Report card for Toledo Public Schools - It's a good thing the renewal levy didn't pass earlier this month. No need to keep pouring money into a pit. "Attendance is up to 93 percent, but Toledo's schools remain in Academic Emergency, meeting just six of the 22 performance areas set by the state. Ninth graders show the most improvement, while fourth graders show the least in the city district." At least Toledo isn't last. That honor goes to Dayton who scored a zero. What about other local schools? Ottawa Hills scored a perfect 22, Anthony Wayne and Perrysburg 21, Maumee 17, Oregon 16, Northwood 15. Here is the Ohio Department of Education's summary for Ohio and here's the full report (400K PDF) for Toledo. It will be interesting to see how the school board spins out of this.

I did hear a school board member give an excuse on TV Tuesday night for the bad report card. He said it's because special education students are now included, and before they weren't. Without the special ed students, Toledo scored an 8, instead of a 6. That's a difference between sucks and sucks more.

Explanation for including special ed students:

"But this year, the state had to blend its testing system with new federal requirements that are part of the No Child Left Behind Act, said J.C. Benton, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Education.

That meant testing and including the performance of students with disabilities in the districts’ overall results, developing an "adequate yearly progress" standard, applying that standard to subgroups of students by race and socioeconomic situations, English-speaking, and special education status in three grades, and analyzing how districts and schools performed at those sublevels."

We cannot have results overnight. It is a progressive thing and we are improving that is what matters. There is progress.
