Positive news as far as Unemployment numbers for NWO - In the figures just released by ODJAF, our area has continued to show improved numbers since January and compared to February of last year. With the exception of Fulton County which made a .1% increase since January 06.

When you take into account how the rate is calculated... that could certainly indicate that a lot of people around here have either left or stopped looking for a job, and therefore aren't counted as "unemployed".

My daughter applied to Movie Gallary, had 2 interviews, passed their 'test' (math, etc.,her honors student girlfriend failed the test). Still did not get hired. She isn't weird,no tattoos, etc. A pretty girl. Why some of these low level jobs have such high standards, is beyond me, this is stock and cash register. I know a couple of people who have nearly given up finding a job here.

starling, you're preaching to the choir.

And some (actually a LOT) of these jobs DON'T want anyone with a brain, because "they'll just be out of here in two weeks when they find a better job".

I so do not want to go into the job search rant, because if you think I've been liberal with the flaming in other threads, I'll be swearing so hard that sailors will blush in this one.

Starling: "Why some of these low level jobs have such high standards, is beyond me,"

Amen - it is very difficult when unemployment is high. More applicants than jobs - so they think they want a PHd to run a cash register.

I was working in an Arby's during the recession. I had seniority over a man with a Masters' who had been teaching at Adrian College and they cut staff. Never forgot that. Man couldn't fathom the register...

Try the computer industry. For some f---ing reason, the qualifications bear no resemblance to the actual job requirements, the HR people (or worse, the staffing agencies) that list the jobs have NO idea what the hell they're talking about, they want MCSEs for jobs where an MCSE doesn't mean diddly squat... and best of all, I can name at least two places in Toledo that seem to be advertising on a regular basis for people. Of course, they're not interested in hiring me, although I'd do fine in those jobs. To top it off, the two places I could name have a BAD habit of giving potential employees stupid tests. When you ask your potential employees "which is better, Gateway or Dell?" and "which is better, AMD or Intel chips?", the REALLY smart, experienced folks run away, because they know they're entering the Dilbert Zone. I'm sorry, but I find that sort of stuff to be a slur and an insult to not only myself, but the other potential applicants.

And, oh, by the way, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services's SCOTI website is pure crap. It doesn't work with Firefox, and they won't fix it. They used to claim it worked on Netscape 4.x and greater, until I downloaded Netscape 8.1 and that didn't work. Their solution: revise the statement to say it only works on Netscape 4.x to 8.0. They haven't fixed a fucking thing. Nice way to waste tax dollars and lock out job seekers, assholes.

AC, I agree that those who have given up are not counted, however, the new claims for unemployment are down and I thought it would be nice to highlight some good news for our area.

While we don't have the low rate of unemployment like Delaware County has at least we aren't in the top ranked numbers for unemployment. We are higher than the state average of 5.3 percent.

Come over here to Port Clinton and tell me how great our 9.whatever% figure looks. Remember that "we" don't apply to my ass, 'cause my ass isn't in Toledo/Lucas County/Wood County.

We just opened an unnecessary Mall*Wart SuperCenter here. Maybe that's why figures are lower than normal. Cause even when you're working 8 hours a week, that's still "employment" for the purposes of the figure.

AC: "For some f---ing reason, the qualifications bear no resemblance to the actual job requirements,"

And I just found out that at the private schools (including daycare) they typically advertise all 'degreed' teachers. My sister is interviewing for teaching positions next year. She got beat out by someone with a technical degree.

THEY DON'T EVEN CARE IF THE DEGREE IS NOT IN TEACHING!!!!

Ok, ahem - I feel better now :-)

These numbers are based on claims? They should go door to door and check who has a job.

You have to meet certain requirements to even file for unemployment. I cannot agree with those numbers.

If people lose faith in the police department and feel nothing ever gets done, the number of 911 calls will decrease. That does not mean that actual crime is down, it just means reported crime is down.

No, it's not based on unemployment claims.

Apparently the government does some sort of survey, damned if I've ever heard of anyone being asked though, where they actually ask a very very limited number of households in one of their messed-up geographic statistical areas, how many people are a) employed, b) actively looking for work, or c) not seeking work and not working.

One of the fucked-up aspects of this is that if you VOLUNTEER your time in, say, a family-owned enterprise (farm chores, family-owned store), meaning you're not paid but your family runs the farm or business, you're counted as employed. Probably the same goddamn thing happens if you're an unpaid volunteer or intern.
