New version of Toledo Talk

    June 7, 2005

Carty Must be Rolling Over in His Grave. - Carty must be rolling over in his grave with this talk of regionalism. Oh yes, I know he's not completely gone yet and with the horrible job that Jack has done, Carty might be back again. Carty was the man who slapped at neighboring cities blaming them for the woes of his beloved city. He slapped Perrysburg, Sylvania, Oregon and all of southeastern Michigan. Didn't he blame realtors for the steering people away from buying within the city limits? Which would be illegal, even if true and there was no evidence presented to suggest it was. Jack's track record for "offing" groups is no better. Ask anyone who owns a moderate to small size construction company. Jack's passion for the black community has alienated many small businessmen, who were already diversity-oriented.

Where some cities have seen the value of collaboration, Carty saw something else, only God knows what. Jack just appears to be overwhelmed with what needs to occur within the city limits, let alone within a region. When the word "region" is used, it usually means cities within a specified 100 mile radius. Oh-oh! Detroit is just 66 miles away. Wasn't it Detroit that Carty slapped so loudly before the end of his tenure. I'm not suggesting that Jack would do any better. He has had the opportunity and shows little capacity for creating, let alone implementing a more dynamic vision. Maybe the message here is it's time for a new face with greater capacity and a more dynamic vision. Toledoans need to start looking now, if they want turn-away from the from the current iceberg.

Maybe we don't just need a new face, but a new philosophy, as well. Carty, Ford, A-Team, B-Team...Even the Republicans on city council ...they may not all agree on the acts but they still share the same philosophy: Government is the solution to all the problems and government can do things better than individuals or the free market.

Look at the fiasco over the "merger" of city/county economic development departments and compare that to the highly successful fundraising effort for the Regional Growth Partnership - over $7.5 million committed in less than 6 months. The business community is speaking loudly and clearly with their dollars...are there any politicians willing to listen?

BINGO!! It's called creeping socialism. And it's unfortunately, prevalent nationwide. There's no one left to vote for, IMO.

Regardless of what Toledo needs, Toledo will more than likely elect another democrat.

Just more of the same old, same old...

And yet, they WILL expect a different result.

Does anyone else remember that the City of Toledo got more constructive things done when it had a PROFESSIONAL City Manager carrying out the politico’s direction/wishes.

City Manager:
An individual bred, taught, and trained to professionally manage the affairs of city government.

Strong Mayor:
A BAD idea, as Toledo surely must know by now... (A strong mayor much resembles a three day old fish...)

Only by returning to the City Manager form of government will Toledo regain the much needed Professionalism that has been so sorely lacking for the last three mayoral terms... And, a City Manager knows how to keep things moving and get things done, often despite the politics.

I could tolerate Carty for another term, IF we had a City Manager to "buffer" his exuberance (for lack of a more “descriptive” term).

Sad but true. However the Soviet Union didn’t last forever and the current socialist programs in this country won’t last forever either. Just look at the current fiscal situation that socialist security finds itself in.

You are "right on" intrepid. As a private entity, the Regional Growth Partnership no longer has to play politics with anyone. But, they will have some political support: Marge Brown, Mayor of Oregon: Tom Brown, Mayor of Port Clinton; Craig Stough, Mayor of Sylvania. Even Carty began singing the praises of the Lake Erie West concept as his term in office wound down.
