Loud Harleys!!! - I love motorcycles and enjoy bikers but at 5:30 AM my neighbor fires up his Harley and I can hear him drive away for blocks. I’m talking about some seriously loud and unnecessary noise. I’m not for restrictions but dang, aren’t they liable for the same noise restrictions as car stereos?

Municipal Light Rail System for Toledo? - At first glance I really liked the idea. I can see the energy-saving benefits, the reduced costs to me(Average Citizen), the creation of jobs and the business opportunities that would potentially feed off of the stations. I like the idea of hopping on the train to go to work every day instead of battling expressway traffic, (The fact that I'm driving less would lower my insurance costs, too. Wouldn't it?).
I've never lived in one of the bigger cities with rail transit. Can any of you enlighten me as to the pros and cons?

WTOL Weather Coverage - You have to be kidding me. I'm sitting here watching streaming video and I am just stunned. You have a tornado warning for the metro area, and they have the anchors doing most of the talking? I may be spoiled after being in some of the major weather markets, that gets the top talent...but you put these jokers in Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, or Dallas...and people would die from their total incompetence. - More>>

Thoughts on Body Piercings? - My soon-to-be 19-year-old son rolled in today with pierced nipples. After the requisite parental chewing out (most of which was dished out by my wife), I am trying to put this in perspective. Thoughts, anyone?

Drinking Liberally - I'd like to invite anyone with a left wing or progressive bent to come to the next Drinking Liberally meeting. We'll be getting together to discuss politics and culture (and to drink, if we like) on Wednesday, February 28th, at 7:30 p.m. The get together will be at Manhattan's, which is downtown on Adams street. Anyone else having Buckeye Cable problems today? - On Super Bowl Sunday, of all days! We're having a group of people over to watch the game, and our channels are doing weird things...will come in for a few minutes, then switch to the "this channel is not available" screen. This might be the final thing that moves my husband over to the DirecTV camp...he's been debating about it since finding out that the baseball package will only be available via DirecTV anyhow. If Buckeye doesn't come through for us for the Super Bowl, I don't anticipate us having their service much longer...

Apple iPhone unveiled at Consumer Electronics Show - "[G]lorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the sensor when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth with EDR, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quadband GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June." - More>>

Question to teachers - how much computer skills are taught pre jr. high school - When my kids were in school almost 20 years ago, they learned basic keyboarding, and played "The Oregon Trail" on the computer in school - that is all they learned, until they got to high school, and then, computer skill classes were electives, not required. I guess I assumed that all kids, from the first grade and on through elementary school, were taught basic computer skills. I also assumed, that they are taught more than they taught kids 20 years ago. But I have have a 13 year old nephew who seems to have no knowledge at all of using a computer - how is that possible?? (He's not allowed to use his mom's computer - she said 'he'll screw it up'. No reason for her to think that.) - More>>

Welcome to the real world of the common man, Mr. Finkbeiner - http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070106/NEWS03/70106037Those of us who have visited our loved ones in jail/prison, know that it is common place to be treated the way Mr. Finkbeiner was treated. Why does he think that just because he is the mayor, he gets to change the rules. Jails and prisons have very, very strict rules about visitation. If you don't arrive within the window of check in, you lose. You shouldn't be allowed to pop in whenever you want even if you're the mayor. Most of us drive many, many miles, Mr. Mayor. We all get turned away if we're late. The reason doesn't matter. Get over yourself.

Toledo Talk offline - While I was out of town and without Internet access for more than two days, someone picked a good time to gain access to some of our accounts and post comments that were not really posted by the actual user. I know of a handful of accounts that were broken into. I'm not exactly sure yet how access was gained. It was done either by exploiting a hole in my program or a hole on the web/database server or both. I have disabled functions, such as logins, sign-ups, commenting, new topics, customizations, etc., until I get things tightened down. I have blanked everyone's password in the database. This will take a couple of days to straighten out, since I won't be in a hurry to get the site back online over the long holiday weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience. - More>>

Toledo Standard -- Complain About Elitism and Get Fired! - Roberta deBoer writes: "Last Sunday I wrote about "Ed," a pseudonym I gave a young limo driver. [...] The company's board, he said, was "flying in to discuss bankruptcy, and here they are with cars waiting for hours on end, essentially so they won't have to wait. So they can get into their elevator and have a car waiting to take them a few hundred yards to dinner." Are you surprised that when the phone rang at Ed's Sylvania home the day those remarks were published, it was his boss?" - More>>
