New version of Toledo Talk

That's a wrap on Toledo Talk v1.0 - Commenting will be allowed on existing topics here for another week. This app served its purpose for 4.5 years, but I think a little more functionality is needed now, and the new version of Toledo Talk will provide that. I've been using the new version for quite a while. Some aspects of the new version may be confusing for some because of the wiki capabilities, but in other ways, it may be simpler to use.

Toledo Talk offline - While I was out of town and without Internet access for more than two days, someone picked a good time to gain access to some of our accounts and post comments that were not really posted by the actual user. I know of a handful of accounts that were broken into. I'm not exactly sure yet how access was gained. It was done either by exploiting a hole in my program or a hole on the web/database server or both. I have disabled functions, such as logins, sign-ups, commenting, new topics, customizations, etc., until I get things tightened down. I have blanked everyone's password in the database. This will take a couple of days to straighten out, since I won't be in a hurry to get the site back online over the long holiday weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience.

ToledoTalk Grab-n-Gab - We could stand for another face-to-face to see who those scoundrels are behind those silly nicknames on the site. I mean, c'mon, "GuestZero"? What kind of goof picks a name like that? Satisfy any lingering curiosity you have, and enjoy the blessed produce of the divine bean. I'm proposing Saturday night, say 6-8pm, at a suitable cafe that isn't closet sized (hence, Downtown Latte is RIGHT OUT!). Let's pick a venue, pick a time, and let's grab a coffee and gab.

Toledo Talk confirmation e-mail problem - If you created an account, and you didn't receive the confirmation e-mail to activate your account, send an e-mail to email@example.com and I'll activate the account for you.

Outsourcing political commentary - A couple of changes have been made to the site. Due to a few recent questionable front page postings and my inability to monitor the site as much, all new front page postings will go into a moderation queue. So new topics will take a while to appear. This moderation step will last for a week or two. But on a more permanent basis, no more political topics will be allowed at Toledo Talk, specifically political topics about people. Discussing issues and levies will still be permitted, but the human-side of politics is out. Here are some sites to go to for political discussions:

Blow this for a lark - I'm taking leave of ToledoTalk for a while. I'm damn sick of the behavior of a certain poster (who shall remain nameless), and how that nameless poster gets away with unprovoked personal attacks against some of the most respected members of this board, how this poster deliberately misinterprets the arguments of others, admits no wrongness or wrongdoing, admits no problems with his behavior, and continually engages in childish behavior.

Lewiki - Something else to play with for those interested. Your Toledo Talk login should work. Look over the "about" and "help" pages. Post any display or site problems as a comment to the "website issues" article. Hardly any content exists because it has to be created.

Defining ToledoTalk - Given the rancor regarding some posts (no, not just posts with which I disagree), I offer up as a topic of conversation what, exactly, posters think the site should represent, if anything.

Catching up - I've been too busy lately to keep up with local news and issues, so some of these posts are a few days old. Anyone can post to the front page. I would rather be a reader than a writer.

Anonymous posting enabled - You no longer have to create an account and be logged into Toledo Talk to post topics to the front page and submit comments to existing topics. The default account for a person who is not logged into T2 is Guest. As a Guest user, a person can submit a comment and it will appear immediately on the website. When a Guest user submits a topic to the front page, it will not appear on the front page immediately. It goes into a pending queue first where the administrator decides what to do with it. If you don't want your front page posts moderated, create an account, login, and then submit your post.

ToledoTalk.com begins - Finally, I have ToledoTalk started. I reserved the domain in the fall of 2001. I got the idea for this site after my disdain for the media's arrogant and irresponsible attitude after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. I thought there had to be a better way to discuss the news and issues that affect us. The emphasis for this site is on issues and events in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, but when there are important national and international events, they can be discussed here also.
