below retail. Oh, and anything they promise you in the presentation is nullified by the contract, which states "No oral promises or statements not contained in this membership agreement are binding."

If you're looking to remodel on the cheap, try the Big Ugly Warehouse. There's a local location, they've got low prices, and you can inspect their stock before buying, unlike DirectBuy. I've only heard of one person having a problem with them, and it was because the snap together flooring they bought was from two separate production runs and the color was noticeably different. Other than that, they're pretty cheap and unlike DirectBuy, you can inspect the goods before you buy.

Let me give a shout-out to Toledo Plywood on Westwood (south Douglas).

Best prices I found by a large margin, especially on trim and moldings. Plus they have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that you can find in seconds rather that searching for hours in the Big Box home improvement stores.

Chris - when using a new business for any major purchase I always start at the consumer credit bureau :-) The one FOR consumers about businesses.

This outfit had 88 hits, which is a rather considerable amount.

katie82640, Thank you for the public service. Wow. Who knows how many people you saved from a serious financial loss.

Any time a deal is so good that you have to decide right this minute without thinking about it or lose it, its not a deal that is going to be in your favor. If they have a solid good deal for you they will want you to compare it to what others offer,or tell you to price shop.
