Hole in the wall places to eat - What are some good places to eat that are off the beaten path? I am not looking for the Docks, Mancy's etc., more places in your neigborhood that don't get any press but are just as good

Other small, but good, places are:
The Freeway - great omelettes and burgers
Monroe St. Diner - haven't found anything unsatisfactory
Summit St. Diner - Breakfasts, burgers, gyros, salads, soups - they are ALL good
Briskets - good, but ordinary, food in generous portions.
One of a kind place?? Hands down has to be Maumee Chop House. They have the best crab cakes, baked brie, and prime rib. Not only is the food incredible, but the ambiance is full of old world elegance. And, they are now open for lunches as well!
I try to avoid those trendy specialty places. They are usually full of mediocre food, higher prices and hubbub.
Any other places someone comes up with I am more than interested in trying them out.

City Hall, Reynolds Rd. - never disappointing, upscale food, casual atmosphere, reasonable prices and reasonable portion sizes. And Oh yeah, a kickin daiquiri for those who imbibe. Interesting art work and decor too.

The Beirut on Monroe Street, great Lebanese Cuisine, generous portions, great service!

Dudleys is where I go when I want burgers.
My favorite mexican place is El Tipico, the portions are great and the price is excellent.
The Latern House is another place we both eat at and order take out from. They make an awesome egg foo young. After South Aire and the Hitching Post went out of business Lantern House and Yang's became our favorites.
I also like Shawn's Back Door, varied menu and they do serve alcohol, I don't think any of the other ones I mentioned do. Maybe Yangs...I don't drink anymore so I don't pay attention to that. Shawns has one of the best reubens I've had (well second to Vito's fold over reuben)

Another one that alot of people forget about but that still has great food is Dolly and Joe's, the prices are good a varied menu with some excellent seafood choices and we've never had bad service there. It used to be our favorite place to go but I've been on a Dudley's vs Shawns cycle lately.

Are any of the abovelisted places family friendly? My husband, 9 year old daughter & I are tired of going to IHOP...Lady Phoenix

I've taken my children to all of them except Shawn's. Shawn's early would probably be fine as well but it does have a large bar area.

Yes MARIELORA, the Beirut is one of our favorites.
I had a fine lunch today at the Downtown Latte on W. St. Clair St. They also have something going on there just about every evening. I missed it, but last Wednesday, a Metroparks naturalist was scheduled to give a presentation called "The Real Deal on Spiders, Bats and Owls." Back in the summer, I saw an excellent presentation about the history of the Swan Creek area in the Warehouse District. They have live music on the weekends. They got their liquor license a few months ago, so they now offer wine and beer. Cool place.
Best cheeseburger: Moe's Tavern in Rossford.
Chili mac: Ideal Hotdog.
Mexican: El Reparo and El Camino.
Check out the Toledo City Paper's restaurant index guide. They have a little write-up for many places with an indicator on the cost of the food.

I forgot about Moe's...I haven't been there in ages..

Ditto on El Reparo. City Hall is not really the best place for a child as the bar is out front. Cozy, but still a bar.
The best broasted chicken and cole slaw can be found at the Kold Keg if you want to venture way out Airport Hwy. nearly to Swanton. It is worth the drive. The place is usually packed and seating is limited.

Moutain Jacks... Oh yeah, they folded :-(
Damon's... Oh yeah, they folded :-(
Cooker's... Oh yeah, they folded :-(
Hop's... Oh yeah, they folded :-(
Our Place... Oh yeah, they folded :-(
Sigh, the good, they die young...

THE FREEWAY (another vote)
HIGH LEVEL CAFE (at the foot of the bridge)
THE GREEN LANTERN on Broadway
THE GOLDEN PHOENIX on Monroe (by where the old Frank's Nursery used to be)-love their Woo Dip Har (shrimp wrapped in bacon)-a little-known 'hole in the wall' oriental place w/great food. The sweet & sour soup is excellent also.
posted by Foolkiller at 09:45 P.M. EST on Tue Nov 01, 2005 #
The CAFE ) The High Level still looks exactly the same as it did when I was a kid back in the 50's-when it was one of the "Don's Drive-In" local chain. Even the same juke box is there (but I don't think it works any more)!

And another vote for THE BIG APPLE DELI as well. ;)

H.D. Charlie's on Glendale was excellent food too-but he closed. The smoking ban did him in.

RUMOR'S on Monroe Street was my favorite place to eat. Amazing Greek food and American stuff too.

Tiger Deli...great food and they have fresh figs when in season...
Webbers in Point Place - best fish anywhere and a truly affordable strip steak...their onion rings are to die for.
Rudy's Hot Dogs - great soups in addition to dogs that kids will love.
Chateau Louise in Luna Pier - largest cheeseburgers I've ever seen (I think they use a whole pound!).
Frog Leg Inn in Erie - gourment food at a great price...try the tenderloin in puff pastry appetizer - it could be a whole meal.

For pizza try the Village Idiot bar in Maumee. I know, the name doesn’t inspire great culinary visions but in spite of the name and its frequenters like me, the pies are freakin great. Now the “Idiot” is generally a kid joint with a smattering of old townies but the music (that is, if the crowd isn’t watching The Simpsons) is usually high quality and Nikki isn’t hard to look at. You can’t call in advance for pizza. Their deal is to feed you drinks while you wait which is okay as log as you can avoid the bathrooms. For an informal, I mean very informal (Hell, bring your dog) place for drinks, music, and late night munchie caliber pizza, try the Idiot.

If you can get past the decor, which in itself is a conversation piece, Ricco's on Jackman and Alexis have excellent food at VERY good prices, Prime Rib dinner $9.99 on Firday's.
The decor, lamps of every era from year to style on tables and much more! I could go on but I won't, GREAT FOOD!

Two more votes for WEBBER'S & THE CHATEAU LOUISE (although I usually get their pickerel or a steak).
Used to be a small place in Waterville I went to regularly called THE WOODEN GATE. Had limited hours the last time I went, but had the BEST Philly Steak sandwich in Northwest Ohio, IMO.

Elbow Room
Inky's

I know Inky's is
I believe it is on Lagrange and Sylvania or in the area at least. You said it jr, Ideal Hotdog has the best Chili Mac but very little recognition. Gino's Pizza isn't bad. The Tropica on Sylvania has the best bar burger ever. Brownstone Tavern's cajun mushrooms are awesome.

The best prime rib in N.W Ohio is at Shucker's out here in Swanton. I hear the sea food is good their too but I'm not a sea food person. Another vote for the chicken at Kold Keg ! Another out here in Swanton is Ko's Garden with really good chinese food.

Inky's
S.W. corner of Detroit & Sylvania.
I went there once...

If you're out East and you like prime rib you have to visit the Oregon Inn. (owned by the same people who run the Whitehouse Inn)
The portions are enormous (the largest prime rib looks like a roast) and the quality of the food is fantastic. Bring your eatin' pants.
Oregon Inn
6067 Bayshore Rd.,

I also have to give a HUGE thumbs up for the Big Apple Deli. Best subs in the city.

Jeez, I can walk to the Tropic's on a nice day. And, I need to walk after eating there! YUM!
I've heard the same thing about Ricco's prime rib, but have not ventured there yet.

Some spots I like:
Sams Diner - Dussel road, good food, friendly.
Sylvania Diner - good breakfast
Red Wells, worlds best roast beef, only still wish they carved it on the spot.
Dales in Maumee has good burgers, haven't tried Moes, but I will. Its a bar though for family people.
Busia’s Narozny - very good, Polish, quite reasonable, carrot cake is great !!! Someday will try their dill pickle soup.
A question - my daughter is a mashed potato snob, where is best mashed taters and gravy in town?????

Tying to catch up on the discussion and addressing the mashed potatoes....I used to love the Al Smith's place on Lewis Avenue. It was one of an extremely rare place to get a good meal at 2a.m.(they used to be open 24 hours). I loved the open faced roast beef/turkey sandwiches...they came with mashed potatoes and gravy.
That Al Smith's place has since closed and I don't know if the Al Smith's place located on Secor is comparable. I ate there once and was disappointed. The rumors I heard about the Lewis Ave. location closing: 1. The owner died and the family didn't want to continue the business and 2. they were tired of getting robbed and decided to close.

Gyro and Kabob Express on the corner of Airport Highway and Holloway in Holland.
Best Gyros, lamb shank, spinach pie, kafta, hummus, and baklava.
We go there at least twice a week.

Sam's Diner on Dussel! Mary Ann is awesome. Large portions also.

Mashed potato snob? That's cute! :)
As for where to get some of the best ones...try Cracker Barrell. The mashed taters are REAL taters, not instant and always seasoned just right. Ahmed's Family Restaurant on Alexis also has some delicious mashed taters.
And in total agreement about Sam's Diner! Awesome burgers. If you leave there and you're still hungry, then you should be checked for a tapeworm!
And, psyche, for BBQ try Shorty's on Monroe St. In my opinion it puts Smokey Bones to shame.

Not really a "hole in the wall" but a place I think I could eat every day if I had to would be Bangkok Kitchen on Dussel Rd. in Maumee. It is Tai food and you can order mild if your are like me and don't like spicy food.
The service there is also awesome. For example, I am not a big fan of onions...so I usually order my main dish without onions. One time my soup came out with scallions on top...no big deal I just scooped out. There is this server there who noticed that I order without onions and now serves my soup to me without onions also.
I go in there and she knows exactly how I order! This is impressive since I wouldn't consider myself a frequent customer...I maybe go there once every 4-6 weeks.
It's so nice to get good service now-a-days!!! :-)

Ditto for Bangkok Kitchen
Ditto for Busia’s Narozny
I will accept all the criticisms and brickbats you want to throw at me and I know this restuarant is not a hole in the wall but the garlic mashed potatoes at Fire Mountain are absolutely outstanding. They are real mashed potatoes, properly mashed and seasoned. Their regular mashed potatoes are good too. Go ahead...I am sure some of you wont like this mention.

What's wrong with Fire Mountain? I must have missed something somewhere - lol. Granted it's not a hole in the wall but then some of the other places mentioned aren't either. I've been there and I think the food is pretty good, only reason I try not to go there is the dessert section....it calls to me....and their dinner rolls? yum.....

When I worked at Packo's, people there raved about their mashed potato's. I think real butter & cream is their secret.
We stopped last week at a Fire Mountain on the way home from Amish Country, not sure what town it was, and I really didn't care for their food. The dinner rolls were good though. Maybe I didn't like the food because we sat at a table where the desserts stared right at me. Not liking my dinner was a good excuse to get right to the dessert.

Did a place called 'Eggs and Legs' exist at one time in town, or is that maybe a business idea I dreamt up?
Oregon's Freeway Diner has been mentioned a couple of times. I like that place for their cornbeef hash.
I like Al Smith's for their bread pudding. Their liver and onions is pretty good too.
And one more 'ol favorite is Peppercorn's in Perrysburg.

Eggs and Legs is on Monroe near Douglas. Not sure if that's the real name though. I think it got that nickname for the pretty girls in the early 90's. So that means your older than I thought.

Eggs and Legs was the NICKNAME for a place with (I guess) sexy waitresses, I remember eating there once with a friend & his wife one weekend, long time ago, think it was originally on the East Side-but I can't for the life of me remember the real name. It didn't impress me, and neither did the food. The babes were the comeon, but they were far too young for me, so I didn't really give a sh&^. Maybe IT was the one that moved/became the Star. Guess that's why Hooter's never impressed me, either-at my age, I'm thinking primarily of the cusine.
Aside note: Anyone besides me ever notice that maybe ONE of the girls at Hooters will have the large body parts their name suggests? All the rest have great legs & butts, but not much in the way of chests. Curious.

foolkiller re: hooters and upper body endowment. They can't overtly discriminate when they hire so the average or underendowed, if all else is reasonably decent, have a chance.
I suppose being distracted by body parts might make the food tase a little better.
