Fifth Third Bank warns customers of e-mail con - Fifth Third Bank (Northwestern Ohio) and its online customers are the latest victims of increasingly sophisticated "phishing" schemes that attempt to extract personal information from people who are unaware banks don't ask for it through e-mails. Fortunately people have been talking about this issue on the boards (this one included), but I am surprised at "Since early July..." and "round two after getting some bites"?! So the Blade AND 5/3 felt this was unworthy of news until now? It would be interesting to hear what 5/3 DID say to their customers prior to this story and what has been done to the culprits - seems to me the 2nd round could have been avoided, or at least less pervasive.

Very good questions. It can't have been news to 5/3.
So why the delay in addressing?

Fifth Third Bank is, IMO, one of the worst banks to deal with. They just recently joined the 21st Century with stamped deposit slips/receipts instead of handwritten ones. 20 years minimum behind all other banks.
I think that they have held this information close so as not to give their customers the feeling that it would be that easy for thieves to infiltrate their system. But of course we all know better....

I just got one of these bogus e-mails. (8-18-06) I deleted it, then I remembered this article. I'm so used to deleting crap in the mailbox that I do it fast. I don't even bank at Fifth Third. That's really pathetic. I get stuff like this from PayPal sometimes, and I question whether it is legitimate.

I should have said, (supposedly PayPal), I am not sure if it was. I delete them all. Some were legitimate. I only used PayPal one time to buy some doorknobs on e-bay. That's a long story. I finished these doors with varnish and sealer, and taped up the doorknobs. Some of the sealer mixed with the varnish and leaked onto the doorknobs. When I tried to get it off , the brass finish became permanently discolored. I couldn't find these doorknobs anywhere. I finally found them on e-bay, and that's how I signed up for PayPal. The next time I stain and seal any doors, I'll take the doorknobs off first! That would have saved a hell of a lot of wasted time.
