Potato Pancakes - I was greatly distressed today to find that one of my favorite dishes was not to be had. When my wife and I arrived at the Griddle Cake at Alexis and Monroe it had been transformed into a Polish restaurant.

I have not been able to find a restaurant to make potato pancakes as good as the Griddle Cake(after the demise of Betsy Ross). The German American makes great potato pancakes even though thet are too greasy and are only around once a year.

Uncle Johns have too much flour and aren't grated fine enough.

Tom's uses too much egg.

The Original flakes out the edges and ruins the texture.

IHOP is an abomination

I am willing to travel for Betsy Ross/Griddle Cake style potato pancakes. If any can recommend a place I would be extremely grateful.

We make potato pancakes at home. There are box mix potato pancakes available at the stores. Manishevitz is very good. Our 6-year old grand-daughter was over to the house- made her a couple pancakes and she said "Mmmmmm, this is gooood"!

I cant picture a restaurant at alex/monroe??

Doesnt it just come to a point right there with a little park? There's some junk food places down alexis a bit, and down monroe there's Dave White on one side and BK on the other.. Going the other way since Alexis ends, Monroe goes over Rt23 and then into Sylvania...

Where's what was Griddle Cakes?

The old Golden Gridle, and now Ski's, is in the strip mall next to the Pharm at Monroe and Alexis.

I think the Sylvania Dinner used to have a grilled mashed potato called the Sylvania Spud, but not sure if that item still exists.

You might have luck at some of the other mom and pop restaurants. I think the Sam's Restaurant on Dussell in Maumee has them, but not positive.

Reminds me of my childhood - we'd all get together at my grandma's house once or twice a year and make potato pancakes completely from scratch. My cousins and I were assigned to peeling and grating, and my grandma oversaw the adults mixing everything together. They were soooooo good - I haven't had potato pancakes in years. I'm not sure how I'd feel about trying a box mix though?????

(Then again, I don't care for instant mashed potatoes either...)

If you don't mind a little travel, I'd think that Frankenmuth would have something.

Go for pancakes in the morning and stay for chicken at lunch.

There is a place called the Bread Basket in Oak Park, Mi. It's at Greenfiled and Lincoln, this is the Best Deli ever. Worth the 1 hour drive.

Taximan - I'd never been to Griddle Cake, but I got to thinking after reading this post, Griddle Cake is now a Polish restaurant? Aren't potato pancakes a traditionally polish dish? Did you just get there and see Griddle Cakes was no more and just drive off, or did you go on into the new place (called 'Ski's')?

I was at the Pharm there in that shopping center and noticed the new place too. I'm one who enjoys trying new places, and it was lunchtime, so I went on in.

Guess what? The polish place has potato pancakes!!

It looks like you're particular about your potato pancakes, so you'll have to give them a try, but I had them and thought they were quite tasty.

I did try the potato pancakes there. I thought they were a little less than average. They had no appeal for me and would never order it again there.

Billy, I don't think you know what a good potato pancake is.

I ate them many times at Betsy Ross at the corner where Walgreen is now.

Again, enjoy your search.
