News coverage of tonight's storm - The storm(s) that rolled through around dinnertime tonight produced some thunder, lightning and somewhat heavy rain. At 6:30, Channel 11 was still on the air with special coverage. I turned to Channel 13 and they weren't covering it, the national news was on. I don't know how long 11 was on with the coverage because I turned it off. Now come on - this was your typical storm that pops up during the summer in muggy weather. Now I suppose WTOL will be on the air with commercials tomorrow saying how they were the only channel to provide special coverage. I am getting so tired of it! Anybody else with me?

Loud Harleys!!! - I love motorcycles and enjoy bikers but at 5:30 AM my neighbor fires up his Harley and I can hear him drive away for blocks. Iím talking about some seriously loud and unnecessary noise. Iím not for restrictions but dang, arenít they liable for the same noise restrictions as car stereos?

Hey Carty, put on a tie! - OK, so I admit I am a little nitpicky about these things, but have you noticed in press conferences lately, Carty looks like he is about to head out to the golf course? I am all for being comfortable on the job, but the mayor should treat his job as though he was the CEO of Toledo. And a CEO of a major company doesn't take care of business in an argyle sweater. Carty, put on a necktie at least. I mean, the guys at the car wash I go to even wear ties....

Apple iPhone unveiled at Consumer Electronics Show - "[G]lorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the sensor when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth with EDR, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quadband GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June." - More>>

Anyone who's flown into Detroit this year could see the Chrysler Group had made far more pickups and SUVs - Sobering news. But I have to confess I haven't said a word, but everytime I pass through or by the airport - there have been more....and more.....and more cars stored out there.

Tacky flyer on my door - Police background check for firefighter job my neighbor applied for - I live in the Point-Shoreland area, and today stuck on my front door was a flyer from the Toledo Police Dept. Background Investigation Unit, with the name of the detective in charge, and her phone number. This flyer explained that my neighbor (two doors down) is being considered for employment with the City Of Toledo as a firefighter. It gave his name and address. Given that a lot of businesses do background checks, without going to the neighbors for potential dirt on the person in question - I was a little surprised at this flyer. I think it is terribly invasive to this guys privacy (the entire block knows now that he's applied for a job as firefighter - and will assume if he doesn't get the job, there's a reason from this background check. This family hasn't lived here very long - I don't know them personally yet, but they seem like nice people. What happens though, if one of these flyers is for a neighbor with enemies on the block? I think this is a very tacky way to do a background check. I am tempted to call Internal Affairs and tell them just how tacky I think this flyer is, but I'm afraid to hurt this guys chances for the job. Have any of you heard of this being done before????

Union dilemma - I have a relative who's place of work will be voting very soon as to whether or not to go union.
He's been with the company for a little over three years now, in that time, he has interviewed and moved up twice to new and better positions, and in doing so has increased his pay by over 20%.
The benefits he gets rival those that the TPS teachers get, ie a small $10 copay for Doctor visits, low co-pays for drugs, the retirement is your basic 401K...
He sees absolutely no reason to go union - the pro-union folks say the pay scale isnt in line with similar jobs elsewhere in the country, but other places in the country have higher costs of living than we do.
What he also sees are the ones who are so vehemently demanding to unionize are the slackers. The ones who call in sick all the time, the ones who are unwilling to go the extra mile and do the things that can move them up the ladder. Basically, the ones who wont do what my relative has done, and therefore have not gotten what he has.
Fyi, my relative has only a HS diploma and no other special training. He only has his past performance and his demonstrated work ethic going for him, and for him - its working.
He does see the need for unions IF there is a problem with management, but in his company,he sees no such problem, and worries that the company will suffer financially and end up cutting jobs because of the demands made by folks who arent willing to work and do the things they need to to get ahead.

Brian Wilson slams Toledo Talk and blogging.... - Last week I was tempted to write about Brian, when I heard him state that he had given up on getting a certain Democratic Candidate for Governor on the air and that candidate had been offered enough opportunities to talk to Brian that he was no longer going to offer and that the candidate could "get screwed". I was going to point out that type of attitude was probably why most Democrats wouldn't go on his show. Yet, that was the day of the Young Democrats of Lucas County Unity Town Hall and Paul Hackett's visit so in the scope of important things to write about I didn't bother. - More>>

Rail Road Crossings - If a business causes a nuisance that business should pay to make sure the communities surrounding it isnít affected. When I moved to Swanton, there were trains. But now there are more than 100 a day. The traffic is ridiculous and the noise is ridiculous. The railroad has to be making money since theyíve expanded so much. Why then should Swanton pay 30 to 40 thousand dollars per crossing to get those silencers? Why canít the engineers have a night horn to blow during sleeping hours? Why should the towns and villages pay for the upgrades to their crossings? Why does my tax dollars have to be used to pacify the railroad? How much are they paying? After all, itís their business, not mine.

OUR TRUSTING UNION - OUR UNION OF BROTHERS AND SISTERS IS BEING RUN BY PEOPLE WE PUT THERE. IF THE MONEY FOR JOB BANK DOES NOT ADD UP, WHY CAN'T WE ASK TO SEE THE BOOKS. ITS OUR MONEY. MONEY IN MONEY OUT. ONE OF US MIGHT HAVE A CALCULATOR. BUSINESS' MUST BE ACCOUNTABLE, SO SHOULD OUR UNION. IF THEY ARE NOT WORKING FOR OUR BEST INTEREST, LETS VOTE TO PUT SOMEONE IN THAT STILL BELIEVES IN OUR BIG FAMILY.
