My work area looks very similar to yours (at least, in terms of the level of organization).
How does the old saying go? "If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, then what does an empty desk signify." :)

I know excatly where every important paper is and the further down the pile in piles 1,2,&3, the less important it is. And of course I have the "leaning tower of crap" conveniently located on the edge of my desk, just above the waste basket.
This is what I call "The Self-Cleaning Desk" the higher the crap the more it leans and eventually sheds a few into the waste basket

My desk/work area, is is cluttered, but not too messy - I clear out the unnecessary stuff & mess often enough. I spend a lot of time on the computer & sell rare & collectable books, antiques, etc. so my desk reflects a lot of that - value guides, a bit of a hodge podge of this & thats that I've accumulated; a blow-up of the "Scream" that reflects my mood a lot; s small pic of John Lennon; and an enormous stack of books waiting for me to get busy. An empty desk is boring to me - I like to see things on it that make me smile.
