New version of Toledo Talk

    September 3, 2006

WHERE HAVE ALL THE POSTER'S GONE... - For the most part...I enjoy "Toledo Talk"...yet...

Have noticed some really great posters are NOT posting as regular...wondering...why...

Possibly...it is...simply...because it's summer...less time on the computer...or...is it...

Personal Attacks...I don't post as often as I did...for that reason..."Ouch" Button or not...

I don't understand why poster's have to resort to this...I have been personally attacked for my opinion...my use of "CAPS" used on comments(that is how I type)...I have read personal attacks to other posters...

Why do YOU suppose posters reduce themselves to such a level as to personal attacks...as intelligent as poster's appear this behavior shows NOT...

Comments ...

MARIELORA, I am back! Thanks for the heads up on topic regarding Jeep buy outs.

Personal attacks, come from those who what to end subject matter, those who want to shut someone up, those who don't understand subject matter. Those who lack common courtsey!

The "caps" comment to you; I had read and commented on. I felt it was said in fun by poster!

You big headache YOU!

I haven't been around here long, but I find that there are a lot less personal attacks than on other boards.

THE USE OF CAPS is UNDERSTOOD TO BE SHOUTING. That's just the way it has always been since the advent of electronic communication. However, the use of caps here and there is understood to add emphasis to words within a sentence and IS appropriate, so it's probably nothing you should worry about.

One might question your placement of emphasis IN writing because it is unstructured and really doesn't add anything TO YOUR message.

Emphatic caps imply inflection to a reader and enable them to "hear" the writer's words. Misplaced emphasis truly does make for difficult reading.

Don't get me wrong...I am not an English teacher - only a casual user of the language - but I do understand that the proper use of words and style is important to the integrity of a message.

You might notice that I tend to use elipses incorrectly....so I am just as guilty as MOST when it comes to creating my own form, flow, and style.

Get a copy of the AP Stylebook (or other good source) and compare the writing of many of our friends to a "standard". I think you will find that most people are just as awkward as you and me.

Peace,

Chuck

I am fairly new to Toledotalk as a participant but not as a viewer. I watched for several months before signing up. I agree, there is a marked difference in the number of people who participate and also in the "regulars" who commented almost daily.

Some seemed like pretty hefty politicos. Do you think being in campaign season, some of those "regulars" are busy with campaign efforts and don't have a chance to check out ToledoTalk right now?

Also, school has started. That might have taken a few participants back to the classroom as either teachers or students.

Marie - alot of us are still here. But sometimes it seems like a topic is getting beat to dust so we just wait and see if there is a point where to comment that won't seem like a re-hash of some previous post.

Summers are busy for everyone, that's for sure, but I'm sure lots of posters (me included) always check in and see what's being discussed.

BTW - how's that new 'child' in your household? :)

I doubt I'm one of the ones you're talking about Marielora but I've been gone out of town for almost 2 weeks now.

But on a side note any Toledoans going to Pittsburgh for the UT/Pitt game should know to take their own beer. The tailgating parties don't sell any and neither does the stadium. I found out this weekend the hard way. Maybe I'll spend all the money I saved on beer buying cancer sticks.

I'll give you a few of my reasons:

It's summer.

Some topic restrictions, on my favorite topics.
(I did not argue about the restrictions, I just adjusted to and accepted them.)

PITA posters.

And, I'm writing more on my own blog.

But, I'll pop in once in a while, just to check things out ;-)

I haven't been here as much as I used to be, partly because I'm getting out more and having more meetings and attending events. I write on Glass City Jungle regulary but I have fallen behind on my other blog and a few other places I write and here too.

Yesterday we went to Arti Gras, today we went to Pack the Parks then Riverfest. Tomorrow (well actually now today since it's after midnight) my youngest daughter and I will be at the Labor Day Parade.

So I think many of us are still out there it's just I haven't found a way to go without sleep.

I have a job, it's not steady and it completely sucks. I'm sure I could have a nicer one if I decided to give in and work at Mall*Wart for a pittance, but I'd have to spend the time being nice to fat conservative cocksuckers who hate anyone who's not white and born-again Christian like you while you wander the store buying cheap plastic NASCAR crap imported from China. Unfortunately, I'd probably snap. See, over here in "Vacationland", we've heard a lot of comments from fat fucks like you along the lines of how we locals should be grateful that you shop in our area and how we should shop during the weekdays so you fat fucks who come up here to go to Cedar Point or the islands can get through the checkout with your six cases of beer and bags of ice and munchies for your cottage and so on faster. I took enough fucking abuse from proto-versions of yourself growing up because I was smarter than they were yet I didn't live in a quarter-million-dollar lakefront home and have The Gap and Nike and other logos all over my clothes. After having the first few run-ins with doing all the work in a "group" activity and the "let me copy your homework or I'll kick your ass" stuff, I decided not to put up with any more of it and not do all the kiss-ass stuff that looks good on a college application and scores scholarships, and I backed off from being such an overachiever with the hope that not blowing the curve every time would lessen the animosity. As a result, I didn't get any scholarships. Nevertheless, I went to college and found out it was more of the same: a pile of assholes who drank, smoked dope, and partied all the time, who couldn't shut up, turn down their stereos, and leave me the fuck alone. I gave up on trying to learn anything in that environment. Community college was less of that but became more as rising tuition priced a lot more kids out of the universities, plus the fat fucks like you who are in charge of the community colleges jerked up the tuition there and gave yourselves big administrative pay increases or made deals amongst your business and political friends to blow the money on educating people in China or on "Homeland Security" bullshit instead of having proper lab equipment, classes in actual warm buildings instead of beat-up trailers next to the railroad tracks, and paying actual knowledgeable people to teach those classes and run the labs instead of some fat-fuck businessman with a master's or Ph.D who part-times it evenings or weekends in order to pay off the mortgage and loans he's got. And look what we have now, fat bigoted fucks like you *still* giving me shit because you're too fucking dumb to live up to the so-called Christian morals you try to enforce upon others because without some sort of of framework or benchmark or standard or reference point, the games you and others like you play to justify your existence and make you feel good about yourselves have no meaning and no point. You're so obsessed with measuring how much better you are on the basis of how much shit you own, how big it is, and how closely you follow some book supposedly written by an invisible man in the sky, ***half of which supposedly chronicles the life and times of a guy who attempted to get people not to do that sort of thing***. You handle all the insecurity and uncertainty in your life by taking it out on people who won't play by *your* rules or can't or won't fight back.

I've had the misfortune to work in customer service type jobs where someone, usually someone who'd consider themselves to be a good Christian, would go ballistic and spend an actual hour spewing hate and anger and threats because something went wrong with their goods or services, or worse yet, some overpaid lawyers wrote 20 pages of fine print that the idiot signed without reading because he or she had to keep up with the Joneses in the size war. If the f*cking moron would have spent that hour learning how things work or reading up on the contract and laws, things would be much, much different, and probably a lot nicer. I never want to go back to such jobs, but unfortunately fat ignorant f*cks like you caused all the manufacturing jobs to leave and turn America into a "service-based economy" pyramid scheme of shitting on people. To wit, the high-paid lawyers, politicians, and executives set the standards for "success" and con most people into following those standards. They contrive ways to shit on all the layers under them, the next layer below them of slightly less well-to-do/less powerful people shit on all the layers below them, and so on, so that your average joe working as a cashier or waitress or customer support gets shit on by everyone from the executives to the guy living next door because they've had a bad day and they cannot possibly believe that they're affecting someone else's life by spreading it around.

So f*ck you, billy, for perpetuating the rat-race. You and those like you with your condescending attitudes for anyone who refuses to play within a framework that allows you to take your shit out on them so you can feel better about yourself.

In AC we have the quintessential post 20th century liberal:

- A negative attitude that keeps him from contributing value in a free market (and thus reaping the rewards).

- Seething hatred for those that do contribute value.

- A constant use foul language that magnifies his lack of respect for others and dignity in himself.

- An escape mechanism into elitism through which he comforts himself by maintaining that he is smarter than everyone else (that is, those that are happy, have good attitudes and are successful).

posted by MARIELORA at 09:20 A.M. EST on Mon Sep 04, 2006     #

In babbledroid we have the quintessential neocon:

- A condescending elitist attitude.

- Continual talk about the so-called "free market", completely ignoring the actual state of the market, how it's being manipulated, wage declines, and so on.

- Having to measure himself in terms of some vague concept such as "value", reinforcing my points about turning everything into some sort of pissing match on how much better he is than anyone else by using a scale he derives by his own rules.

- Using the self-delusion he generates from defining himself on the basis of some self-derived scale as an escape mechanism to comfort himself that he is somehow a worthwhile human being and super-special in the entire universe/Creation, while being completely ignorant of the circular/self-referential/recursive nature of this. The first step is to make some kind of moral or value judgement against someone else, e.g. "I'm better than AC because I got me more stuff than AC/I believe in Jesus/my penis is bigger/whatever." The next step is to use thoughts like those to counter all the uncertainty and doubt that exist in the human mind, to mask those things by thinking those thoughts somehow make you better than someone else, and assigning terms like "success" to them. Then the cycle starts by believing you're successful and that's grounds to be happy, and that you're happy and that's proof you're successful. Everything from there is maintenance of this cycle by blocking out doubt and uncertainty.

Almost every person does this, they're just unaware of it because it's subconscious. Whether it's "I'm better than you because I'm not you" or "I'm better than you because I go to church and believe in God" or "I'm better than you because I'm successful" (never mind that you're defining success on your own personal private scale), it's the same goddamn thing, which I'm unfortunate enough to be truly aware of.

But anyway, you can go f*ck off along with billy, babbledick, as I'm not going to play here anymore today so you can derive personal amusement and satisfaction from it.

So a few posters find it neccessary to get personal with each other...shouldn't be that big a deal to the rest of us.

I personally believe a few posters went away or have been very limited in their input after jr (rightfully) took off on them on a topic a couple weeks ago that dealt with homosexuality...

And, of course, the famous Fequalgate.

In short, some conservatives have fled the scene.

I haven't been here that long, but I'm glad I found the place.

I don't know everybody's relationship to each other yet, or what's gone down the pike before I got here, obviously, but I'm picking some of it up. I know that some of the subject matter that AC rants about I agree with, tho not necessarily his method or tone.

I also agree with his, and everybody else's, right to say it without getting dumped on. I was a moderator for 8 months on another board and I hated it. Too many vague rules (the owners were trying to keep porn out but could never tell us exactly what they considered porn, not surprising) and too many people getting their noses out of joint about the rules and who was saying what and the 'ban him, he did this' bullshit.

If you don't like what someone says and you don't think you can put together a rational, well-constructed counterpoint that can lead to an effective conversation, just ignore the post. Personal attacks add nothing and will eventually kill the board, like it did the one I moderated. ALL of the intelligent people stopped coming around and we were left with people testing the rules, potty humor, and personal attacks. It gets so old.

REM: You are what you type.

ALTERNEA made some excellent points about netiquette. I've asked many less net-savvy co-workers to remove capslock when they email. They really did not know that I could hear them yelling in my head. It gets tiring after awhile.

Now, I'm going outside and take a car ride and do some shopping,
WHO'S WITH ME!!!? ;p

Nice touch McCaskey. AC has to be one of the top 5 all time posters here and top 1 or 2 in recent months. He may be just one of "a few" in numbers, but his bile is disproportionately splattered all over this site and, largely, defines it at this point.

Having to measure himself...defining himself

AC, your entire post assumes that I was in some way commenting about myself or comparing you to me. Had I done either, your post would have legs.

I didn't say anything about me. My comments were exclusively confined to how pathetic you are and, in a larger sense, how you your type is a natural and predictable outcome of the basic philosophies of liberalism.

Judy said:

"I sure wish Skippy wasn't off limits, I could tell you boat loads about him."

Like what? Give us a couple teasers.

Are your "boat loads" of info about Wade rooted in fact or fiction? Can your info be verified through old news stories or public documents?

That statement by Judy is why I don't want this site to become a dumping ground for personal trash about public officials.

If you have an opinion about an official based upon a story in the media, then you can post it here. Over the past several weeks, I've mentioned a couple of times in comments about how I've relaxed the guidelines as to what's allowed here when it concerns political officials.

That should be apparent in the new topics permitted over the past month that have had as subjects: Ken Blackwell, Karl Rove, Frank Szollosi, Dave Schulz, Ben Konop, Tim Walberg, Bob Fitrakis, and Joe Schwarz. Where are the females?

Anyway, I'm not modifying the posting guidelines page just yet to reflect this change. But for those paying attention, they know that topics about other public officials are allowed.

Now, if your "boat loads" of info about a public official is based upon personal knowledge that's not verifiable, here's what you do. If you don't have a blog, start one at Typepad, Wordpress, or Blogger. Get your site listed at ToledoBloggers.com. Then post your "boat loads" of info about your favorite official on your own site. And if your info is interesting, maybe someone will share it with others by linking to your site from here.

This is complete and utter tripe.
Because AC tends to get very personal (and yes, at times, for my taste too personal, even when I'm in agreement with his viewpoints), this tendency is now somehow a natural extention of liberalism?
With moronic statements like this, you're letting your true colors show. Anyone who doesn't share your political or philisophical point of view is pathetic, in other words.
You're not to be taken seriously.

I just got tired of everyone personaly attacking those who may have a different opinion. I find it discouraging that in todays society, in the USA, people cannot express their varying opinions without the other side stooping to low tactics as personal attacks!

It has gotten so bad here that JR has had to inject policies which prevent opinons on Political candidates in fear that some slander may be perpetuated and opening him up to lawsuits. So to prevent the few from acting irresponsibly, everyone has become subjected to what amounts to censorship of opinions.

From TT posting guidelines...
The following change was made April 16, 2006
No more topics about politicians or political candidates will be allowed...

What I cannot understand is how membership at TT continues to rise but the number of comments and posting continue to decline.

No not all. I never said anything about personal attacks. How you made that connection is byond me.

The character traits that I referred to in my post are specifically:

- A negative attitude that keeps him from contributing value in a free market (and thus reaping the rewards).

- Seething hatred for those that do contribute value.

- A constant use of foul language that magnifies his lack of respect for others and dignity in himself.

- An escape mechanism into elitism through which he comforts himself by maintaining that he is smarter than everyone else (that is, those that are happy, have good attitudes and are successful).

You can argue about it all you want McCaskey, but, right or wrong, this is the face that many people see of modern liberalism.

According to your arguments, if I were to consider myself a liberal all the above statements would apply to me as well. That's quite the inflexible mental lockbox you've constructed for yourself, Babble. That's the face that many see of modern conservatism. And there's no doubt as to the right or wrong of that viewpoint.

Woo, look at him go!!!

First off, my post was in response to coward saying that hard workers who happen to be conservative live in a "fantasy world".

I have a job, it's not steady and it completely sucks. I'm sure I could have a nicer one if I decided to give in and work at Mall*Wart Translation - I could better myself, but Im not willing to.

On to your first single paragraph ramble. Coward, I believe I counted you using the word fat, 7 times. Seeing as how youve never met any of the people you're railing against, Im guessing you're using the word 'fat' simply as an insult.

If someone were to use the word 'gay' in the same manner, you'd be quick to call them a homophobe. Would that mean you're a fatophobe?

Do you have nightmares about 300 pounders calling the manager on you for never asking if they want fries with their order? Are you afraid a jumbo will sneak up on you and stomp on your flip floppie toes?

Just curious -

Billy-- you make some valid points concerning the 'fat' comments (risking the wrath of AC here, LOL).

But, in point of fact, Babbleman injected the initial 'political' reference:

I got bored of this life and found a second one at www.secondlife.com. If you want me to show you around, email me and I'll tell you who I am there. It's fascinating and way more fulfilling than arguing with liberals.

This, of course, is the equivilant of waving raw meat in front of AC, and he responded in his own unique style, LOL.
Babbleman threw the first glob of pudding in this food-fight.

I think Rooky is onto something. Does anyone here have a sister?

With my many escapades with AC I have at times held him in contempt and others with deep reverence and respect. He does truely believe what he says which I can respect. But he falls into the same trap (and I have done it too) that many of my generation do and that is turning to personal attacks in lieu of argumentative points to debate or discuss.

I have given some personal attacks but I try not to for the sake of the board turning into a laundry list of the latest "Yo Mama So Fat" jokes.

As for AC I would nominate him to replace Alan Colmes on HANNITY and colmes so that the show can be somewhat entertaining and Sean would have to defend himself against someone who would legitimately spar with him.

BTW - You're Mama's so fat she sat on Walmart and lowered the prices.

I was actually trying to make a point - let me try a little further:

fat/gay people are born that way.

fat/gay people are that way by choice.

I have fat/gay friends.

I dont like fat/gay people on sight.

fat/gay people are a blight on society.

fat/gay people have diseases that cost our society billions.

I work with fat/gay people and they are valuable employees.

I would think twice before bringing a fat/gay friend with me to a get together with other friends.

fat/gay people are the way they are because of their parents.

Being fat/gay is just plain wrong.

I tease people by calling them fat/gay.

If you dont like fat/gay people, you're phobic.

I'd love my kids no matter what - even if they were fat/gay.

I do not fear fat/gay people, what I feel is revulsion, not a fear.

I enjoy fat/gay jokes, but I find gay/fat jokes offensive.

The point I was making is this - you can agree with any of the above statements, you can disagree with them, you can admit to predjudices you have, or you can consider youself very tolerant, but if I erase the first highlited word in a statement and you would have a different answer than if I'd erased the second word, then you're a hypocrite. And Im seeing that out here.

Fat, as a disadvantaged group, has not been fully deployed yet by the left. The fat movement is just getting started. NPR took an early move at framing it as a class issue. And trial lawyers have been nipping around the edges for several years.

But there has been a lot on the liberal plate lately. The memo has not reached them all yet. Once it does, they will all snap into their PC posture and march right.

Sorry, I'm wrong, babble has whatever the medical term is for an unhealthy obsession of liberals and liberalism.

Note how he's trying to neatly box me into his perceptions of "liberal" with the "not got the memo yet" talk. I suppose if I showed him my gun collection, his head will explode trying to reconcile gun ownership with liberalism. Hmmm. This gives me an idea... hey babbledroid, Michael Moore is a big fat f*ck who needs to go on a diet and shut his pie hole.

Hey Holland!

Guess who is going to Richmond AND getting to hang in the pits?!?!?! (giggle) Good to hear ya again!

As far as posting goes, I've been focused on that smoking/freedom of choice thing somewhere on this site.

Politicans like Skip, Frank, The Gherkin and others have the wool pulled over 80% of yours eyes, and seeing that the posting issue has not yet yielded towards these politicans exposure to their scams, I've found it difficult to express my distain amongst those in the blog-o-sphere.

And yes, I've tried other political sites locally, but seeing I called Junta's "Progressive" site for the fraud that it was and Liberal Dem's site is basically a survellance of the Democratic Headquarters, it pains me that there really is no outlet for credible posters to "shine the light of reality" under the "rocks where these frauds dwell" and bring these personal-agenda hacks to their knees.

JR, altho I sincerely appreciate the wall you're pressed against, ToledoTalk was THE forum for those with the information on the goings-on within the political circles in the area to inform/vent the rest of us, as well as providing information for an educated view on the politics behind the scenes. Carty is a putz, yet he was the best choice provided. (Yes, I am drooling as I chomp at the bit.)

Those with weak minds have confused my confidence and knowledge as arrogant and abrasive, yet I have not found one to denounce facts provided onto me and expressed to the community. I am fortunate to have the ability to banter with fellow Toledoans on issues that touch the lives of my brethern, yet it sucks that the avenue to be heard is still a closed road.

So until then, I will carry the "Freedom of Choice" banner on my trusty steed.

I do not post as much because it is pretty pointless. I see the main function of the board to come in and check on various highlights of happenings in the Toledo area. In addition to announcements relating to business, government, education, etc. (Fuck)

For the most part debating on here is pretty worthless because we are all just individuals arguing our points of view with no real outcome in mind. I would rather talk with people in person and work to change something than come in here and read the same old crap.
(Fuck)
So I still check in on the topics, but don't post a whole lot because I don't get a lot out of it.

So oh fucking well!

Uh, well, I hate to disappoint you there jdmsbyrd, but the f-bomb count is calculated on a per comment basis not per word. So no matter how many times you use it in a comment, it only counts once. But good luck on the goal you have set for yourself. With overachievers like you not posting here, I'm not sure how we'll survive.

Obviously, jdmsbyrd missed the little note at the bottom of the fbombers page where it says: "So this is strictly for entertainment purposes only." Entertainment, as in lighten up, relax.

"With overachievers like you not posting here, I'm not sure how we'll survive."--jr, I would expect you to take some offense to my post, seeing how you are the moderator, but I am sure you will survive.

This does impact my point however. Did I ever say that I am an overachiever? Did I ever question toledo talk's ability to sustain itself without me? No, those are the opinions that you made by reading my post. Clearly, you had some sort of reaction to my words and responded in a cynical somewhat dismissive way. I was just giving my response to the post, maybe you need to "..lighten up, relax."

I think that is what turns people off sometimes about posting here as well. We respond to someone else, make comments, and give opinions, then another person responds to one little thing you said as opposed to the whole post, and it escalates from there.

With 900 or so members and only a limited # of regular posters, I would say that this site is more of a bulletin board than an avenue for change/ action. Not meaning to offend, but if the shoe fits...

"Did I ever say that I am an overachiever?"

jdmsbyrd, with your use of the f-word five times in one of your comments above that was done to prove who knows what, I just implied you were striving for success. My bad.

"I think that is what turns people off sometimes about posting here as well."

I've said in the past more than once, that thin-skinners need not apply here. The sensitive types can go elsewhere. As you can see, this site has no advertising, so traffic means nothing to me. I don't analyze web server log files, so I don't even know what the traffic numbers are because I don't care.

Unless some good ideas are suggested, I don't plan to do much more than I already have done to make people feel comfortable, so that user input increases. With requiring a valid e-mail to create an account, tweaking the posting guidelines, deactivating the "Guest" account, creating the "Ouch!!!" command, and whatever else, I've done enough, in my opinion, to keep the conversations civil. It is a community site, so why don't others assume some responsibility?

jdmsbyrd said:

"I would say that this site is more of a bulletin board than an avenue for change/ action. Not meaning to offend, but if the shoe fits..."

Over 60 comments exist in this thread now. I've scanned through them all again, and I don't see a single suggestion by anyone as to how to improve things. I see complaints. What a shock. More complaints than suggestions. The biggest complaint seems to be about personal attacks, but no one offers a way to curb them.

I don't even see a suggestion for positive change from you, jdmsbyrd, who likes to talk about change. You only offer complaints. You have become an example of what you don't like. Why not offer suggestions as to how to make the site more "fan friendly?"

People bitch about the vitriolic commentary, which happens most often in politically-based threads, so months ago, I suggest toning down the political-speak, and people bitched about that decision. I find it humorous.

Click the "Ouch!!!" link on inflammatory comments. That command is less than two months old, but at some point, I plan to use the results of the "Ouch!!!" command to warn users and to deactivate accounts temporarily or even permanently, if necessary. But the "Ouch!!!" command, thus far, hasn't been used enough to warrant much in the way of warnings, except for maybe AC.

The "Ouch!!!" command is your chance to complain about what someone said. If people don't complain in a programmatic way, I'm going to assume things are fine. I need to see what type of rhetoric Toledo Talk users are defining as inflammatory.

This site started with one user doing all the posting, and it can certainly carry on with only one as well. On a message board, people come and they go, just like in a physical community. Turnover is expected. Two years from now, I don't expect most of you to be posting here about the 2008 presidential election, but others, new people, will be.

I don't believe much of anything needs to be changed with this site.
Like practically all community-type bulletin boards, blogs, what-have-you, there are going to be topics, almost always ones with a social or political bent, that are prone to bring out the strident, the combative and the personal.
Because our society and our politics HAVE become combative and personal.
It's a reflection of what has transpired in the last ten years or so on our politcal and national landscape: a president has been impeached, there have been two (perhaps arguably only one) contentious, controversial presidential elections, a terrorist attack on our country followed by a war that has fractured our populace along the lines of whether or not one believes that war was justifiable.
Throw in the state of the media along the same time period: 24-hour talk radio, various and sundry all-news, 24-hour television cable news networks, competing along 'liberal vs. conservative' lines. Hundreds, maybe thousands of political blogs littered all other the internet.
It's no wonder we're all screaming at each other.
For those who want safe, sane online interaction, stick to 'favorite restuarants' or 'best neighborhoods in town to live' or 'favorite pet names' and the like. Nothing wrong with those. Or start a topic where others can jump in with ideas or suggestions that can actually help others in the online community.
If you look at Toledo Talk topics the past couple months or so, there's been a decent blend of postings that cover all bases, from the harmless and benign to the powder-keg variety.
It doesn't need to change.

Who says obviously he missed that? For all you or I know, achieving the top spot on the list might be entertainment for him.

#1 expression that pisses me off is "has too much time on his/her/their hands". #2 is "needs to get a life". I don't give a FUCK if someone derives entertainment or joy or pleaasure from building ships in a bottle, or scale models of buildings out of toothpicks, or collecting bottlecaps, or making giant balls of foil, or writing bad fan fiction, or whatever. More power to 'em. If it becomes a health and safety issue/someone ends up hurt, then it's a problem. If the crazy cat lady can feed all 50 of her cats and clean up after them, no problem. If there's dead cats and cat crap all over, that's a problem. I'd rather get paid less and for doing something I like to do that's less stressful, than take more money to be shit on and deal with irrational, illogical people every day, have ulcers, and end up losing out in the money department from having to be on medication. Plus I might be broke, but I'm a lot happier and more well-desposed to people (i.e. I'm not a prick who bawls out the guy at the cable company because I've had a day of being dumped on by other people and now when I went to watch my favorite show, my cable went out).

I don't even see a suggestion for positive change from you, jdmsbyrd, who likes to talk about change. You only offer complaints. You have become an example of what you don't like. Why not offer suggestions as to how to make the site more "fan friendly?" You can't change anything if people don't come together and agree to disagree sometimes, in order to work towards something better. Which is why I said in my original post that I don't respond as much, not because I don't like the site, but its purpose to me seems more like a bulletin board. There is never really a particular outcome from items posted on the board. Why would I want to offer suggestion to make this site more fan friendly when this is the norm for responses:"go get laid", "relax/ lighten up", "get a life/ or a real job" ? I was never saying that anything needed to be done, just offering my opinion and explaining my actions on this site, relating to this post.

jr--1. what is it that I am missing that is causing you to defend your actions? I never blamed anyone.

2. Why are you calling me to task on my comments? Believe me, If I though people here would be receptive to my banter about change/ and making things better, I would respond. However, I see how some people in here respond and we will leave it at that.

3.) (this last one is for anyone) What is the "purpose" for toledo talk? Is it close to my definition? I see the main function of the board to come in and check on various highlights of happenings in the Toledo area. the cursing and personal attacks should not be allowed. they are absolute thread-killers. if it happens, delete the particular post. if an individual continues with the inappropriate posts, block his/ her postings.

while it would be easy for someone to return under another name, the same process can be applied. after all, there's only a few posters these actions would apply.

putting a red box around a particular post only draws attention to it.

I don't disagree with this sentiment, and the cursing part is obvious (and would no doubt affect my posts on occasion) but when one says 'personal attacks', I think this gets into somewhat of a gray area.

See the exchange between madjack and myself under the topic J'Accuse!(And That's Enough.)

Did we get unneccessarily personal? I don't think so, but someone else may have a different standard in that regard. When does a heated exchange become something too personal that crosses some sort of line?

Then, there are the exchanges between Billy and AC, just for example, which obviously tend to get quite personal and are meant to be that way. But, why should the rest of us really care about the nature of their discourse? Isn't that their issue to deal with?

But, why should the rest of us really care about the nature of their discourse? Isn't that their issue to deal with?

i understand what you're saying and don't necessarily disagree with you. my point, though, is these exchanges kill the threads. once these exchanges take place, rarely does a thread continue on topic and/or provide an honest trade of thought.

"personal attacks" would be more of a judgement call, but the use of the ouch button could come into play. personally, i couldn't care less about the "personal attacks" and whether or not it hurts someone's feelings. people need to grow some skin. consider the source and the context. what matters to me, though, is the consequences to the thread.

Like you mentioned, wholesaler, you don't throw the first punch, but if you (or me or anyone) retaliate against someone who did throw that punch, you're still contributing to a thread that has now become a food-fight.

I still think people leave because they get frustrated by posters who hijack a topic and turn it into there own little soapbox about something other than the original posted topic and because of the continuous personal attacks on other posters.
Apparently some people cannot stay focused on topic and consequently they are unable to finish a written conversation on topic to any sort of reasonable conclusion.

This site is a reflection of reality, as well as a sounding board. Is this supposed to be some type of charm school, where everything is just so nice, and gullible people believe every word that is pushed and propagandized by idiots bearing false witness? That is not reality. The hot button topics do get personal. That's the way it is. People do come here with an agenda, and try to push it. Please vote now on whether or not I am a bad person in the "bad boy" category. Let's hurry up and get this over with. If there are more than five people voting me "bad," I will leave for one month. If there are more than six people, I will leave for six months!

Let us create an online Star Chamber and a judge, jury, and sentencing sytem right now.

In the early 1900s, American poet, biographer and dramatist Edgar Lee Masters, 1868-1950, commented:

"In the Star Chamber the council could inflict any punishment short of death, and frequently sentenced objects of its wrath to the pillory, to whipping and to the cutting off of ears. ... With each embarrassment to arbitrary power the Star Chamber became emboldened to undertake further usurpation. ... The Star Chamber finally summoned juries before it for verdicts disagreeable to the government, and fined and imprisoned them. It spread terrorism among those who were called to do constitutional acts. It imposed ruinous fines. It became the chief defense of Charles against assaults upon those usurpations which cost him his life. . . ."
In modern usage, legal or administrative bodies with strict, arbitrary rulings and secretive proceedings are sometimes called, metaphorically or poetically, star chambers.

Let's turn this site into a little goody- goody kindergarten school right now! If I am a bad boy, tell me right now! Who are the "bad people' and what should their punishments be? Who will be the judge? Who will be the jury? And who will carry out the sentencing phase?

Personal Attacks...I don't post as often as I did...for that reason..."Ouch" Button or not...

I don't understand why poster's have to resort to this...I have been personally attacked for my opinion...my use of "CAPS" used on comments(that is how I type)...I have read personal attacks to other posters...

Why do YOU suppose posters reduce themselves to such a level as to personal attacks...as intelligent as poster's appear this behavior shows NOT...

It sounds to me like the subject here is personal attacks. The question is whether people are leaving because of this, or other reasons. Therefore if the subject is personal attacks, then the topic of allowable punishments, and or remedies, should fit right in here. This would open up a new can of worms. Namely, who are the righteous ones, and who are the scummy personal attackers? This leads to the subject of: How will the scum be named and punished? This leads to the question of: Is anyone really who they claim to be, and what proof does anyone have? This leads to another question: How can a screen name disembodied from it's creator, be considered at an equal level as a living breathing human being? And are they on the same level as far as reality ? For instance: If I named myself skunk-breath and people made fun of me, do I have a right to whine about that? I hope this helped to clarify matters here!

I had a thought - don't you think that blogging/message boards bring out the same element at times, that driving in heavy traffic when you're late for work does? Throw in some of those people who don't realize that you can actually drive THROUGH a green light and you get a pressure valve under too much pressure.

Two statements I read from 'road rage' convictions reflected that they felt a distinct sense of anonymity in their cars and behaved in a way they would not have under other circumstances.

McCaskey is really the Green Lantern, and as proof I offer this poker chip, which I happened to have in my pocket when I saw him recharging his ring out back of the court house.

I could prove that Katie is really FireFly, but I lost the pix when my drive crashed.

Hmmm. Where have all the posters gone? Let me see now. I'm looking over here, and over there, and everywhere. Nope, I don't see them. Oh, there they are. Heck, I put the posters on my walls.

Help, I've fallen and I can't get up.

ToledoTalk is up to at least 1006 registered posters now. Does it really seem that the place is becoming poster-impoverished?

The base of registered users doesn't tell us anything about the involved base (i.e. readers and posters), since any number of that 1006 could have left permanently. Jr could try some coding to use the site cookie on visitor browsers to try to tell how many unique people are actually looking at the site. He can also spin up some more code to check last-posted datestamps for the population of posters to see a historical "abandonment rate" for the site.

Well, I finally got back on my feet (by way of New Hampshire, I think) but now I see that all the posters have fallen down. I'll see if I can't pick the posters up, brush them off, and start all over again!

Below is a copy of a comment I placed on the message thread that is entitled Choose candidates based on credentials.
I thought it worth placing in this message thread as well.

Some people just can't stay focused on task with the subject of the message thread. They keep going off on tangents, or they get into back-and-forth name calling, or they go into la-la land.

Is it any wonder there is a message thread entitled
WHERE HAVE ALL THE POSTER'S GONE... ?????

I said it before, and I'll say it again:

may we get back to:
Question: What do you think of Mr. Lippert’s letter and his suggestion concerning candidates’ résumés?
