Positive Connections Family Picnic Needs - I am helping to organize a family picnic for children who have graduated from the Positive Connections Program and their parents and family members.

Positive Connections is a collaborative effort with Unison, NAMI(National Alliance for Mentally Ill) and Big Brothers Big Sisters. They help children understand their parents' illness and to improve their coping skills by providing education about mental illness, peer support and one-to-one mentoring relationships with a caring adult role model. Nine classes have graduated through this program and I am proud to be a parent who has had all 4 of my children attend this program. It has helped them cope and understand about their fathers bi-polar.

With this picnic, we would like to help offer on going support to both children and parents/family members. Yesterday, I met with several parents who are helping me with ideas they would like to see. We are hoping for pizza or sub and other food donations and maybe some prize donations. So here I am asking if you know of places that could donate. We are also looking into groups(girl/boy scouts,Sororities/Fraternities)to help play games/activities with the children. The tentative date for this picnic is October 13, 2007 at Walbridge Park(across from the zoo) in the shelter house. I am sorry for the request but this is a program I believe in for children and really am exercising my resources on this using this outreach. You can reach me by email (sultrylatina2007@aol.com) or you can talk to the head of the Positive Connections program her name is Leona Lewis, and her number is 419.693.0631(Unison).

Thanks for your time,
Angie

Angie...UT opens back up in late august...suggest you call the Panhellenic Office or Office of Student Affairs to see if they can help you with contacting the Fraternities, Sororities and other groups for volunteers. Most groups do community service projects.

Most pizza chains have donation procedures. I know Marcos does. I actually called them once requesting pizza donations for a mentoring project my church was doing. Never called me back – LOL! – but maybe you will have better luck.

Thank you for your tips. They will be put to great use. I'll let you know what pans out.

suggest you call the Panhellenic Office or Office of Student Affairs to see if they can help you with contacting the Fraternities, Sororities

For fraternities and sororities, you'd want to contact the Office of Greek Life (http://greeklife.utoledo.edu/). (Panhellenic Council is a part of the Office of Greek Life, but Panhellenic only oversees sororities. The Greek office could put you in touch with all the organizations.) All Greek organizations have community service project requirements...you'll want to contact them as early as possible in the school year to be able to get on their calendar before it fills up with other opportunities. They generally get a lot of requests.

Along the same lines, you could try the local Alumnae Panhellenic. (Alumnae Panhellenic = representatives from all the local alumnae groups for NPC sororities. Not only does the Alumnae Panhellenic do its own service projects, but the reps from each individual sorority alumnae group report back to their respective groups, each of whom also may do service projects throughout the year.) Toledo's Alumnae Panhellenic doesn't have its own website that I'm aware of...if I can find out who this year's philanthropy chair is, I'll let you know. There was an officer transition over the summer.

Additionally, you may want to consider asking the Junior League. Your project could fall under the scope of one of their "Done in a Day" projects: http://juniorleaguetoledo.org/toledo/npo.jsp?pg=projects&article=1

Angie, put together a document and send it to all of the local unions, they usually make cash donations but they need a document of some sort to show the executive board for approval. You'd be surprised how many unions may contribute.

Thanks for both informations. My sons big brother will be talking to his fraternity. Hopefully they will be able to help.

I really like the idea about contacting the unions. I will be sure to bring a list at our next meeting. Thats when we will be doing the mailings. I am happy to state that we do have a professional comedian coming to entertain the families.
