kids opening firehydrants to cool off... who do i call about this? - is there a specific city agency in charge of coming to open hydrants and closing them? i know it's not an emergency, but with the hydrants blowing our water pressure is dead. any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I am looking for a little guidance with my preteen - My 11 year old daughter is a great kid, but lately whenever I discipline her about the simplest thing, she goes into a crying meltdown. When I say discipline, I mean talk to her about her actions, she is never spanked and at the most sent to her room for 15 min., but usually just verbally reprimanded. Is this normal behavior? As I said, she really is a great kid, but is this something I should seek professional help for?

The placebo cure-all TL;DR? - Tired of high prices for meds...
It's kind of odd that this alleged miracle cure all isn't examined a bit more in depth, especially when they report some of the same side-effects. Or at least declare a war on it so the powers that be can pat themselves on the back and claim victory. :) - More>>

Searching for parents of abandoned Findlay infant - I do hope that they are able to determine the identity of the child's mother. Even if the baby is placed in foster care and ultimately adopted, he deserves to at least know his medical history.

2 arrested on child endangerment charges - If any of the information in the story is true, the so-called parents should be put to death; or at least put away forever.

Take Kids to Work Day being retired... - Since there was such a debate about this not too long ago, thought I'd pass along this article. Today is the last Take Your Sons and Daughters to work day.

Girls Softball Sign-up Question - A flyer was sent home from school recently in regards to The City of Toledo Youth Softball League's. From my understanding anyone can sign up a team as long as you have at least 10 players. But when I asked the school to pass around a sign up sheet they refused. So how would anyone know if the students wanted to play. Have any of you dealt with this sityuation before?

Thoughts on Body Piercings? - My soon-to-be 19-year-old son rolled in today with pierced nipples. After the requisite parental chewing out (most of which was dished out by my wife), I am trying to put this in perspective. Thoughts, anyone?

Parental Responsibility? - I must admit that one of my initial reactions to hearing that a 15 year old shot a police officer at 2 am was "what was he doing on the street at that time of night and where were his parents?"

Searching for a location to shoot a potato cannon - for a science fair project. Any suggestions? Need a place where there isn't any chance somebody will be hit with a potato. Maybe 250 feet range?

Question for parents - The other day, I was discussing all of my children's activities with a friend and she made a comment to me that made me wonder - just how much is to much when it comes to extra curricular activities?

School Bus Routes - My sister-in-law told me yesterday that she found her child's school bus routing map posted on the front door of a certain Sylvania elementary school last week. She was pretty upset about it and has contacted school officials.

Proposal aims to force parents to police unruly children - I believe this story is likely to be true. I heard the new police chief Jack Smith talking about this a few weeks ago - just consider the source.

Sick Child Day Care - Does anyone out there know of a day care that you can take your kids to when they are sick (stomach bug, cold, flu, nothing serious)?

Toledo area activities this summer for families with children - I am originally from Toledo, but I moved away several years ago. Now with kids of my own (ages 3 and 5), I get to sometimes visit my family and friends in Toledo. Do anyone have and suggestions for fun family activities? Of course there are obvious ones like the Zoo, COSI and Cedar Point. It does not have to necessarily be a day-long type of activity. Are there any nice playgrounds/parks? I remember the churches used to hold summer festivals as well, so this might be an option. Our trip will be late July to early August.

Sewing Classes Anyone?? - Now that I FINALLY got my sewing machine (thanks fremontfreecycle!!!!), I thought I'd be able to "teach" myself on my own through books how to make a pair of summer Capri pants for my 9 year old daughter. Well guess what? I don't even know how to read a pattern (even the BASIC one - Simplicity)! All I've got down so far is how to wind the bobbin, thread my machine, and make straight stitches on some sample fabric (I've been told that I have a steady hand). I feel real DUMB in not being able to read a pattern, but I can no longer escape my fate: I NEED A CLASS. Any ideas on where to start researching in T-town will be graciously accepted and appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Tom Cruise to eat placenta after Katie Holmes gives birth - I've seen a lot of things on the Internet that have made me want to puke (the exploding whale, goatse.cx, and Stuff That Shall Not Be Named), but this is the first time I've READ something that made me choke back vomit.

Major Magic's = Major RipOff - Went to Major Magic's back in 2002 for a birthday party for one of my daughter's little friends. Over half of the 'games' and 'rides' were broken with duct tape sealing the coin slots.

Kids at the mall - As I was leaving the mall Friday night through the main entrance I walked out the door with 3 young girls whose ages I am guessing were 13-16. One of them said to the other two, "don't forget, I am Amber tonight". I thought it was a little strange but kept going. As I walked around the car they were getting into, I saw the driver was another race and probablly 5-10 years older than the girls.

Child support issues - The following is an e-mail I received, and I'm not sure if it's an Ohio issue or not. It doesn't feel like spam. Maybe someone informed on the subject can provide details.

Parental training for problem teens - "In the Toledo area, parents of strong-willed or out-of-control adolescent children can get special training to manage teen behavior problems on the home front. Called the Parent Project, the training program teaches concrete identification, prevention, and intervention strategies to deal with some of the most destructive adolescent behaviors, such as poor school attendance and performance, alcohol and other drug use, gangs, runaways, and violence. Since the program was introduced locally in 2001, 90 parents have attended the Parent Project classes. Some courts mandate that parents and teens take Parent Project classes. The cost is $100 for one parent and $20 for the second parent. The cost for a teen to attend separate classes is $100."

Area resident heads to Iraq to be human shield - (Mike doesn't like the term "human shield".) "Toledo's Mike Ferner will leave this weekend for Iraq. Ferner, who will be traveling with the group Voices In The Wilderness, says he will carry a message to the Iraqi people that "not everyone is as crazy as George Bush," and will encourage service personnel to "think through" any orders that may be given and to "resist those orders" if they believe they should. He will be there one-month and says he could well be in Bagdhad when the bombs fall, if that happens."
