Positives About Public Schools - The embedded link takes you to the Blade "Letters to the Editor" and you have to scroll down to the Letter from Craig Franz entitled Many public schools are doing a good job.
All too often, our public schools are the brunt of criticism, but many are doing an excellent job. The afore-mentioned letter says it very well. Constructive criticism to advocate and suggest improvements serves an important role. None-the-less, this message thread is intended for people to share the good things about our public schools. So, post your public school accolades here.

I apologize. I mispelled the author of the letter and realized it as soon as I hit the submit button. The last name is spelled F-r-a-n-t-z.
In order to save you time in scrolling for the letter, I have copied and pasted below the text of the Craig Frantz letter:

Many public schools are doing a good job
Once again, The Blade has written an editorial (July 6) about the dreadful state of public schools. I would like to remind The Blade that Ottawa Hills, Sylvania, and Perrysburg have public schools that are doing just fine. If The Blade meant to say that schools in Toledo are failing, I would disagree; most Washington Local schools are rated effective or better.
It must have meant that Toledo Public Schools are failing. Ask the parents of students at Beverly, Crossgates, or Elmhurst if Toledo schools are failing their children and I believe most would say no.
Toledo has many neighborhoods, and many of them are not doing so well, what with high crime, drugs on the streets, fatherless families, and unwed, high-school moms. Many have high unemployment, no grocery stores or gas stations, and the only new stores are selling pay-day loans.
After 18 years of working for Toledo Public Schools, it has become obvious to me that most teachers work hard to teach their students, and that most parents want the children to succeed. Schools are like a mirror. They reflect the neighborhood where they are located.

Accolades? Does a day counter with the headline No school shootings in ___ days count?

Sorry, Roland.

This letter writer f-r-a-n-t-z offers nothing that people with a brain don't already know. Schools reflect the neighborhood in which they are situated. Most people do not enter teaching to be police officers and babysitters. Most truly want their students to succeed because that means they are a success themselves. So what?

Why do we constantly have to defend our public schools and highlight their successes? They are what they are.

P-burg and S-town are class operations. I as a taxpayer say they better damn well be because I am paying through the butt for these schools. When the schools fail and I still pay through the butt, as in the case of TPS, then the Blade is perfectly justified in calling them out.

You public school people need to get your accolades from somewhere else, unless you want to do more, with less of my money. I would gladly pay in accolades rather than dollars.
