New version of Toledo Talk

    April 23, 2003

New signs will welcome people to Toledo. Doh! - "Toledo is 'glad you're here.' Why? Because Toledo is 'a great place to be.' Those simple sentiments will welcome drivers entering Toledo beginning next month. The signs, which were produced by Mayor Jack Ford's arts consultant, Susan Reams, proclaim ToledOH!, which the viewer can interpret as Toledo, Oh!, or Toledo, Ohio! Or - while it wasn't intended by the mayor - as Tole-'Doh!,' which fans of The Simpsons TV show know as Homer Simpson's favorite expression. 'It is to articulate that Toledo is a great place to be,' Mr. Ford said yesterday. 'The colors move together well. We’re just trying to be catchy.'"

More flap over this new sign. A crisis has hit Toledo.

"Mayor Jack Ford has delayed approving new welcome signs with 'ToledOH!' after learning about the potential for Toledo to be equated with the television cartoon character."
