I think its funny seeing how transparent all these pro-union councilpeople are. They're all for Costco because its a union shop and they pay so well. They chant the words Living Wage as a mantra to hypnotize all their minions... They go on ad naseum on the evils of Walmart and how Walmart will break the backs of the people...
Then the first thing they do is approve a wiaver of the living wage for Costco.

Does anyone know - off the top their head - how many times the living wage has been waived versus how many times it hasn't?
I know, I know...I should go look it up myself....

Im still in awe how in the supposed "land of the free" the government can dictate how much an employer has to pay an employee.
In a city that's supposedly trying to encourage new business development the whole idea just seems ludicrous.
If a business comes to town and doesnt pay enough to get qualified workers, he will either fail, or be forced to pay for what he needs.
To have the town council need to approve his wage still always seems creepy to me.

Who started this living wage deal anyway? Seems like it was Gerkin or Catchupcabbage, wasn't it? This thing needs to be abolished.

I thought this was satire. Seriously. There is a Federal Minimum Wage - that cannot be overturned for non-exempt employers at a state or local level. This employer would not be exempt from that Federal level.
They've already gotten under the wire with this twice?
:-) Kind of like the gun bans....eventually they'll have a couple of eyes staring them down over the top of a bench asking them if they've ever heard of the Federal government. Canubelieveit.

Katie the city's living wage has nothing to do with the Federal Minimum - which should also be abolished, but that's a different post.
The city's living wage is $10.57 per hour. Its bullsh*t to force an employer to pay ANY wage at all - if they could get people to work for free, that should be between the employer and employee.
I wouldnt work for free, but then I wouldnt work for the minimum wage either - OR the living wage the city forces on people... I just seek out employers who pay better and show them the experience and skills I can bring to the table and we work something out. THATS the American way.

I agree with the living wage thing, but honestly Cosco's rate of pay is only seven cents lower then the $10.57 That doesn't really seem like a big enough difference to cause such a ruckus about. They also offer fairly decent health insurance from what I heard.
