Flash: Public Wi-Fi even more insecure than previously thought - There have been a few postings here(and elsewhere) about public WiFi. And I'm not just criticizing about government contracted WiFi services. Nor am I criticizing the local Panera's, Burger King, Mickey D's, Starbuck's etc. I AM warning those of you who use these services that you must take personal responsibility to secure your wireless data communications.

Trouble with AM Radio Reception - Not sure if this is an appropriate forum or not, but I have a problem that no local technicians can help me with.

Yelp! Consumer reviews of Restraunts, Shopping, Night Life, etc. - Found this site while just browsing through some random Tumblr blogs, and was shocked to see that not only does this San Fransisco-centric website also have a Toledo catagory, but that Toledo is the only Ohio city represented.

Washtenaw County wireless plan lacks funding - Ann Arbor News story via Arbor Update: "The program known as Wireless Washtenaw has been implemented in three areas: downtown Ann Arbor, downtown Saline and downtown Manchester. No additional installations have been made while 20/20 Communications, the company working with the county, applies for a $14 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and tries to line up other funding."

Microsoft is Data mining TT - Was curious if my blog or subpages showed up in any of the search engines, even though I have them setup to not be indexed. Luckily google and others have respected my wishes, while looking I noticed I did pop up in live.com.

Forget Wi-Fi Toledo...Just wait for google Wi-Fi - An article I found about Google's plan to pay billions for vacated 700mhz airwaves. Only, googs wants the FCC to follow their 4 criteria for openness. It also seems that Verizon and ATT are looking to pick up some of the vacated airwaves as well.

Advice needed - I've finally gotten with the times and sprung for an MP.3 device. My daughter is bugging me to fill it with music but I am a bit overwhelmed in finding the best source. My question to all of you is- Where is the best place to download music? Are there any safe, free websites for this? Where do you all go for yours?

Any place that refills laser toner? - I know places like Walgreens can refill many inkjet cartridges, but is there anywhere around here the can refill laser toner? I've got a few printers with hard-to-find/no remanufactured available toner cartridges and I'd like to get them refilled cheap. Yeah, I could do it myself, but I feel I'm still being ripped off just for a bottle of toner sold online... and since I fix printers all day I don't want to muck with more toner myself.

ICANN will discuss using non-English characters in web addresses - The development costs for doing this must be fairly large? Are we, the U.S. taxpayers going to foot the bill so that the Chinese and Russians, Arabs, and Israelis (And who knows how many other alphabets are out there!) can feel better about using the Internet? I mean, isn't English the language for air traffic control world-wide?

Best cell phone service in Toledo??? - I am looking for comments from all of you that have an opinion for the best wireless/cell service in Toledo. I currently have Sprint which is good but I just think you get better deals when you switch service providers and with # portability you don't have to worry about getting a new number everytime. So let me know your thoughts on phone service (reception, clarity, dropped calls etc.), customer service, phone selection etc...anything you care to share.

Wi the Delays? - Well, the deep dust of time settles once again over well-announced and soon-dropped plans. Maybe Toledo's esteemed (cough) government cuddled up with the wrong WiFi company (MetroFi, which is mentioned in the AP article following). Although the Associated Press disagrees in principle, Michigan's Oakland County is supposedly and busily rolling out coverage, which is destined to cover its 910 square miles. Toledo itself can't be any more than 1/10th that size, and that's largely urban too -- hence well stocked with infrastructure to support a build-out of wireless nodes. So, what's the delay? If Michigan's Oakland County already has pilot areas in operation as of this writing, then what is up with shuffling the planning documents in One Government Center?

Blogs... - I am thinking about starting a blog of my very own. It would be more of an online journal of events, or projects I am working on, post some photos - Not too much seriousness to it. But I am not entirely sure how it all works.. and if it is really worth the effort.

Tankless Water heaters? - We just has a water heater problem - thankfully it was only a replaceable element that went bad, so I got off easy, but it did make me think. I'll eventually have to replace my water heater -

Illegal Cable affects paying customers - FYI to anyone out there that thinks its harmless to illegally hook up your cable - it frags up the service for all the paying customers in your neighborhood.

Google's broadband initiative may threaten Wi-Toledo - I don't normally do this, but I wanted to highlight my detailed analysis of the new Google Broadband initiative TiSP and how it may threaten Wi-Toledo. Do you think the City will allow Google to have a TiSP node? You can also read how we may have a competitive advantage with the EPA mandated upgraded sewer systems. This could put Toledo on the forefront of better data flow.

Internet service provider recommendations? - We've had a cable modem through Buckeye for awhile now and have been happy with it. However, now that we have cancelled our cable TV service, the price went up on our monthly Internet service. (DirecTV has a monopoly on the MLB Extra Innings package and Mr. Mom2 can't live without it during the summer - otherwise we would have kept things as is)

Buckeye-Tel/Express problems - Has anyone else had problems with their Buckeye modems? I was without phone and internet for about 4 or 5 hours Saturday night.

Call to Second Life property owners - I know there was a post last year inquiring about people involved in Second Life around October of last year. I want to try something new, so I am looking for someone in Second Life that owns property and is willing to host a public event. Don't own any property? Maybe you have a friend that does. Please contact me or post your interest here. Also, even if you are not interested in hosting a public event, please send me the location of your property or let me know your name so we can get together in the future.

Reminder: You may need to update your computer for Daylight Savings Time!!! - Since Daylight Savings Time starts 3 weeks early now, you may need to update your computer to reflect these changes. I use Microsoft Outlook for my calendar and noticed that all of my appointments were an hour off, so you may want to check your systems. Microsoft has a wizard here to help you install the necessary patches.

Commodore returning - "Commodore Gaming has announced it will launch a new breed of gaming PCs that will see the return of the legendary Commodore brand. The new Commodore PCs optimised for gaming will be launched at the CeBIT show in Germany on March 15. Likely, they will simply be high-specced gaming rigs in the mold of Alienware and Voodoo PC, but the old Commodore name always adds a hint of intrigue."
